I think the turd gen Taco looks cool, but I don’t like the sluggish drivetrain or seating position. Still, I think it’s a far cry from a dumpster fire. I see them EVERYwhere. People seem to still be buying lots of them.

I agree, while there are no-doubt some things less than desirable about the new Tacoma, the numbers don't lie. People love these things. Toyotas competitors would kill to have these midsize sales.

The Tacoma a dumpster fire? how? Toyota delivered on better MPG and features... sure it's a high rev engine but it's no dog.

I had a 2016 taco before, it was a dumpster fire for sure. Toyota screwed it up big time. Just because it sells doesn't mean they didn't screw up the first year. Damage is done already and I'm never going back to it. What a horrible experience. If you were trying to turn left at an intersection and the transmission (automatic) stalls with a car coming full speed at you, then you'd call it a dumpster fire too. Almost crapped my pants. I really hope Toyota doesn't screw the new Tundra up.

It’s definitely gotten better since ‘16. I purchased one in 11/2015 so had one of the very first builds and the original ECU programming was hot garbage.

My 2017 tacoma MT that I still have, has had 2 ECU updates so far in the 4 years I’ve had it.. one just came out in the last year.

I’ll be coming back to Toyota if the technology and MPG are caught up with the rest of the competition.

Looking at either the new tundra, hybrid F150 or AT4 with diesel.

I'm at 282k on my 2016. It's way past being worth anything to trade it in. At this point I'm just waiting for a catastrophic failure. Thought about jumping ship but changed my mind. This truck has been too good to me to let her go, maybe around 400k I'll think about it again. The 2022 would interest me if the towing numbers are around 14k.

Regardless of what the other manufacturers are willing to put on paper, no half ton can actually tow that much.

That is some serious miles for a 2016!
14k towing is around the limit for a gas 3/4 ton.

I think you can apply this to any mass producer of anything. Be it a Ford F150, Toyota Tacoma, Microsoft windows or McDonald’s, just because you make and sell a lot of them; it doesn’t mean they’re good quality.

Sorry to change topics but I found the IHS information last night that the new tundra production model has a start date of 11/2021. So I am wondering if they will actually hit the lots this year. Not sure how many tundras they can roll off the line per day

They sell just over 100,000 per year, which means that they must be rolling out just over 300 per day, assuming a 6-day work week, so they can probably get about 10,000 to 15,000 out by the end of the year. My guess is that those would be accounted for since there will be enough pre-orders. Realistically to be able to find one on the lot, or enough of them on the lot to have a reasonable choice in trim levels, colors, etc. would be towards the end of the first quarter 2022.
At least that is some good news, assuming that it is accurate information.

In regards to the Tacoma, I don’t buy it was a dumpster fire. I have two family members that had/has a 2016, a 2017, and a 2020. And a few friends that have them who love it. They all have been flawless and the lifted 2016 had over 100k when traded in.

SURE, there has been problems but I feel that is because Toyota kinda listened to their consumers. When I was at Tacomaworld.com the two biggest complaints about the 2nd gen was mpg’s and lack of comfort features. The two biggest complaints were addressed and now many people complain about the 3rd gen being gutless. We can’t have it both ways. It’s either a truck that gets good highway mileage (for its class) for commuting or a truck that is better for towing/payload.

Unfortunately the Tundra is heading in the same direction... I feel Toyota is going to respond to the masses. EVERY review and internet complaint about the Tundra ALWAYS cite the same complaints mpg’s and lack of features. Toyota is going to address those...here come the big BUT, BUT those mpg’s and features are going to come at a great cost and lessening of its truck abilities. And honestly I really don’t understand what buyers think when they are purchasing a 5.7 liter engine. There is no real effective way to get a 5700 pound truck moving efficiently with a N/A motor or even a 4200 pound truck with a 4.0 liter (2nd gen Taco)... Hence why I am so damn glad I bought my 2020.

Wanna see a dumpster fire wait till the next gen Tundra comes out..

Conversely, just because we don’t like a popular product doesn’t mean it’s a dumpster fire. That term literally means “an utterly calamitous or mismanaged situation or occurrence.”

The Tacoma has been and continues to be a quality truck. The first year of the new gen needing a transmission reflash (which was obtained from dealers for free) doesn’t mean it’s a dumpster fire.

To be honest it wasn't just the first year that needed it. My 2018 has had 1 or 2 reflashes. The newer models have different logic that us older trucks can't get. At least you couldnt last time i checked. However, the transmission shift logic has been the least of my pain with my SR5. The slam in the back when coming to a stop annoys me more ha It feels like someone rear ended you. My local dealer said it was their #1 Toyota complaint and Toyota was well aware, but not willing to fix. I have heard OVTune can fix that one though, but its hit and miss. I have the rear diff howl and it was bad, real bad. There is a 400+ thread on Tacomaworld about it. Radio at 30-35 and you could still hear it in mine. Many trips to the dealer, many calls to corporate, and many emails back and forth. The engineer came out and drove mine around. He admitted it was the same howl as the TRD's have. Corporate still wouldn't pay for the TSB even with that data. In the end they said I could initiate a buy back... I just wanted the dang TSB parts! ha So eventually I went and paid for the TSB parts myself. Added sound deadener to the entire rear of the cab as well. Now the howl is much much better. I know its just sound and my rear diff wont explode (knock on wood), but man is it annoying.

I learned on a 1st gen manual at age 8 and kept that rig until I got my 2018 Tacoma. I have never not owned a Tacoma. The 3rd gen hasnt been a dumpster fire for me, but it definitely could have been better. All the above was quite annoying in the beginning, but I still like the rest of my truck. Fortunately, I do needed a bigger rig (hence why I am here), but I am also a little burned from all the little quirks my truck has had. The new Tundra is a good excuse to move on!

Sorry for the rant FYI Back to the Tundra!!

I hope they give an option for a factory lift and 33s without having to go to a higher trim package like the TRD Pro.

Lol except for the part where most dealers either didnt know about the ECU update or would refuse to do it because they ‘could not reproduce the problem’

Yes, initially there was resistance...just like every other issue that Toyota resolves through its dealer network. But everyone who wanted one ended up getting it, and I think at this point you’d have a hard time finding a dealer who isn’t aware of the issue and willing to flash the ECU.

    Again, not a dumpster fire.

Tacoma is great for people with short legs and long torsos. Feels like you’re sitting on the freaking floor. The engine is ameezing. Goes 0-60 in 2.5 days. You can fit a whole washer or dryer in the bed.

And that almost by itself is why I'm not running right out to buy a TTV6 Tundra. I don't feel like they've made any big mistakes with the Tundra....but yeah, I know more than a few people who have bought newer Tacomas and were less than impressed with its shifting/power.

I'm a current Tacoma owner... It's terrible. Low end torque is non-existent, the tranny constantly does a 4-5-6 dance between gears, it'll drop to 4th gear with the slightest incline or headwind. It runs at 3,000 RPM way too often on the highway and it ends up killing the mpg. I had the dealer perform the ECU flash and I noticed no difference.

    I got 19mpg stock. Getting 17mpg with 265/75R16s.

I've been following this thread for updates. My next truck will either be a 2022 Tundra or I'll be shopping for a 2018-2021 if it looks butchered.

Did you own one of the early 3rd gen Tacoma's? I get it, brand loyalty. Until it happens to you personally, just keep brushing issues off until it directly affects you right? IMO, it was a BIG TIME dumpster fire that wasn't addressed until 2-3 years into the new gen.

If that 3rd gen pulls 17mpg then that's no better then what I get with my 2nd gen. Of course other variables go into that but looks like they didn't gain much mpg going to that 3.5

I made the mistake with my 2016 Tacoma of waiting and thinking "There's no way Toyota will screw this up"....and I was left with what is arguably the worst automatic transmission/engine combination ever manufactured. I got rid of that disaster in 2018 for my current Tundra and couldn't be happier. The loss of MPG's is absolutely worth it. I've got no faith at all in Toyota getting the next Gen Tundra right.
