2022 Tundra

I think this is why we’re going to see factory air ride. It’s the only way to have a good riding truck for the family people and the capacity for the truck people.

 

All more crap to add complication and failure points.

Not stuff a real truck needs.

The latest bling and tech gadgets are only lures to "sell you" on. Is that really why you buy a truck?

All distractions, and a means to separate extra money from your wallet.

 

That’ll all be in the new Tundra also .
It’s not why I buy a truck but there’s lots of people that want all that .

 

Basically if I can grab a 2021, I assume it will be my last half ton until I am forced to move to a 250 with a gasser.

 

The problem for Toyota is they want to keep up with the F150, Ram and GM 1500's. Those vehicles are becoming cars with lift kits essentially, as many have said. The problem for Toyota is that the other guys have the HD trucks for those who want old school trucks - V8 and can haul or tow a lot (compared to cars). Toyota is at a crossroads - do they want a truck that can truly tow or haul big numbers, or do they want a car (MPG's and comfort) that can tow or haul occasionally? This is the issue with Toyota's old strategy of one size fits all, you can do that with a pickup to ride good with MPG's and tow/haul, they require completely different drivetrains/suspension. So unless Toyota decides to get into the HD market this is likely the end of the line for the basic V8 with a stiffer ride.

I'm a proud owner of two V8 vehicles, and before I bought my Tundra had Jeep Grand Cherokees and a commander all with the V8. also had a BMW M3 for years, and when they came out with one with a V8 motor I almost traded my inline 6 for it because the V8 is my favorite motor.

I love my Tundra TRD pro but I am not at all a Toyota fanboy. I find Toyota's even though they are ultra reliable, in general feel cheap. I'm traveling for work right now and have a RAV 4 rental. Though they seem to have done a good job with interior quality and layout, the little things like switchgear power window switches and such just feel like garbage compared to most other cars, especially if you're used to European brands.

I'm completely satisfied with the fuel economy of my tundra. on the highway if I keep it below 75 I can average 18-19 miles per gallon whether I'm loaded or empty. My Bullitt Mustang gets 28-29 when cruising on the highway in 70-75 mph speeds.

Of course they will both suck gas like a fat kid does a milkshake if you get into the go pedal, but the capability that a V8 displacement brings really cannot be matched, especially when it comes to full size pickup trucks.

Yeah yeah, I know I've seen the on paper ratings of the Ford twin turbo 6, but I've also driven one and have a couple buddies with them and they readily admit that they regret getting the V6 rather than the Coyote V8.

But as others have said 1/2 ton pickups are more and more becoming luxury family and lifestyle vehicles rather than true pickup trucks, and why the 3/4 ton or HD market has exploded.

For Toyota's sake and market share, I hope they are smart and keep a V8 in the Tundra line with whatever else they add but I also have to say that if the new truck only has a v6, it will help me to resist the temptation of upgrading to a newer model

 

I agree that Toyota’s strategy is “old” but it’s still extremely relevant and not outdated in today’s world. The essence of Toyota reliability comes from that strategy. I don’t want Toyota to become the big 3 or even worry about competing with them in certain categories.

Look at Ford vs Toyota future bets. Ford’s all in on EV trucks, SUVs, and CUVs. No cars. Toyota came out with will an all wheel drive Camry that gets slightly better mpg’s than the RAV4. EV technology can’t be implemented over night...gradually, yes.

So basically Toyota will survive the greatest decision in human history by the greatest President in any civilized government known to man to absolutely decimate the US oil independency. When we are paying 5 bucks a gallon for Russian gas Toyota is going to crush the competition simply because of keeping that “one size fits all” mentality. Always being aggressive and short sighted rarely survives...

I would buy Canadian gas...Russian was used as an example. But honestly I would prefer US gas. I don’t want to buy gas from countries that don’t like us which I don’t believe Canada does (not like the US)...

 

I can’t understand for the life of me why we don’t build a refinery close to the tar sands and refine our own oil . Doesn’t make sense to me .

 

Just giving the “on the other hand” . If we end up as ev’s being the future then which manufacturer would be considered short sighted ? If gas goes up a huge amount then the Camry getting that great mileage would be like driving a full size truck today when you pay for the gas .

 

We have 4 of them plus I'm not even sure how many upgraders (at least 5 that I know of) within about 450 kms of the OIL sands. How many more do you need?

 

At least enough that we don’t need a pipeline or depend on other countries oil .

You are comparing the 14 year old platform to the big 3 that gets updated every 3 years or so.. I'm not a toyota fanboy I'm just listing the knowledge that I know. Toyota is the biggest auto maker in the world, you don't have to worry they know what their doing. They are a conservative company and they don't half fast their cars or trucks. Wait untill the next gen comes out this year because you never know what's up their sleeve... Toyota will never go into the HD market, it doesn't make sense at all.

 

EV is absolutely the future no question. But we are at point where EVs really aren’t advanced enough and ICE are at their maximum potential. Hybrid vehicles are a great transition...until EVs can advance enough for all vehicle markets. With EV you obviously don’t pay for gas but would you be willing to charge you EV pickup every 100 miles while towing a travel trailer. I don’t think this is going to be the case in 10 to 15 years from now but now I believe it is...

I completely agree with you . I would love the ICE to be around forever but I guess I’m in the minority .

 

Should come standard with a v8 and have an hybrid version as a $6-8,000 option. Then everyone will be happy.

 

Only 25 city / 30 highway mpg? Unless it gets 45 city / 50 highway with a 3.5367241 sec 0-60 mph time while pulling 15,000 lbs count me out.

 

I really don't believe the tech will be there in 10-15 years either honestly. Lithium ion tech is about as far as it's go. It's going to take new battery tech to meaningfully extend range.
Sure the small suv's and cars will be fine but trucks won't. You'll have to stop halfway to the lake to charge your truck then hope the boat ramp has a charger.
The biggest problem of the dream of all ev in the US is the power grid. The majority of electric systems are under sized and not maintained well. Unless the government is going to start throwing trillions to utilities for grid upgrades we'd see major issues. Plus generating the extra power to charge everyone's cars is going to be a big problem.

I agree with you, hybrid should be the real next step.

Pretty much this and it’s the elephant in the room people don’t talk about. The grid cannot handle the extra demand a mass amount of electric cars will create.

 

The current state of our electric grid is my #1 concern regarding the push to EV's. CA, NY, and TX can't keep the lights on now when weather gets extreme, everything will crash on a normal day once 100 million cars of energy demand are introduced to the system.

I read somewhere about a new solid battery that lasts longer than lithium , charges to full in about 5-7 minutes and gets better range . Just wish I could remember where I read about it . Old age I guess .

 

Solid state batteries are the future, and they’re not too far out.
