Then they better build an exhaust system so it doesn’t sound like the current raptor.

I have to agree with you on this. . I love the V8. . . Most people on this board hate the thought of a turbo V6. However, most of the people I know locally that drive Chevys, Rams, Ford's will admit they love the tundra AND will readily admit that they feel it's a more dependable truck. The biggest complaint I hear, around here, is the fuel mileage. Now, I'm not saying I think it's a huge deal but apparently it is to a LOT of people. . . Regardless if how much sense it makes. Personally, ill take my 16 mpg tundra over a 20 mpg shitbox. . But not everyone sees it that way. If they don't offer a V8, I'm sure they'll lose customers. . .but I honestly feel like they'll gain more than they lose because "this truck will save so much money getting 21 mpgs ". Aaannndddd, some of those customers they lose, will be back when they realize how bad they hate their P.O.S. Ram that's always at the dealer or their V8 Chevy that still gets shit mileage and still at the dealer. . .long winded but thats my opinion. . .oh. . And I'll gladly buy the tundra V6!!

Never say never, but I’m prepared to be kicked in the nuts disappointed with the 6 cylinder revolution coming our way.

Dont really give a shit it makes more power.

C8 Corvette is better than my c6 z06 on paper in pretty much every conceivable way, but I will never buy that automatic, paddle shifting, mid-engined, traction controlled, abomination of gamer boy nonsense.

Ill take the motor up front, a 3rd pedal to shift and hazin’ tires at 90mph all day erry day.

Never thought Id feel this old in my 30’s:help:

Boomer, really? isn't that comment just for people with a limited vocabulary.

I love my Tundra and think it is a great truck, but fan boys think Toyota has never f'ed up before. They have their share of dogs. Maybe you're not old enough to remember the Paseo or the Previa. Or how about all the problems that plagued the 2nd gen Tundra when they released it in "07 not to mention the current Taco?

For every limited vocab, millenial fan boy that bought a truck because "it's a Toyota" , I can show you 10 guys who bought a Tundra because it is a reliable, bad-ass V8 with a 4.30 rear axle that will tow and haul for 100s of thousands of miles efficiently with few problems.

To Toyota's credit, they probably know they f'ed up a little. My guess is they are retooling as we speak, that's why we won't see this thing until it is time to sell them. This truck will still be released as a TT V6 +/- Hybrid to take advantage of all "gotta have it now" fanboys, just like Ford did with the 2nd gen raptor. Once they've suckered all the tools, they'll come up with a V8 again or they'll lose sales to whomever still does offer a V8, or to 3/4 tons.

Offering only a V6 full size pick-up would be a death knell for the Toyota in that market. Toyota knows this and didn't invest in the San Antonio plant to just give up.

I'm not averse to mid-engine but automatic transmission is a deal breaker on a performance car for me.

You bring up some great points here but unfortunately there are changes in the 1/2 ton market that are driving these decisions.

First off, Toyota has had plenty of lemons but thankfully no where near most other manufacturers.

Back to the 1/2 market...I am sure you can remember when most SUVs had a two speed transfer case and was able to tow a small boats or travel trailer. A vast majority of the SUVs on the market now are cars with lift kits. And when you put a trailer on these vehicle they literally are riding on the edges of the rear tires. The manufacturers did this to “suit” the market. There is more profit in a Chevy Trailblazer than the Chevy Caprice. So they made the Trailblazer ride more like the Caprice while changing the drivetrain to get better mpg’s.

...The same exact same thing is happening to the 1/2 market. They don’t care about the guys that really “tow” or really “use” their trucks. Profit is key and I would assume the “family” market is largest buying class outside of fleet.

Admittedly I will not use my Tundra to full potential. I put my ATV in the bed and tow about 5k four times a year. Even at 4K your almost forced to buy a 1/2 ton over an SUV bigger depending on towing distance simply because of the sisification of SUVs. A Tundra was the best decision...in my case.

The other problem is THAT NO MATTER what Toyota comes out with, people are going to complain...

They came out with a 5.7 and all critics/owners say is Mpg’s suck...F150 ain’t that much better.

Payload and towing ability sucks...pull 12k with a F150 doing 60 mph and have a car pull out in front of you (let me know how that works out-towing #s are marketing hype common sense is a better #)

It doesn’t have heated this or that...the Rams come with a 62’ plasma LED OLED screen...

The platform is older than our grandpas...hell I’d would take my grandfather any day of the week (he was a WWII vet who fought at Normandy) while some NOT ALL of the future grandpas of today will be able to say they got participation trophies for losing.

