Not that different from our terrier when my wife moves. He can be fast asleep on a chair and if she goes to another room of the house, you can bet he's going to go with her, even if she tells him to stay.

Same with my corgi. Huge difference from the couch potato danes, they couldn't care less if I got up and walked out of the room.

Funny how dogs are that way. My dad has a cocker spaniel that is the same way. She also will be able to visually see him but will still put her nose to the ground and see where he came from and where he's going. It kinda funny. He'll walk around the garage and to the other side of the house and call her over. She's 25 feet away and can see him and she'll follow his sent around the long way and back to him.

Have to say, that might be the best one I taught my older Shepherd (as a baby). For her first 6-8 months, she'd do ANYTHING for one bit of dry kibble. Taught her not to get it until "okay" when we tossed it on the floor. Part of the training is that sometimes you say "okay" and other times, you go pick it up and they don't get to have it. Keeps them from assuming.

Eventually we got her to the point where we'd get her to lie down "sphinx style" and we could line up 6 or 8 treats on EACH of her forearms, and she'd just look from one leg to the other and back up at us. Very impressive to watch, for those who had never seen it. Again, sometimes you give the release, and other times you just take them back up while she watches and waits.

At one point of her growth, I realized she was getting big enough that she could "counter surf" in the kitchen if she wanted to. All I did was walk her around the cabinets one time, pointing at the counter and saying "leave it" every few feet. It's never been a problem since. We can leave the kitchen trash can out with the best/worst-smelling stuff in it, and she won't bother it at all.

Such a smart beauty, love my GSDs (and all of yours out there)!

10lb/wk sounds plausible in the big growth spurt. My older one was eating about 8 cups/day of dry food at her peak. Now it's 3-4 and she's pushing 10 yrs. She leveled out around 80lbs healthy weight.

Absolutely -- Going from having a cocker spaniel to a GSD, I knew that she HAD to have a gentle mouth, especially with my own two young kids, but also for anyone else she might encounter. Reportedly, a GSD has the third-strongest bite of all breeds (I think Rotties and pit bulls rank higher). We got Heidi at 7 wks, 3 days old. Here's a little video we shot during early training that very first week.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G-eofmHZ6bY

And here she is some months later working on the "back" command. Living in an urban neighborhood, I was also determined not to have a dog that did the "door dash" as soon as the front door opened. I started by telling her to get back before I'd open the door, but then I abstracted the command to move backward anywhere. Eventually, I could have her off leash outside, sitting and facing me, and I could back her up about 30 feet. She'd still sit and lie down at that distance like you can see in this video. You can tell when she's tired of following commands and just wants the ball. She starts grumbling at me!

Heidi went through a phase (much longer than I'd have liked) where she decided to be way too mouthy. I did use this technique a lot, and maybe it helped, maybe she just grew out of it.

Hiking partner. She's almost 2 now! Shelter rescue pitbull. The shelter thought she was deaf but happy to say she can hear just fine! Also no other ailments common to an all white dog (not albino)

What a good girl! I'm impressed how well she sat at 7 weeks old. Then again I'm so used to having great danes and they're not the smartest breed, lol.

We taught Indie "gentle" by putting a treat in a closed fist and only letting him have it after he stopped licking/biting at my hand and looked me in the eyes. It took about a week of doing this before he figured it out.. and the only downside was having a slobbery hand afterward . "Look at me" was another great command to teach the dogs, it helped a lot with "leave it" by making them direct their attention to me instead of the thing they wanted.

Someone should make a dog training thread so everyone can chime in with how they teach each command. Might be useful for anyone getting a puppy.

I put bug killer and fertilizer on the yard today.
Had the dogs outside while I picked up poop before putting them in kennel...

Found that Maverick, the pointer, had buried Moxie in the sand in the sandbox.
She didn't seem to mind at all and he was very proud of himself....

After having to put our Great Dane “Penelope” down last year due to a severe health issue, I wasn’t sure if I’d ever be able to put myself through this again. She was MY dog and left a giant, dopey hole in my heart. However, my wife encouraged us to move on and as of last month we have two new additions. Here’s Maisey (left) and Echo (right). They’re shelter rescues and have been incredible additions to our family.
