Noob question on LED bulbs for everything EXCEPT Headlights and Fog Lights

Will soon have a 2021 Tundra Limited with stock LED Headlights and Fog lights. Eventually considering LEDs for all remaining bulbs (interior, cargo, tail, license, etc.). Can all these remaining original bulbs simply be replaced with LED versions? Reading a lot about potential impacts to other electronic systems in the vehicle, resistors, harnesses, etc. and quite intimidated by it. Any knowledge and advice most welcome!

 

I have done so without issue. The rear turn signals i used required resistors. Everything else works without issue. Details to all the different bulbs can be found in my build thread (see link in my signature)

You only need resistors on blinker bulbs. Everything else is plug and play.

 

For what it's worth, on my '21 I used all Diode Dynamics LEDs for everything (only bulb I haven't replaced is the sidemarker in the headlamps, but, it isn't really noticeable and doesn't make a real difference).

I am one of the "odd" ones where I did not need to add any resistors to avoid the hyperflash, but, as you'll see in another thread on here I have had the hyperflash for a few handfuls of flashes.

A tip for the interior bulbs, if you can't get a good grasp on them to pull them out, take a piece of duct tape, fold it in a U shape around the bulb and use it's grip to pull the bulb out. Also, on a '21, if you pop the fuse while replacing the interior lights, it is located in the fuse block under the dash on the driver's side. The guaranteed way around this is to disconnect the negative terminal on the battery, replace the lights, reconnect and check for bulb polarity (if they don't work, they need to be flipped 180º), disconnect the negative terminal again if needed to flip bulbs, then reconnect.

 

I’ve changed the interior lamps to led on half a dozen vehicles with no issue. Never bothered pulling any fuses or disconnecting the batteries. I’ve just used cheap kits from Amazon, and have only had a couple go out over the years. Not something you need to spend a lot on in my experience.

 

Welcome from WA. I have a '21 CM Limited and recently replaced all of the interior, cargo, third brake, backup, and license plate bulbs with LED. Zero issues and an awesome upgrade. Now I practically need sunscreen inside the truck.

I did replace the footwell bulb also and that was the only disappointment. The light output sucks even with an LED. I'm going to buy the VLED footwell kit and do all four along with adding puddle lights to my mirrors. My truck does not have puddles but there are several threads here that detail adding them to a factory mirror.

Do the newer trucks respond to the flasher "resistance bar to resistor" mod that the earlier trucks do for hyperflash?

 

well the reason this is done is if you use anything that has any bit of metal it it, trying to pry the bulbs out you could end up shorting the housing as the reflector is metal and connected the housing in a way that a lot of people short out the housing, which in turns blows out the BCM which controls the interior bulbs and a lot of other controls tied into the BCM (body control module). those are not cheap at roughly $800 or more depending on the model of the vehicle. you can find threads on here and on tacoma world and 4runner.org where people have blown the BCM.

also if you buy dual polarity led's you dont have to worry about orientation, but i havent bought bulbs in a long time so i dont know if anyone sells them outside of vleds that i know of.

Haven’t tried their bulbs, but with the LED Headlights, the cheap Auxito front blinker bulbs didn’t require resistors (but came with them). Only the rear flashers needed then... so I used the ones that came with my front ones.

Couldn’t agree more. Just don’t get spending $100’s on interior bulbs.

Wow... never heard of that. Thought that’s what fuses are for.

 

The resistor bar mod is a modification to the flasher unit, specifically the '07-10 trucks. Since Toyota uses a proprietary flasher unit, you change our a resistance "bar" in the unit with a 1-2watt resistor to keep your turn signals happy. I had to do this on my '07 with Auxito LED's, even front only. I have a feeling later trucks don't need this, but don't know the year cutoff.