In all honesty (and I hate it as much as you @szabo101) but the market is moving away from V8s. The 1/2 market is becoming cars with lift kits that come with a 5’5 or 6’5 bed.

That's bad news on all make and models I would think. Guessing you are saying stopping power / break size is not sized right in the F-150 and the 1/2 ton market.

I suspect his point is that the advertised 13k towing capacity of the domestic halftons is pretty much a lie.

Correct...bad news for any make of any 1/2 ton. Strictly from a safety sense. That’s a lot of weight...

Pretty much...the truck would handled the weight without self destructing but I call BS on that being safe by anyone’s standards on a road or highway.

You guys kill me complainng that the half tons are just cars with beds now. While the modern half ton is way more family friendly than they used to be (thank god) they are also way more capable as well. The towing and payload is twice what it was 20 years ago. Hell their current capacities are equal to the one tons of 20 years ago. Yeah they don't tow 12000 lbs, if you need to do that, they make a 3/4 ton to do that. Each class of truck fulfills a niche. Not everyone needs a HD truck, if you do then buy one. Don't buy a 1/2 and then complain it won't do the job of HD.

I think you misunderstood what I was trying to say. I love the capability (payload and towing max) of the 3rd gen Tundra it’s a great truck and 1/2 tons in general. They are pretty damn good. My FIL has a 2010 Ford F-150 (4.6 Ext cab) in which he tows a 22ft boat with. It’s incredibly comfortable and handles the weight with minimum squat. I have another family member who has a brand new F150 (5.0 crew cab) and with a 4K trailer (load weight included) it dropped almost 4 inches. I was stunned... That particular whatever model is more geared towards comfort than handling Fords towing claims. With my ATV, gas, and gear in the bed my Tundra doesn’t squat 4 inches.

I am starting to see a FUTURE shift with some manufacturers... But from the what it seems Ford is already there...

**EDIT** I do believe that these capacities are a little exaggerated (yes, their numbers are great for a 1/2 ton). I believe the Toyota’s is one of the most realistic. But in the end I would love to testing based off 45 mph with max towing weight. I think many people would be shocked at how poorly at the 1/2 tons would perform. I driven commercial trucks for many years and many people have no clue of the dangers of weight. And how it affects vehicles...

It will only get worse if the manufacturers listen to the guys complaining about "bed bounce".

I think all manufacturers give you the option of what you want . If you want a higher payload you get the lower end model without all the “features”
Or you can go up to luxury with a bed . That just gives you the ability to go out anywhere and buy whatever you want and be able to take it home with you right then as opposed to having to schedule a delivery without giving up any of the creature comforts you want .
    There’s something for everyone .

Very true...in regards to the Tundra though, them simply don’t have enough of the market share to offer those choices. As great as the Tundra is it will most likely not ever compete with the sales volume of the big 3. The Tundra isn’t for everyone hence the beauty of capitalism. But everyone isn’t for the Tundra.

I agree 100%. I don't dispute any of this as Light truck and SUV sales are approaching 3/4 of US new vehicle sales. The problem for Toyota and more specifically the Tundra is that they sell 110-120k per year, not 500k plus. If I were looking for a gasoline 6-cylinder, Ford and RAM offer so much more it doesn't make sense for Toyota, they'll never compete in the family hauler pick-up market.

Yes the trend is going this way (toward the Family sedan pickup), but there will always be a market for those who want "Trucks". If Toyota stops filling that market with their 5.7, watch GMC and Ram pick-off a number of Toyota buyers like me.

On the V-6/V-8 conversation, it all depends how Toyota plans to 'dominate'.

They will not dominate the full size 1/2 ton segment with only a V6. I think they will have a TT V6, a hybrid system, and likely a V8.

The 'one size fits all' powertrain option of the current model is a big ding. IMO, I get roughly the same mileage as my buddies with the Ford V6 and smaller displacement GM motors in normal use, regardless of the EPA ratings.

Honestly, it’s my first time every saying it - I was several adult beverages deep, but I stand by my statement. So to answer your question, me.
Anyone that takes their local sampling, and believes it is an accurate representation of what a comprehensive sampling would show - is someone that is deserving of the title of “boomer”. Then the fact that you double down by hurling insults about my vocabulary, which has no relevance here, only solidifies you as a stereotypical “boomer” that has a very limited viewpoint, and is easily offended.

I apologize if my statement hurt your feelings, as I stated in my reply to the other quote - I was many adult beverages deep, and it was my first time using the phrase - but it seemed very fitting. I’m not a millennial, But actually an “xennial”, I’d gladly explain the difference if you’d like me to, I may be a Toyota fanboy though. My first car was a 1985 Toyota Corolla SR5 Hatchback, which I bought from my mom and drove until it had 365,000 miles on it. The only reason I got rid of it was because I wanted a newer vehicle with more “creature comforts”, and I regret that decision to this day.

