My dad’s house he just sold had a metal roof. They weren’t actually in the attic, but were sleeping under the ridge cap in the little gap between it and the low spots on the roof (there was mesh up there that kept them out). Bat shit everywhere in the attic.

He pulled the ridge cap and installed a vent material that looks like a scotchbrite pad then out the cap back down. Now they don’t have a spot to get into, but the attic still “breathes”

When we bought this house, there was a piece of something that looked like pantyhose coming out corner of the roof. After we signed, the previous owner said to leave that because it was to keep the bats out. Apparently, they had a really bad bat infestation. We hired a yokel to replace the nails in the metal roof with screws and the dumbshit pulled it out. I'm pretty sure that's where they are coming in and out but I won't be positive until I climb onto the roof and take a look. The area they are in is on the 2nd story roof and it overlaps the back of the house which is a one story with a big vaulted ceiling. I should be able to straddle the roof cap and be able to see what is happening. If that's where they are at, I'll do the screen for a week and if I don't see them coming in and out anymore, I'll pull it down and fill it in with hardware cloth.

The metal roof sits on top of an old wooden roof. Our attic is mostly finished and I don't think they've penetrated it (I don't smell bat shit or see anything) but I'm sure it's just a matter of time. Maybe the rats are keeping them out.

I cleaned out the drain in our master bathroom for the third or fourth time since we moved in 2 years ago and had another stern talk with my wife about brushing her hair over the sink.

Thought I had to do something about the leaking faucet in the basement bathroom but it appears to have stopped leaking. I think the gasket must dry out from disuse so I'll have to put something more robust in there eventually.

Need to test my smoke detectors after the kid is done her nap.

You better hold off a bit. Everything has been running a little later than expected. They said they are about 1.5 weeks out and it should be roughly a 10 day job for them, but we'll see...

I like them too - neighbors aren't so good about making sure there's not standing water in their yards and we get mosquitos bad. I'm all about them living here, just not in my roof. They live for 10 years and they can have colonies of up to 10,000 friends and family. But I'm dealing with the rats first, bats are secondary.

I was talking to my neighbor about getting some a few days back and he ordered one for himself and one for us which was cool of him. I may get a few more - we'll see how they work out. Right now I only have 4 bats in the one area so I'm thinking the area they are in isn't that spacious.

Just make sure you get a really tall ladder and hang it up as high as you possibly can.

I've been eyeing a few of the trees - we have squirrels but I've read they'll leave each other alone. I may end up playing it safe and buying a pole.

My dad hung one on a tree at our lake lot but he only had a fairly short ladder so I don't think the bats used it because it's too low. I don't imagine bats and squirrels will bother each other but I don't know for sure.

I've seen people hang them on their houses so that's an option also, I guess. Might even make more sense to hang it near where they are nesting. I'll have to see what the house looks like that my neighbor gives me. There's a place called "Bat BnB" that makes nice ones but they are pricey as hell.

Does closing on our new home count!?!?!? We closed on our house! It’s a new build so no major stuff needs rectification, just minor convenience and aesthetic improvements and fun projects! I don’t have any good pics during the day but can update later. We lucked out on a spec build with most all the upgrades in it already. Landscaping was a hold back and should be completed in the next week or two. Yes...wifey is prego, due in June!

Next up is timer switches for the bathroom fans, and after internet install Tuesday, install all my smart dimmer switches from the old house, and get the Alexa’s fired back up and working to control everything. Appliances hopefully will be delivered this week (fridge, washer, dryer) and then more fun getting things unpacked and setup. Many more posts to follow!

    I prevented a huge basement flood. :D

Background: So a few days ago, when our water softener was regenerating, my son was downstairs feeding the cat, and said "Uh....Dad? There's water coming out of the floor drain in the laundry room."

He wasn't wrong. I called the plumber....but after a bit more testing, I realized that when I poured water down another part of the drain (between the floor drain and the main sewer drain), the water came back up the laundry room floor drain. I reasoned this meant the stoppage was between the drain I was at, and the sewer drain.

So I fished out the drain snake and fed it down until I felt a blockage. Once I punched through it I knew - all those lovely sewer gases back-fed a bit. :puke:

Took a 10' section of water hose, ran it from the hot water faucet to the drain, and ran it full tilt for a good 5 minutes or so...and no issues at all.

The next 3 days, we easily got 6 inches of rain....and no stoppage or flooding. I shudder to think what might've happened had I not caught that blockage.

Hey all, need some advice on siding. I have old hardboard siding on my house now, looking to get it replaced with vinyl. Easier to maintain, plus the woodpeckers around here are terrible on my current siding. Anyways, got some quotes. One quote was to take off the hardboard and put in insulation under the vinyl. The other is to just put up some tyvek and put the vinyl over the hardboard, with the hardboard acting as the insulator. I’m leaning toward going with just going over the existing hardboard because the labor to remove all the hardboard siding adds up on the overall price. Do you guys see any long term issue with vinyl over hardboard? Appreciate any help!
