Hey all. I'm trying to decide between the 2-8" subs I currently have and getting a ported box.... or... get a 3rd 8" sub and get a sealed box.

In your opinion.. which would sound better.. ported + 2 or sealed + 3?

 

I haven't been into sound lately, but I remember years ago when I bought my subs/box for a car I picked a sealed box. I can't remember the differences but back then I must have liked the sealed box better.

 

I prefer the sound of a sealed box better, it's a tighter bass (and all guys like tighter ).

In all seriousness, it comes down to what you want. Typically, ported boxes are louder, but sealed boxes are cleaner sounding. I have 2 10" in a sealed box.

 

I'm leaning towards sticking with my 2 subs and going ported. It would be easier that route. Figured since I have to buy the box anyway I might entertain the idea of getting a 3rd sub and going sealed based off of cuft requirements.

 

IMO, Sealed for cars and ported for in the house. Or sealed for music and ported for movies. What type of music you listen to will factor in as well though. Boomy bass= ported. Guitar rifts= sealed.

 

I dable in all styles of music, so that's not much help. I guess I've always liked boomy subs and then let my speakers fill in the cleanliness.

 

I like my sealed but i am running two 12's so that might make a difference. these guys have some good videos on youtube and its where i got my box. Maybe they will help you with your choice.

Started this thread while back... i have 2 10" Rockford Fosgates R2 in sealed box with Massive Audio Nano N2 amp stock speakers fixing to upgrade em soon stock head unit

 

I've been looking at them. I need to buy a new box and can't decide between 2 subs ported at 600 watts or get a 3rd sub and go sealed at 900 watts. I already have 2 subs w/ amp and they just fill the requirement of the ported box, but If I went sealed I could get a 3rd sub and bump up the juice. See the dilemma? Boom vs Power.. Decisions, decisions.

My previous setup was 2 10's in a ported box with 1k watt amp and that was rather ridiculous when they would hit. It would take your breath away. My recent setup was 2 8's in a sealed box with the same 1k watt amp wired down for 600 watts. If I got a 3rd sub I could use the full potential of the amp and get back to 900 watts.

I'll check Youtube to see if anyone is running 2 8's or 3 8's and whether they are ported or sealed.

 

Yeah I hear you. When I was trying to figure out what I wanted we were looking at 4 8's or 3 10's. I have a friend that builds all the corporate vehicles(radio station demo vehicles and high end vehicles)and I finally just let him pick.... within reason he can get carried away lol. Mine came down to space and budget. Both limited me to a 5 channel amp so we used the JL Audio 900.5. That limited us back to 2 10's or 12's once I found this box. I choose the 12's. If I had enough money to run the 600.4 for mids and highs and then the 1000.1 for subs we would have been back to 3 10's.

My thirst for power may take a back seat to what I already have in my possession. Why spend another 150 on a 3rd sub, when I can put that towards install or a nice set of speakers. I'm leaning towards 2 8" ported.

 

I made a decision. I'm going with dual 8" ported box. It'll be from NetAudioWF and be the 1.5cuft version. It is going to take up all of my under seat storage, but I don't keep much in the truck anyway. I'll do a mini build post once everything is finalized and I go for installation.

Awesome. My only complaint and it's minor is that the height of my box was just enough that the front support would cause the seats to not latch with floor mats installed. Took out the floor mats and problem solved.

 

What location would you use for the amp? Under pass front seat or behind rear seat? I'm leaning towards pass front seat for ease of access if anything ever needs to be changed. Thoughts, comments, concerns?

 

I did sub amp under driver seat and 4-channel under passenger seat. A bit of a tight fit, but happy with the placement. If you just have the one amp, it is a farther run for your thick power wire.

 

Front pass seat has JL Fix86, and both crossovers. Drivers seat has the amp. I did originally want it on the back wall but the rear seat was the only thing that didn't come out for dyno mat. I am glad it did stay up front for adjustment reasons.

 

I didn't think about the possible addition down the road) of an amp for the door/dash speakers. I'll have to see how much movement the driver seat has (don't want to cut air flow) and determine which will work better and keep the other open for future upgrades..

 

The type of sub you put in and the type of box will have a direct impact on the results.. I have a 12" shallow mount rf on a close box and a 10" qp regular sub in a ported box,both boxes provide almost the same cubic footage..same hu, same amp,with the qp bass is much deeper clear and requires less volume to provide equal results.. Is all about how much air it moves and how it unloads..if the sub unloads to a side of the car then the car becomes part of the sub making it sound louder and same applies to the port
Furthermore in a ported box air is moved as the sub goes up and as it goes down.. In a closed box you only get the up effect.

Thanks for the info and photos. I'll post some pictures when I get the box. I've got an Orion 1k amp wired for 2ohm so that should be 5-600 watts. The subs are 8" Kicker comprt and they are 300 watts rms each. They should sound great in the ported box. All the specs match.

Depending on how much bass is produced from the subs will determine if I get an amp for the speakers or just speakers. I'll have to figure out what specs work best.. component, 2 ways, 3 ways.. yada yada yada That's a whole different road that will get crossed at a later date.

 

Right now I'm just running mids and highs through the door speakers and all bass comes from the sub, mids and highs are lacking.. I'm considering replacing the door speakers with mid ranges and mount tweeters in the dash grills since there's nothing there now.

 

I'm considering a nice component speaker (not trying to break the bank) up front and then a 2 or 3 way in the rear.. My thing is the center speaker in the dash.. No idea what to do with that. It is 3.5 I think and the outer dash speakers are 2.5. If my info is correct the front doors are 6x9's and the rears are 6.5's. I'll have to do some searching to see what people do with the factory speakers. I'm really not sure if I will need to amp them or not, so it is best to have all my options layed out.

I am trying to not get carried away with this. It is easy for me to go down that rabbit whole and break my bank account in half. ha

 

there's plenty of room under the passenger seat where the factory amp was. I have both my amp and LC7i installed there

 

I know the sr none entune have nothing under the dash grills, for what I seen here those who replaced the head unit ignored the center speaker, and those who replaced the door speakers and kept the factory hu amp the door speakers and kept the rest as they were..

 

If you replace the speakers, disconnect the factory center channel (even if keeping the factory HU)...it downs nothing but muddy up the sound.

 

Yeah getting carried away isn't hard. I am running 6.5's in the doors now. The front dash is housing the tweaters and we didn't touch the center channel. If your going to switch the door speakers then I would use a component set in the front door and IF you decide to change the rears just another set of 6.5's. If you are going to spend the money spend it on the front. You can barely if at all hear the rear ones.
I may be posting a "group buy" for audio/video stuff. I am trying to work out the details since there are a lot of variables. Maybe I'll try to figure that out today.