If liking a brand because it is consistently reliable makes me a fanboy, then I’ll gladly accept the moniker. This is the same reason I have no issues with being called an Apple fanboy.

All of that said, just because you know a bunch of guys that won’t buy a Tundra unless it has a “badass V8”, doesn’t mean there aren’t significantly more people that would buy a Twin Turbo V6 that puts more power out but just doesn’t sound as cool. While I completely understand the idea that having the 5.7 V8 makes us grunt like Tim “The Toolman” Taylor, I can also see why having power, and fuel economy is very enticing.

I bought my 2020 Tundra TRD Pro because I wanted to get the bulletproof 5.7 before they got rid of it. I love the way that it turns heads when I lay the pedal down, and I don’t feel emasculated in any way when my buddy comes over with his Raptor since I know his truck will be in a junkyard at least a decade before mine is off the street.

But I’m okay with accepting the technological advances, and getting significantly better fuel economy for a little bit less vroom-vroom. This is part of the classic definition of an “xennial”.

Toyota has been running twin turbos in other vehicles for a long time, and they know that a staple of the Tundra image is its reliability - so I’m in no way concerned that there is going to be a dip in reliability with Toyota swapping over. If anything, Toyota may be concerned that people with Neanderthal thinking won’t be able to get over the fact that the new truck doesn’t sound tough enough to make their pee-pee feel bigger - so they’re trying to work that out.

I remember when power windows were becoming a more common accessory, my buddy’s dad was adamant that he did not want a vehicle with power windows, and when I asked him why he said “That’s just another thing that can go wrong in this car, the motor might go out to roll down that window - but if I have window cranks at least I know I’ll always have my arm.” - no joke, dude lost his arm in a motorcycle accident less than a year later.

When it comes down to it, I think Toyota has waited long enough to embrace all of the technological advancements that will improve fuel efficiency, and more than likely improve HP without sacrificing anything more than the ball tingling sound of that 5.7 V8 - and I’m excited to see what is next.

Again, Ford and Ram don't tend to offer reliability the way Toyota does.

I legitimately have no idea what your point is here, but I hope you’re having a great Saturday.

I think his point is you have a tag line that says "good vibes only", then you come in here calling folks names if they have different point of view, then you try to lecture anyone who calls you out and explain away your actions with a condescending diatribe of rehashed reasoning and alcohol. That just doesn't mesh well with the good vibes only mantra. Maybe if your tag line said "defensive X-Gen vibes only" then we'd be good with it.

In an ideal world they would offer an updated 5.7 or a new v8 with a ballpark of 5 litre displacement and the tt v6 both with the hybrid option.
For people that really use the truck as a truck the v8 would be for them.
The people that use the truck a few times a year the v6 is going to be the ticket.
Whatever they do mpg's are going to be a big factor in the success of the truck.
Joe truckbuyer looking at a half ton isn't pulling a 10k trailer every weekend or a 30' camper on a cross country journey.
They're using it to tow their lawnmower on a 4x8 trailer to their mother in laws once a week through summer and to pick up a scoop of mulch in the spring for the wife.
The rest of the time it's piddling back and forth to work or around town with an empty bed. Piddling at 25mpg is a hell of alot cheaper than 15mpg. For that, which is the majority of the half ton market, a ttv6 with hybrid option is what will sell.

For me, I tow a 4500lb bassboat 35-40 times a year between 50-180 miles a trip and a 26' 8k lb camper twice a year 300 miles. The rest of my driving is empty to work or running around town. I do haul hunting and camping gear in the fall, but nothing that requires a full size truck. I did everything besides towing the camper with a 4runner.
I went for the tundra because I felt like I was kicking the 4runners teeth in running 70 down the interstate hauling the boat. The camper came later because I had the ability in the tundra.

For how I use my truck, as long as the power and towing are equal to(hopefully better) than my current 16, I'm not ruling it out so long as mpg's are similar to the rumored numbers.
If they do wind up offering a v8 as well, it'd be a toss up depending on the numbers it offered. I'd rather run a n/a bigger displacement motor than a smaller boosted motor.

Gotcha. On a fishing forum I frequent, guys are constantly complaining that the half tons arent built like they use to be and are just grocery getters now and can't tow or haul anything. Then you start comparing numbers and find out that today's half tons are the 3/4 tons of the 90's and early 2000's. I've driven plenty of trucks from the 80's and 90's and will take the modern one all day, there's no comparison. I haven't driven a new Ford to see how soft they are.
