That's why I'm so curious on how the hybrid does. If it's got more power than the current F150 hybrid and it's more like other Toyota hybrids that actually give significant boosts then that's what I'll be after. Just the TTV6 on it's own won't do much, for the few who can stay gentle on the throttle and keep it slow they can give huge boosts, but that's not most of us. Whenever the hybrid version comes out I'll be taking it for a long test run, if it's good and powerful and cruises at normal speeds with good mileage then I'll get into the numbers with them. If not I'll be keeping the '16 well past when it's paid off.

A salesman by the name of Chris Marko at Kendall Toyota in Anchorage, Alaska, just left a voicemail assuring me there would be no changes to the Tundra in 2022.

True info or shady strategy to get me to buy a 2021 now? Hmm.....

This is what it would look like with a long bed. Good luck parking that mall crawler.

Didn't the CEO say recently that EVs are a gimmick and hybrids and hydrogen are the way to go?

Not exactly. What I read was he said the hype around the tech was excessive and bans on gas vehicles are premature considering no money has been spent on the infrastructure that would be necessary to support an all-ev society.

I think the problem is current technology, Toyota won't touch a full EV unless it's paired with Solid State batteries or so I've read.

Fuel Cells are without a doubt the best case for range and convenience, but hydrogen is still too expensive for the average joe. The US average per KG of Hydro is somewhere around $14, even at the 66 mpg of the Mirai a regular Corolla is cheaper to run, then there's the Hybrid Crolla, no reason for a Mirai at the moment. That and current Hydrogen production is very dirty, almost negating the benefits of using it.

It’s no problem. Just lay the tailgate down and have a bed extender that utilizes the hitch, but it’s a lot easier with an 8’ bed where you just let the tailgate down and you’re golden

That looks like more of a 8' bed, not a 6.5' bed. Either way you get used to the bigger truck. I'm so used to HD trucks jumping into my Tundra it feels like a small go kart lol. Just means parking in more open spots, there's no need for me to park right at the door.

Ah you are exactly right, they area all over everywhere else in the world. When I was a kid, all the tradesman had the small Toyota and Datsun Pickups. Loaded to the hilt, they took a beating. "Rated" safety numbers are far lower than actual capacity. Watch what happens to those 1 Ton Izuzu or Hi Lux Trucks when they come to the USA....

My uncle drove Ford Crew cab 8' bed Dualies for years towing his 5th wheel horse Trailer. He could get 4-5 years out of a Ford with little in maintenance (He drove 75K a year going to Horse Shows around the country. He tried a Ram early on, it lasted 3 months, and was putting new axles, transmissions and suspension bits in his GM trucks annually. Not so with the Ford. Ford has had the HD market down for years IMO.

I honestly have no practical use for a 6.5' bed on a crewmax. But bassmaster elite Brandon Palaniuk's custom crewmax with the stretched bed has made me want that setup since he had it built.
Too bad it got totaled a few years ago

At the risk of sounding like a broken record.... I owned a 3.5 Ecoboost.
What magical fuel efficiency claims are people that want this similar engine in the Tundra hoping for?
My experience was while towing or around town it was worse than a V8. Only on the highway unloaded, doing the speed limit was it ever impressive.

I've been down this road before, it's magical thinking, it's numbers for CAFE, not real world. You're realistically going to maybe gain 2-3mpg best case scenario. My Ecoboost was reliable and I gladly went back to the V8.

To be honest though 90% of the time pick up trucks are driven on the highway so for most people it is a savings. If you were using it strictly for towing, yeah, they suck gas, but most of the time they are unloaded and driving highway speeds. Add in the hybrid that will help with the turbo's downfalls and you should have a winner. Turbos are worst when accelerating which is where the hybrid is best at.

You have to realize the majority of half ton owners use their truck as a grocery getter and kid hauler and nothing more. Zero towing and never anything in the bed. People that use their truck as a truck are a minority now. So the one place where the twins shine for fuel efficiency is exactly how the majority of the customers will be using it.

It's exactly what you said: the EcoBoost does really well in the EPA tests so CAFE is happy.

Both are very good points and are true. However the majority of 1/2 pickup truck owners drive them like it’s their WRX they just sold. Prior to purchasing the Tundra I looked heavily at the F150 and was intrigued because I am a very conservative driver. The mpg’s were not as good as I thought when used in the real world. It seems as though everyone in my area wants to chirp their tires to get a car ahead of someone else or to slam on their brakes at a red light. I don’t get it...

Moral of the story is that those 90% of those owners have no where near enough patience to achieve those mpg’s making the Tundra much closer, than everyone assumes, to the competition...

I think it's because this is what a majority of Tundra drivers are doing, and unfortunately - people that need a truck for true truck purposes buy from other companies. The threads complaining about Tundra's towing capability are numerous.

If all they were coming out with is a TTV6, I wouldn't be buying one, there's just not enough of a gain from the current truck to warrant spending that money. The current diesel offerings would be if it wasn't for the lottery that is the emission systems. So the question is will the hybrid get the gas engine into diesel efficiency while having a power jump from the current 5.7. And this is figuring it will be a standard hybrid, if it happens to be a PHEV that can do errands around town without turning the gas engine on that would be one hell of a winner.

Most people who truly need a true truck are buying from the other 3 because they buy HD trucks. If Toyota can tap into that market they will increase their sales figures significantly.
