Countless oil sample results have shown the 5.7 to chug along excellently on 10,000 mil oil changes. No reason not to do it.

Well it's what the Dealer uses for my "free for two years" maintenance. Apparently Toyota bought into it as well. The Dealer has already said that oil changes are 5,000/6 months.

I do 5k for warranty compliance on my Flex Fuel but after that I wouldn’t hesitate to go 10k. Typically did 7500-8k on my ‘08 and never had issues. Oil analysis indicated 10k shouldn’t be a problem.

This is the real answer for this user. I suggest doing the same and analyze your oil. Your driving style, conditions and oil will all impact how long you can go.

For my 2021 Rav4 the dealer will only change the oil every 10,000 miles for the 'free 2 year maintenance'. It's slightly misleading. It's 2 years or 25,000 miles, whichever is first. So-2 free oil changes and 5 tire rotations. Not that significant when you break it down.

since ours is a FFV (and the manual states 5k for ffv, 10k for non ffv), did the 5k oil changes under toyota care @ 5,10,15,20,24xxx. will do again at 30k and then move to 10k since we never put any flex fuel in the vehicle.

at 3.5 yrs old only have 28k on the truck.

I do 6 myself, every 6 months (seem to always average 12k a year) But as far as I know manual still says 10. If I was getting for free I would do it either way.
FFV was mentioned as 5k, do you have that maybe?

On our 2015 Toyota Highlander, I started changing the oil every 5,000 miles and paying for the changes or doing them myself if Toyota didn't cover them. When I got over 50,000 miles I started leaning towards the 10,000 mile interval. I consider myself a oil connoisseur. :) I have to say, on the V6 in the Toyota Highlander it didn't use any oil and that oil would almost look and smell new at 10,000 miles. That gave me some confidence. On our 2018 Subaru Impreza, I was annoyed that their service interval was 6 months or 6,000 miles. When I changed the oil on that car at 5,000 miles that oil looked and smell beat. Very dark, strong smell of fuel. I would not go to 6,000 miles on that car. The duty cycles of the two cars are not that different but that Subaru engine seemed to really challenge the oil a lot more. They have some work to do on their combustion. I haven't seen the oil on my Tundra yet to compare but if it's anything like their Toyota Highlander you should be fine. Of course, I'm conservative, so I will likely lean towards every 5,000 miles since I want this truck to last a long time.

There is someone on here that changed his at 5 or 6k. He showed pics of his filter and the metal particles in it and wished he had done it sooner. Any new engine is going to have some debris in it. I'd do it sooner for that first oil change, regardless of what dealers say.

Yup. And I can use it on my wife's Sienna and my son's Accord since I can change out the bottom part of it (or add an adapter) and have a sturdy funnel to pour 5 qt jugs into without worrying about the thing flopping around.

Send it for an oil analysis and see what they say. I did mine every 8k miles and analysis came back good. Said to try 10k so now I am. One dude had 25k on amsoil and very good oil analysis results.

At 5,000, there were metal particles in the filter membrane from break in. At 15,000, I found maybe two tiny metal particles in all of the filter.

Unless money (~$65 in oil/filter) and time (~30 minutes) is that precious.. every 5k. I've been doing mine every 5k since buying the truck; I'm at 110k now. I've never let the dealer do any of my maintenance.

Your Tundra has now cost you, 11 X $65 = $715, and 5.5 hours of your life, more than it needed to if you had simply followed Toyota's own recommendations.

Don't you trust Toyota's engineers to steer you right? Or, do you think they are conspiring to sell you another truck sooner? :notsure:

$715 and 5.5 hours are negligible when you know you're taking care of your truck a little better. And that's over what.. 5 years? If someone values that much money and time over 5 years, they have bigger issues at hand.

If you think you know how to care of your truck better than the guys that designed it, then you have bigger issues.

Do what you want with your money. If you can't use $715 and 5.5 hours for better purposes, then change your oil.

They make funnels that screw right into the oil hole, only a couple bucks and available in fast colors.

All good, dude. You do you. Luckily I make more than enough cash that $715 over 5 years is literally less than pennies. And luckily for my truck I care to give it a little more TLC than what a Toyota engineer says it needs.

Furthermore, Toyota recommends those intervals based on regular use of a stock vehicle ..not a vehicle with 40" tires, a supercharger, and aftermarket suspension. If you think dudes with 1,000-plus pounds of weight in mods aren't stressing their engine at the very least a little more than stock to warrant a more frequent oil change then that's good for you. Even more it clearly states somewhere in the good book -- or just common sense -- that if you're using your truck harder than most typical uses, you should probably care for it better.

I just cut the bottom off an empty oil bottle and I use that as a funnel.

+1 for amsoil and 10k interval. (With exclusions to towing, extra stress and running ethanol blends) Speaking of shavings, I started last year inspecting filter media on all of the oil filters I could get my hands on. Multiple cars trucks and SUV's, different oils and viscosities and have always found visible shavings in the filter media under a bright light. You look online and people are screaming that tiny particles means your motor is failing and to stop driving it immediately. From my own investigating I'm drawing a conclusion that it is fairly normal, hasn't proved itself otherwise.

100%. The Toyota oil change interval manual even states that frequency of oil changes varies with driving conditions. I work 3 city miles from home and put on 5000 miles a year. I also have 35" tires that weight 25lbs more a corner. So harsher conditions and that it would take me nearly 2 years to get to 10000 miles is the reason I change it every 7,500 miles.
