Steering pump squeal

I have a 2005 tundra sr5. I recently put a kandn air flow in it and started to get a squeal coming from the power steering pump. Only for about 10 minutes when the truck is cold. Once it warms up it goes away. So I drained all the fluid ( was pretty dark ) and put new synthetic atv in it. Let the system run and tried to get the air out. The squeal has gotten worse and worse. So I took the belt off and noticed the pump pulley had about 1/4 inch play in it. so I bought a remain pump from lordco and put it in. Only to notice this pump also had the same amount of play in it. After installing it I topped it up with fluid and agin tried to get the air out. But that has not helped the squeal at all. Was told it could be a clogged line but my steering is always smooth cold or warm. There is no leaks in the system. And the fluid stays at the same level all the time. Am I doing something wrong or could it be the pulley? Is it not suppost to have any play at all?

 

Is it a constant squeal or when you turn the wheel? And it still does it for 10 min with the new pump? How does the belt look?

 

Yes it’s a constant squeal for about 15 minutes when the truck is cold. Once it warms up it goes away. The belt looks brand new

 

Does the squeal change pitch or volume in relation to the throttle?

 

Other than a tensioner maybe having a little play I've not known a pulley to have play. Doesn't mean it's not possible I guess, but that seems like a good way to throw a belt. Given the age of the vehicle I'd probably replace all of the bearing pulleys. I don't think the power steering pulley has a bearing on the pulley itself so that seems unlikely. Are you sure it's the steering pump that's doing it? There's an Ask a Mechanic thread running around here somewhere that you can post your question to as well. @Roman might be able to verify if there's any play on a new one.

 

It doesn’t seem to get louder or change pitch. It gets a tiny bit louder when I give it gas but not much at all. I haven’t changed the belt only inspected it but it goes away when it heats up so I thought maybe being a clogged line. But if it was a clogged line then it should effect the way the truck steers. Which it does not. I’ll try a new tensioner pulley and belt and see if that does the trick. Does anyone else have any play in there power steering pump pulley on there Tundra’s ??

 

Interested in this thread as I’m curious on my next 200k mile timing belt change whether/if all pulleys etc should be replaced at the same time since everything is connected. Preventative thinking.

 

The problem has been resolved. So far so good. I changed the bearing in the tensioner pulley as well as the belt and changed the ps fluid again and bled the system. And has seemed to fix he problem thank you everyone for the help

 

I went a checked my PS pulley and it has no play in it.

 

Thank you. I didn’t think it should have play in it. I am still worried about that as it is a reman and might just buy a new one from Toyota so I don’t run into future problems

I checked mine a few weeks back when doing the valve cover gasket change. Felt good and solid. Belt and water pump were changed out at 110k. She is sitting at 158k now.

Not to reopen an old discussion, but I am having the same type of problem. Thought it was the belt, but dressing made it worse. Noise definitely coming from PS pump. I'm going to just buy a new one and will update with my results.

 

Belt dressing is not a good thing to use on serpentine belts. I'd suggest when you do the new pump to put a new belt on and clean any residue off of the other pulleys.
