Oil Drain Plug Question...

So I did an oil change in October and its time to do one again. Im gonna order a Fumoto for the next change, but I had a question that came up when I was doing the first change. When I went to put the drain plug back in, I had a helluva time to get it to start threading. It just didnt want to go. I dont know if it was the angle I was at or if it was something else. It was almost like, it was too big for the hole. I cleaned the threads and inspected the bolt and it looked fine. The drain pan threads looked good as well so there was no cross threading from previous oil changes. It finally started to thread after messing with it for 10 mins or so and all was good. It torqued down properly and hasnt leaked at all.

Im apprehensive to do the next oil change because of this. At one point, I thought I was going to be towing it to the dealer. Does this seem normal? Thanks in advance y'all!

 

Hello, Im about to do my first oil change also, the same with you, i was planning on putting the Fumoto and changing the oil filter canister to the aluminum one.
Im sure someone will chime in and curious what they have to say.

 

This is really odd-ball ~ an issue I've never had in all my years of vehicle maintenance.
I took over a truck from my dad ~ he must have had the same issue you were having. His eyesight wasn't the best.
He had wrapped the drain plug with nylon twine ~ I discovered this on my first oil change with the vehicle.
Sure enough, he had cross threaded the plug. Lucky for me it was the plug that was damaged and not the threads in the oil pan.
A trip to the dealership for a new plug saved the day.

I did the aluminum housing at the same time and I thought it was all good until I saw the thread about the Jowett Performance billet oil filter housing...Damn its nice.

Dont forget the Motiv filter adapter. Makes things much easier. I also got the filter drain kit from Motiv. The Toyota aluminum housing has the drain adapter built into the bottom of it to use the drain filter hose. Will make the next oil change easier.

 

I didnt notice any crossthreading on either the plug or pan. I dont know what the deal was but Im tempted to just have Toyota do the next change and see if they have any issues.

Also what do you mean by the filter adapter, doesn’t the kit come with it.

I cheaped out and didnt get the funnel...I wish I had when refilling the engine lol

You can buy the funnel separately. The funnel is awesome - such a simple solution to keep from spilling oil on the refill.

 

I believe it's normal for old guys who don't see well anymore...How old are you?

If the plug threaded in without resistance or "prevailing torque" and torqued up fine, you're OK. This old guy has had to relearn the practice of turning it backwards until you hear the lead of the plug thread drop into the lead of the pan thread. It'll make a clicking noise every time you turn counter-clockwise past it. When you hear the click, turn clockwise to try threading it in. If you have any resistance at all, try turning to the left again.

 

I didn't care for the design of the Fumoto valve. I went with Femco instead and NO MESS with the hose that screws on.

 

Its funny you mention that. About 10 years ago I had a Nissan Frontier and had a version of the from FRAM and it worked great. Nice low profile option..Im may have to look into those.

Nice! Yes, the above is the correct size for a Tundra with 5.7 engine.

I bought a pump and it takes out 99% of the oil.

Never had an issue with plugs after that.

 

I needed to watch something mind-numbing yesterday, so I watched a documentary on the first version of the Ford flat-head V8 (circa 1932). The narrator was talking about the design features, and pointed out that the drain hole in the oil pan was like 1 3/4" in diameter. He opined that it was large to allow thorough draining of accumulated sludge due to the poor quality of the motor oil of that period.

What's the internal passage diameter of the Fumoto valve?...1/4"? Motor oil has come a long way. Drain it hot.

 

Not sure about I.D. of any of the valves. A 1/4" I.D. is prob a good guesstimate. Motor oil has come a long way. Also, on occasion I will put a cap full of Seafoam into the old oil, run the vehicle for a few minutes (the car will smoke, but the Seafoam will break down any sludge/ buildup), and then drain the oil.

 

Don’t forget older oil was 10w 30w or 10w 40w , today we use 0w 20w it will drain much faster,like water. Hot or cold.

 

Your point does raise a question that has been nagging me, though.

If the former accepted practice was to drain motor oil when hot, presumably because the old single vis oil would be thinner when hot, and all the crud would be sliding off the engine parts with the hot oil, what is the new thought on when to drain the new super thin multi-vis motor oils?

(1) Hot, as like our dads used to do it, or (2) cold, when the multi-vis oil molecules have shrank back down to their minimum 0W length? Maybe, (3) Start draining hot, and drain until the engine is cold?. Or (4) It only matters if you've got a urethra size hole to drain through?

My inquiring mind is seeking truth here.

 

I’m not and auto Tech, but I have stayed in a Hoilday Inn.ha ha. My father was a airplane tech. For almost 50 yrs.and we changed many a vehicle oil.I used to ask way too many Questions one of witch was why change oil when the engine was so hot? I got many different answers, the one that stuck was, the engine should be warm enough to allow the oil to flow at a rate that would pick up small debris within the motor, but not hot enough to burn you. I don’t know for sure, but I would guess there are many correct answers.
I just keep doing what I have learned for my 50 plus yrs. seems to have worked for me, never had one motor fail on me.

 

I had the same thing happen when I tried to install my Fumoto almost 2 years ago & I've still never had the balls to try any harder to get it to thread. Both valve and oil pan look fine, it just wont start. I'm still using the og drain plug. Ticks me off bc I've got the Jowett filter housing with a fumoto and it's dead easy.

 

Cheap hack: take empty washer fluid bottle and cut the upper cone portion off. Clean/dry, invert and screw into the fill port. Works like a champ for no mess oil fill.

 

So thinking about this a little more. Are you sure you had your tongue at the right angle? LOL
Thinking the fine threads were just not lined up as needed. I haven't had any issues as you described. Plug was easy, do have the Fomunto valve now.

 

LOL. Yeah, it was probably user error, as usual. It was the first oil change on this vehicle. I ended up ordering the ValvoMax and I have a case of Amsoil on the way so we’ll see how it comes together next weekend.

 

I'm in for the ValvoMax review.
Was looking at the Stahlbus valve too.

 

I chose the ValvoMax because it’s made in America by US veterans. I also like the fact that it has much better clearance and is a bit more rugged than the Fumoto.
