I would definitely do all the maintenance items before lifting, it looks pretty good from the pic.

 

What tires do you run? A locker might make things scarier when both wheels break loose, or more fun.

In the rain when I had open diff and the stock Bridgestone duelers I could accidentally kick the back end out even at freeway speed. When I switched to 285 Yoko it only lost traction accelerating around corners a bit hard in the rain. Once I added LSD it takes effort to break a tire loose now even in heavy rain.

In snow or ice its really sketchy and a mild hill can be embarrassing if I don't have momentum, which can become very sketchy.

As has been said, in today's market, that's a great deal. First things first, register it here toyota.com/owners and check the Toyota dealer service history. Personally, I would spend the money to get a carfax (if you didn't before the sale) and see what service history shows there (they will often show non toyota dealer service history). After that, you can make a plan for the servicing it needs. If you plan on driving it on the beach, you definitely want to treat the frame regularly...that's right at the top of your list.

As for lift recommendations, I'm reluctant to give any till you determine what lift/level it currently has...cause that's not a stock height FGT after 20 years...it has some form of leveling/liftng kit on it. Oh, and Welcome!

 

Ah, yes, I forgot to mention that I did run a Carfax on it before I even went to look at it. I’m the third owner; last owner had it for two years and the only reason he got rid of it was because his grandfather passed and his grandmother told him he could have grandpa‘s new truck for whatever he sold his Tundra for.

Truck was regularly serviced according to Carfax and is supported by complete hard copy service records included with sale. Oil changes every 5k miles with receipts. Vehicle was never involved in any accidents. Additionally,all recall work was completed in a timely manner, truck has a 2 inch spacer on the front tires which was placed to accommodate larger tires but it still rubs slightly. This is why I want to get the lift.

Also had a physical inspection and road test by certified Toyota mechanic prior to purchase. Zero differential or oil leaks, suspension looks good, all belts and hoses are in great shape, battery is 4 months old, new starter installed about 3000 miles ago along with alternator about a year ago. Rear differential fluid changed at 115,000 miles as well as transmission fluid. Transfer case serviced at same time. Rear leaf springs replaced at 120,000 miles, along with front wheel bearings & hubs, universal joints and serpentine belt. Power steering and brake fluid flushed at same time.

She goes in next week for new front and back brakes; front are only ones showing signs of wear but I’d rather have it all done at once just so I know everything is completely fresh/solid. I was thinking it made the most sense to go ahead and have the lift kit put on when they did the brakes labor wise but haven’t located a complete parts list for lift kit. Mechanic wants me to bring it back for a second visit after the brake job. He says he’ll give me the parts list when I pick up from the brake job but I feel like that’s been kind of redundant. Yes or no? (Plus I’m anxious to get her out and play). Installing new LED headlight units tomorrow too as OEM’s are in rough shape.

Mechanics comment to me was “I don’t need another truck but if you don’t buy it I’m gonna snap it up and resell it.”

 

Sounds like you got a GREAT deal...well done! If you can, I would determine if it has the original (sized) calipers....if so, I would replace them. Your truck came with S13WE calipers, but because they were weak and warped rotors frequently they were replaced in mid-2003 with S13WL calipers. If you are doing a full brake job anyway, I would upgrade to the 13WLs calipers\rotors\pads. They bolt right up and are no increase in cost compared to the stock calipers\rotors\pads. You can crawl under the truck and look at the calipers...they should be stamped 13WE or 13WL. It may have been upgraded already...MANY early FGTs have been.

As for lifts, what is your budget?

In that range, you can go with Bilstein 5100s front and rear, use stock coils on the front 5100s on an upper setting and an AAL in the rear. It won't be the smoothest ride, but it will be OK. For an additional $200 you can get the appropriate coil springs up front to provide the lift instead of the 5100 perch. It will be a better ride.

There’s only one guy I know who could easily fetch $20-30k for a 2000 Tundra AC 4x4 with a supercharger included and that’s @jbtoy from TS. You could eat off the intake manifold it was so spotless. Think museum quality.

Unfortunately he passed away a few years back. I don’t know if it got sold or passed down in the family truthfully.

Ha! Mine is a 2WD (it has a Peloquin) but it's still a money pit. It also may be the most space efficient 15' long car ever made (IMHO).

 

The salvage title is always interesting to me. Depending on damage and the repair it could be a minor problem that totaled the car so it could mean a good price for a good car. Or the thing could be a flood disaster with caked mud up in everything.

This one doesn't appear to be awful but they don't show pics of the underside. A carfax is needed and it's not a car to buy w/out crawling underneath it.

 

My $6k 2006 Limited with salvage title has been flawless. It had been in a minor front end collision and set off the airbags. I was pretty disappointed to have found the airbags had been gutted and it needed a lot more than just a "reset" - but if you found a truck with everything functioning I wouldn't hesitate to buy. I figured even in a few years with 300k on the odometer, my crew cab 2006 4x4 will still sell easily for $3-4k. I didn't buy the truck for it's resale, I bought it for its reliability. I plan to run it into the ground.

 

The stealership in Roseville I went to last year is raising prices. They're offering a low mileage Double Cab 4x4 for $22k. Funny thing is, the dinged up low mileage 4x2 I looked at is still for sale at $17k...

So my little story is I sold my 2002 RCLB SR5 v8 to a dear friend back in 2010 for below market value. At the time I made several assumptions which in hindsight may not have been correct. The first was that I could get a new RCLB any time I wanted down the road, that went out the window a few years later. The second was that fuel economy would improve substantially in the future and unless we really turn the corner soon on EV pickups that sounds wrong too. The third assumption was that v8 torque would be standard on any decent pickup, those days may be numbered.

The last assumption was a hopefully understood plan that I could have it back any time I wanted it. He's a bit older than me with some back trouble and I think we're getting close to the point where he will want a nicer daily driver. I don't want to force the issue but I definitely do not want to lose track of the truck b/c it's well under 200k miles and it's been in CA it's whole life and well maintained. I was a bit of a fool to sell it in the first place but he's gotten more value out of it than I would have as his kids were grown at the time and mine are in booster seats right now, he's done fun camping and towed a light trailer to several amazing spots while I've been stuck doing household chores.

I am thrilled to envision the mods for it and super excited to one day have it back as a 2nd vehicle and possibly the best pick for real offroading. It's not exactly a great daily driver due to fuel economy and parking lot size but when it comes to occasional hauling or towing it's truly magnificent. It also isn't impossibly oversized vs a new DCLB full size diesel which would be 10x the price and face significant depreciation.

An interesting question may wind up being, what is a fair price. I assume he will want to sell it to me for less than he paid back then which I think was 6 or 7k. I'd gladly pay 10 for it. I really don't want him selling it to some schmo for 3 or 4, that would make me so unbelievably sad. I still have the original purchase form, 24664 + tax came to 27594. With some cleanup it might be worth even more than 10 due to scarcity.

Navigating this transaction will require a delicate touch and some groundwork laid out over the next few years. I think an ideal time for him to buy something nicer would be after this whole new/used car demand shortage gets resolved and we see some price stability. I need to make sure he understands how I'll feel if he doesn't sell it back to me but also make sure he does not feel pressured timeline-wise. That's a super tricky balancing act.
