I was just checking out Google maps; it looks like there's only one independent gas station around here and it's in a very inconvenient location. At least when I go to stations run by the big refiners around here, I know what I'm getting in terms of quality and that the gas hasn't been sitting in the tanks for weeks.

I read and hear everything you are saying, but you do realize the ‘electric charge’ has to come from somewhere which is most likely coal.

The battery comes from the mining. The solar only works in daytime. Windmills work only on windy days. Pray snow and ice don’t affect both.

When you say ‘change or die’ what do you mean? Why will we die? Who says we are dying?

Trying to replace one source with another is not going to work for many reasons. But, balancing out the energy based on where each source works the best could benefit all.

The sun, too. Don’t forget the sun.
We have around 17% of solar and wind electricity in Texas. 100% of it went out from a winter storm. I was out of electricity for 5 days. No thanks.

When you decide to go off the national grid you had better be able to handle "situations" like that, otherwise you have zero recourse once that umbilical cord is cut.

Agreed. We make more electricity than any other state but we also use more than any other state. We need to fire the nuclear plants back up full steam.

So, 17% of renewable wouldn't power the entire state? :)
Why were the coal and natural gas offline for the duration? Would nuclear have had the same issues?

I bought one. It's perfect for my part-time job commute in town. I can drive 24miles/day M-F on a single charge, 10 miles of that trip is at 65. For road trips, it's so much cheaper when I visit family 200 miles away (one-way). I can find charging stations with ease. It does take a while to charge, but if my choice is a $12 charge or a $40+ tank of fuel, I'm ok with waiting.

I suppose those Model Ts had the same issues when they first came out? Who would have had the gas to refill so they could keep driving? Were there many choices, or just a handful? Where they in smaller towns or just larger metro areas? When adoption expanded, I bet the options to refuel did as well.

I'm not getting rid of the Tundra. I enjoy taking the travel trailer on trips. I think vehicles are tools and you choose the ones that work best for your needs.

As I understand it, folks are trying to blame renewable energy for the Texas grid going down when the reality is more complicated. Every form of energy went down. Natural Gas lines froze. There are also some really cold states that use windmills so the claim that they can't work in the cold is not true.

Texas failed to prepare and it cost them. This sort of thing will almose certainly happen again.

Natural Gas wells were freezing up causing supply issues to combined cycles and coal units (coal starts up on NG), with other freezing issues in conjunction within the power plants not suited for that cold of weather.

Feb 13th the power plant I work at tripped all three units off at -14*F, and we are set up for this sort of weather (more operator error if you ask me). I was called in on the evening of Feb 14th to ensure we keep at least two units online. Temps dropped to -20.4*F that evening and I had 3 operators outside in this all night. We ended up losing one combustion turbine, but recovered it in 1.5 hours and had full power of 510 MW of generation.

That weekend was the perfect storm. Severely colder temps than foretasted, obviously the snow and cloudy weather in the daytime effected solar generation, no wind which was a saving grace for us due to -20*F temps. This crippled wind generation (in our joint dispatch has 4500+ MW) and only had 200 MW available and even that wasn't reliable due to icing the blades.

Not all windmills are the same. Windmills situated in known cold climates have deicing capabilities. Adds a lot of $ to production costs. Texas windmills didn't have that capability and thus failed. Vestas is one of our largest wind machine clients. We get to see the manufacturing methods up close. The blade build out process is quite amazing actually.

can you even think of trying to put in charging stations in all homes, I can just think of all the possible fires, people that live in towns are not going to be able to charge their cars when alot of them park along the street. charging stations are going to charge more to charge than if you charge at home, and the states are talking on putting more fees and taxes on electric cars cause they will lose all the tax money they get from gas. by the way this is not just happening in California they are pushing for every state

Texas didn't fail, ERCOT failed Texans. Haven't seen anyone place all the blame on wind/solar but they DID contribute. What screwed us the most, no doubt, is how ERCOT was ill-prepared for this & also chose they did not want to pay the $1,500/KWh emissions penalties. All the top dogs there have either been fired or resigned before they could be fired since this debacle. They screwed the pooch & lied about it but the truth is slowly coming out w/the help of some of their insiders ratting them/themselves out.
The point is still there that when you look @ the process of creating "renewable energy", putting it into play, maintenance, inconveniences & disposing of it after it's ran thru it's livable life, it's not "green" & it costs exponentially more than coal, oil, gas & nuclear. It's all just a huge money grab (ie. taxes) & if you don't see that then there's not a damn thing I can say to change your mind.
"Climate change" can be altered & controlled if you just pay more taxes! Yeah, right. This planet is doing exactly what it's been doing since it's inception. It's always been getting warmer & will continue to even if ever human died tomorrow. That's what it does.
In the 1920's they said the planet was going to burn up by 1950. Then there was that whole acid rain deal that was going to kill all the plants & animals in the 80's. Then we went back to the global warming & by 2000 all the icecaps would be gone. The planet isn't warming ANYWHERE near of what they said so they changed it to "climate change". It's all a bunch of bullshit that we get to pay billions of dollars a year for to research it & control it. Bullshit.

Not to mention everyone will have to own a generator to charge their car when they lose power & where does that get us? Right back to those nasty fossil fuels! Damn the irony.

Did they remember to kill the coal fired generators that produce electricity to change the electric cars & trucks, and everyone’s refrigerators. Wind and Solar can’t keep up with demand. Just my 2cents...:anonymous:
