What is the cargo or payload inside of the door jam say

So I’m selling my Tacoma because I bought a travel trailer and my Tacoma cargo is only at 1050lbs... well with 4 people a dog and tongue weight of trailer we are at 100lbs over cargo weight smh. What’s is the tundra 4x4 crew max 5.7L years 2014-2018 payload or cargo weights in these trucks?

The sticker in my SR5 with Upgrade Package says I have 1275 lbs of payload but I haven't weighed the truck to confirm that.

Which trailer do you have? I'm impressed you found one that's close to being within your payload capacity. Is that based on literature or did you actually weigh the hitch when it's loaded?

 

I found the brochure online about my trailer and used the sticker on my truck door jam to do the math. What the brochure doesn’t say if that’s a dry weight or loaded with 2 propane tanks and 2 or 1 batteries

 

That will be dry weight without battery, propane or anything else. I've also heard the manufacturers tend to underestimate the dry weight so you may want to weigh it yourself both empty and loaded. You're asking all the right questions but just be aware that Tundra payload is low compared to the competition so you may want to look at other brands or even at heavy duty trucks.

 

I do like the GMC Sierra 1500 a lot but not sure if they have the same tranny issues as the Silverado’s

 

Well, since they're the same transmissions...

If buying a GM, I would either look for a 2014-2018 with the 6 speed or a 2019+ with the 10 speed and one with the max trailering package that bumps the payload and GVWR up.

 

It's nearly the same truck, just different grille and badging.

 

Damn! Might have to look into the ram trucks I don’t like Fords. I really wanted a tundra but if it only has 200lbs more than my Tacoma that’s not gonna cut it!

 

Those 2014-2018 gm Sierra is what I like. Something with 4x4 I know that will bring down the payload but would be nice to have a 4x4

 

There's nothing good about Rams either except for their Cummins engine. I've read the GM 3/4 ton trucks are supposed to be better than the 1/2 ton models.
Rating the heavier duty trucks, I'd put Ford and Ram in a distant place behind GM.

 

I would definitely not buy a Ram. All my research has led me to believe that GM is the least bad of the domestics.

Definitely the tundra and gm was my first and second choice but damn you tundra for making payloads like the Tacoma smh

 

I sold my 2016 Tacoma to pull a travel trailer. My Taco payload was 1200 and my Tundra is 1100.

 

Are you maxed out with passengers and tongue weight? I don’t trust being 100lbs over cargo max with my taco

Yes. kinda sucks. Not to talk trash, but i can't imagine that it hurts tundra reliability since no one can really do much with these (payload wise) beyond what a minivan or highlander can do.

I have enjoyed my Tundra, but had i known the payload capacity was such a limiting factor i might have gone a different route. Thats on me, no question. I simply assumed something that could tow over 8500 lbs and was this big and powerful would outshine the Honda Pilot it replaced....can't say i don't enjoy it more (especially with the 5.7 breathing through a BA 10" system), but I read 1500 lbs in the brochures and on the website and didn't think to question it further. Good on you for asking before pulling the trigger.

Its pretty standard for most 1/2 tons though. I think though they are bigger and stronger than the mid-size trucks, the bigger engines, components, and overall weight of the vehicle cancel out the additional capacity. I believe it to be a bigger better truck especially at max load. Fully loaded it drives / rides comfortably and with ease and handles well. If you need the payload then the Silverado/Sierra 1500 is the highest i have seen in a 1/2 ton, but i'm skeptical since a lot of the marketing numbers are NOT when equipped with 4x4, oversized cab, big engine, etc etc...

Yes. Tongue weight at 650 plus my wife and dog and me at 300 lbs plus 150 cargo is max payload. The Tundra CM is the worst for PL.

 

You should consider that pulling a trailer with a 700 pound hitch weight in a Taco or Tundra, both rated at 1200 lbs payload is very different. There's 1000 pounds and 100 hp and torque difference.

A more powerful heavier vehicle will tow better even if payloads were the same. Thought you said your taco was 1050 payload. The tundra is as much as 20% more at 1265.
4.30 gears (like the manual taco), tow/haul mode, and gobs of power for the win. If your going over capacity look else where. If you can live within the limits of the tundra there is no better 1/2 ton for the price and longevity. Just get the 38 gallon tank cause it’s gonna guzzle when towing.

 

Your 100% right about being powerful but I can’t get over the payload even though a lot of what I’m reading online like motortrend.com about the tundra for example 2016 Toyota Tundra 4x4 crewcab sr5 off-road says payload is 1440lbs but many are saying 1265lbs. The GMC payload is 1770lbs that would be nice to have in a tundra to put some bikes, ice chest, folding chairs, tools, dog crate, fishing gear, water cases,etc when taking my Trailer up to the mountains for some dry camping

 

Just go test drive all the 1/2 tons and look inside the door jamb to see the payload . Make a decision then .
