What he said....what you are describing is how a MC with an internal "leak" feels like...

 

sometimes they can be external leaks too.. external into the booster.

 

But in that case, won't you notice a dropping level in the brake reservoir that you don't see with internally "leaking" MCs?

 

it c an be VERY slow. my tundra had its master replaced before i bought it because of a stupid slow leak that we ended up finding going into the booster.. took a year for the owner to realize it was even leaking

 

That's what I'm thinking also but when depressing on the brake, it doesn't lose pressure after a few seconds. It has constant pressure. That leads me to believe the master cylinder is still good. I could be wrong. If it does turn out to be bad, would swapping for the T100 master cylinder and booster work better? Would the VSC plug still work (maybe with a little mod to make it work?).

 

I have the exact same problem as you. If I pump the brakes I get great stopping power and consistent firm pedal. It wasn't like this before the big brake upgrade. I never had a super firm pedal but I didn't have to pump them like this. @assassin10000 did some math a few months ago that showed that my MC might not be able to keep up with the larger diameter caliper pistons. I wonder if he is correct. It's almost like the MC can't push enough fluid the first time but when I press a 2nd time it's fine.

I have no idea what the real issue is but for around $35 I bought a kit from Toyota that will allow me to rebuild the master. I'm going to try that first. If it doesn't solve the double pump issue I'll either just live with it, or my OCD will get the best of me and I'll go to 13WL calipers. I'm not messing with the T100 swap. The instructions on that are not clear and no one here has done it for me to ask. Also, it looks like the parts are getting harder to find. I would need a very expensive, and specific T100 MC made for ABS.

Once I rebuild the MC I'll at least know it's not in jeopardy of completely failing while I'm driving. That's my only concern right now aside from how annoying it is.

 

With your year model you are screwed. $1600+ for a new Master Cylinder. Otherwise, you’ll end up with other problems trying to reinvent a solution.

For anyone that's been following along, replacing my master cylinder didn't help fix the mushy pedal/long travel. I can still pump the pedal once to build great pressure and then get awesome stopping power which some thought was a sign of a failing master.

After having budget brakes bleed the system I had the manager drive it and he says it feels like the master isn't capable of pushing the bigger caliper pistons. Exactly what was speculated here before. The first pump moves the pistons a little ways, the 2nd pump gets them where they need to be.

What I don't understand is how others have done this swap and said their pedal feels fine. Perhaps I'm just way more picky on what is acceptable...? I have read the double cabs have a larger master cylinder bore and several of the guys I talked to had DC's. I'm tempted to pick up a MC from a T100 but it seems like a pain and I'm not sure which one to buy. I'm not upset I spent money to replace my 19 year old MC. Peace of mind at this point.

TLDR- the 14WA calipers might be too much for the 13/16 master cylinder. Or I'm just an anal bastard.

 

Does anyone know if the spare wheel will fit post upgrade. Also, would oem steel 17 inch rims fit? I know 16 inch rims won't fit anymore. I'm worried steel rims won't fit after the upgrade.

 

Upgrading the calipers doesn't impact anything near the spare tire. Is that what you're asking?

I had another member PM me asking about this and my gut says that most 17" wheels will work but I cannot say for certain. You may want to call Geoff at this shop and ask him. His contact info is somewhere in this thread.

That's actually a good question that I never considered. I have no idea if my 17" spare would clear the bigger calipers. I guess if it didn't, I'd have to move one of my rear tires up front and put the spare in the back.

On another note, I've been studying pictures of T100 Master Cylinders and they are not the same as ours. They have 4 mounting bolts, not 2. I guess the only way to upgrade to a T100 MC is to also do the booster. I'm still amazed the T100 had a better booster and MC.

At some point I'm gonna have to do something about the brakes.

 

Before replacing the the MC, especially if you when you double pump and it will hold pressure. Make sure you bleed the LOAD SENSING PROPORTIONING AND BY–PASS VALVE in the rear after you bleed the rear brakes.

I spoke to Geoff the other day. He's a nice guy. Explained my situation and he gave me the name of a guy that's his T100 brake expert-Chad Mitchell. I haven't tracked down a number yet. I'm still not sure if I want to mess with that. I'm still baffled by the people that have done this swap and not experienced this. He said he's done this to over 30 trucks that haven't had to mess with the master cylinder. Part of me wonders if there could still be air trapped somewhere.

For posterity purposes, do you mind listing your general plan of attack with specific part numbers of caliper, hoses, LSVP deletes, cylinders, and boosters. Also, could you let us know how much everything costs? I’m assuming this is DIY. Pics help obviously. Thank you.

 

Not a dyi, having my long time mechanic do the install.I have already put the wheelers extended brake lines in during suspension change.
All oem brake parts,14wb calipers , rotors,pads, and new oem master cylinder to be installed. I will post up pics if i can remember lol and prices when install is complete.

 

Man I owe you! I've been thinking about this situation and trying to figure out what could be the issue and I remember what you and @Darkness said about the ABS. I popped my ABS fuses back in(they have been out for almost 2 years) and found a small stretch of gravel near my house and went out there and locked the brakes up about 10 times so that ABS would activate. People were looking at me.

I must have had air in there after all! I've been test driving it both with and without the ABS fuses in place and it's so much better. The pedal still travels a little further than I would like but I don't have to do the double pump b.s like I did before. I looked like a mad man out there just randomly locking up my brakes. The brakes bite hard.

It could just be placebo, but it does feel slightly better with the ABS fuses in. If you recall, I had pulled them because something is causing false ABS activation at low speeds. Now I sort of want to fix the tone ring so I can use ABS again. I've clogged up this thread enough so I may ask you for some help on that separately.

Edit to add- this was only a short term fix. SpongeBob pedal remains as of December 2021.

 

About how much for your total parts and also separately the labor if that is ok to ask?

Report on upgrade, complete success. Brakes are way way better happy to report. Very little change to pedal feel, if anything I would describe as feeling of being slightly longer but no mushy feeling whats so ever. All oem parts used,calipers,rotors, pads and new mc, wheelers brake lines. Sorry no pics. Break down on cost, parts rounded up 906 .Labor 550 In my thoughts worth every penny! Next upgrade DD 12 hole injectors?
