Wife thinks a work car would be best

The conversation before my Tundra was. "Hey I think I'll get an old 'beater' truck for use around the ranch". I slowly crawled my way up disappointing test drive after test drive, and wound up with my 2008 DC.

It will be interesting to see what you wind up with.

My 2010 Crosstour is my daily. I only live 2 miles from the house - but I don't want to drive the truck every single day. Most days in the summer I even walk to work.

Update: bought a Prius a couple months back off eBay. Wife’s been crunching the numbers...looks like I am saving us 200 bucks a month(that’s on the conservative side) The only thing I did to the car was tint the windows and put floor mats in it.

 

I just purchased a 2014 Subaru Outback as a daily driver. I put 37K on my 2017 Tundra in 10 months and realized I was hurting the residual value. I get paid a car allowance and mileage so it was really a no brainer to keep the mileage off the Tundra, which is now mostly a weekend vehicle.

 

I usually only drive my Tundra on the weekend unless I need the truck for something. I drive an Acura TL all week plenty of power and good gas mileage.

 

My wife and I traded in a 2014 outback for her Highlander limited....they are a great car, unfortunately we only managed 23 average mpg. I am averaging 48 summer and 44ish winter with the Prius. Yes it’s a turd looking car but the mpgs are great!

 

I say if your going to try to save gas ....go big or go home! I actually like the little turd...easy to find parking and even when I drive it like an asshole it still gets great gas mileage. I do miss the Subaru for snow use though...already had to play a video game in the Prius...just to shut off the traction control.

 

Use a bicycle or motorcycle

A cheap commuter can be had for much lower than that.

A small yaris/echo is un killable (except for the front bearings) and can be had in decent shape for 5k$. Oil changes are cheaper too, maintenance also.

Your math are a bit generous on the beater side.

EDIT: Just saw the Prius purchase. It's what makes the most sense these days if you're not an enthousiast about cars...

Those things still have 85% bettery life in them and they won't die so soon.

 

Prius is a good choice! I drive a 99 camry w 280k on the odometer as my daily and it gets beat to hell in town (literally; door dings, hit and runs etc). LOL

 

Yup....these things are used as Uber cars and for salesmen to drive around in. Parts are a dime a dozen and to see them with 400,000 miles is not uncommon. Mine had 130,000 and a 1 owner from Maryland, I paid 4000 for it. The guy put new tires and a fresh inspection sticker on it after I won it. So it’s hard to argue buying it..... I did tint the windows pretty dark ( for my personal space) ...lol

 

sold our old civic and about to lease the 2018 Camry. saving on gas alone from the Tundra will cover half of the monthly lease.

 

Higher MPGs in a beater / economy vehicle sounds great, but it can come with a very high cost - your life.

I sold my ultra reliable 30 MPG Camry and replaced it with an ultra reliable 15 MPG Tundra Tank.

 

Feeling and being more safe isn't necessarily the same. The Camry has better safety rating from the IIHS than the Tundra. That's readily available info on the web...

 

IIHS is a car on car rating... the Truck wins when it's Camry vs. Truck.
That's real world information available on the open road.

 

Do you have any fact based proof that IIHS tests only cars on cars and not the very scenario (cars VS truck)? No you don't, because it's not true.

But you are free to beleive what ever you want, it doesn't change the facts. Facts are stubburn like that...

These Insurance Institute for Highway Safety tests are about the physics of car crashes, which dictate that very small cars generally can't protect people in crashes as well as bigger, heavier models.

 

This study is almost 10 years old.

20 years ago we never thought that carbon fiber could ba a material for a safety cage but now all super sports car are carbon fiber.
10 years ago we didn't have preventive measures and advanced warnings.

Times change and safety too. The Tesla got the highest safety ratings ever and it's not a truck.
