I can not argue with the fact that prices are going up. I bought my 05 SR5 TRD AC with 135k for eighty five hundred two years ago. 10,000 miles later I've was checking the local craigslist and I found Tunndy's with more than 175k on the clock with solid dents and other cosmetic problems going for 10-11k no problem. I know its not quite the right age yet but I would't consider my old girl as a classic. It's definitely not true to the original design. Especially after the 32's and new wheels come in. buts its definitely nice to know that I didn't buy a depreciating asset. and for you picture people here she is... incase I haven't already spammed pictures of this thing enough on this forum.

 

I would argue for those who live in the South with a 4wd truck is that it’s never a waste in buying since you can always sell it to a Northerner rust free in a minute.

 

I think about doing this with the yee yees that are obsessed with square bodies and OBS trucks.

I managed to pick up one last summer for $15K, single-owner, just over 100k miles, and relatively few modifications. I feel like I found a unicorn.

 

Makes me wonder if I should consider picking up a 2006-2007 Sequoia...

 

This would be what I would buy for Wilderness Camping. No need to convert the Tundra, as the Sequoia has that built in shell. Remove the third and second row seats and there is a beautiful platform back there. I remember a friend bought a Sequoia right after I bought my truck in 2002. Think he paid like $48k versus $30k for Tundra. Whoa!

Right now they are way under priced compared to Tundra.

Purchased new in 2000. SR5 4wd with over a quarter million miles. I was considering getting a new Tundra but decided I liked mine better than what Toyota was offering so I recently decided to tend to what needed tending to. Valve cover gaskets and plugs, radiator and pump, timing and serpentine belt... some small stuff.

It has always run smooth as a sewing machine.

 

It's simply recognizing the limitations of rear wheel drive pickup trucks. As others have mentioned, a front wheel drive sedan is better where traction is less than ideal.

 

This is always a debate on forums like this. Some folks go bonkers when someone drills a hole and "ruins" an original specimen. They think the thing should remain unchanged forever because, I don't know why.

I love seeing a bone-stock vehicle that looks like it came off the showroom floor.

I love seeing a highly modded rig that is the exact vehicle its owner wanted.

I have a 1988 motorcycle that I started hacking w/in weeks of purchasing it new and that made some people very sad (some knuckleheads even get a bit angry). I love the comment "you're killing the resale". Who cares, I didn't buy the thing to resell it, I bought it to do what I need it to do. People who only think of resale don't know how much fun vehicles can be.

I have a bone-stock 1977 motorcycle that will easily sell for 2x it's original selling price.

My VW vanagon makes purists cry, I put a Ford engine in it just to make the Deutsch-o-philes sick. It'll still sell for more than it's original selling price but likely not for as much as an unused bone-stock version.

The Tundra is a blank slate. It's stock and does everything it needs to do for me but it has so many possibilities. Who knows where this one goes. I'll gladly forego the BaT payday if it means modding the Tundra to suit my needs.

 

My 2000 Tundra. 453,264 miles. Original. Has pulled offshore boats and fully loaded horse trailers. Keeps going. The mechanics love working on it when I bring it in for service.

 

What makes you think that they dont need the 4wd for construction work?
I am on construction sites all the time and frequently they are impassable when muddy without 4wd.
You want to talk about getting hazed,try asking for a tug then!

It does not need to be ant disdain for 2wd that makes one need 4wd,just a different set of needs period.

 

I dont know where in Maine you live but I have been pretty mired in it out on Mt Desert for sure and would likely have spent some nights in the Tundra had I not had 4wd?

One trip I had a tough time just getting around in Elsworth during a decent dump of snow and nobody was getting anywhere without 4wd or those stupid Subarus flying too fast all over the place like they owned it all.

I have no disdain for 2wd unless I need 4wd and dont have it.

I have also been in plenty of campgrounds towing a trailer and could not get going on slick,wet,muddy grass until I engaged 4wd briefly.

I cant imagine that you seem to think that having 4wd implies a dislike of 2wd,just having different needs hardly implies this to me?

 

Basically, its better to have the 4wd and not need it than 2wd and need it. Case in point, a few years ago the Island got dumped on with 6” of snow. Neighbor across the street (05 DC Tundra) with 2wd couldn’t get out of his driveway when he got to the street curb. He left his truck there for 3 days until the melt. My 02 was Floating Like Butterfly to work to pay taxes.

I had a 87’ 2wd Toyota P/u before the Tundra and there was always a few times I needed and wished for 4wd, but made due without. I vowed the next truck would be 4wd no matter what.

To add to this, my double cab with LSD is worthless on anything remotely slick. I understand why the manual says to turn on 4x4 in the rain.

Does anyone one have experience with a locker in a a 2wd? How does that compare to 4x4?

 

That sucks. Mine is working pretty well still. I did add a Hellwig Rear Sway Bar which helps keep that inner rear tire planted. Super sweet performance. Maybe you need some Michelin Defender Tires?

 

I'm not sure if mine is working or if I had to high of expectations. The old 4runner has a locker and I expected something less capable but similar.

Ive got the factory LSD and on pavement, the only time I get any wheel spin I get both. I’m talking wet/slick/ice.

The only time I’ve ended up with a rear wheel in the air, I used a heavy foot on the brake and was able to get it to move forward enough to get it back down.

I know a locker is completely different, but the LSD is enough for me.

It also doesn’t sound like it would solve any of your problems. If your trucks getting ass happy then the LSD is doing it’s job, which is the same thing that a locker would do. If it’s doing the ok’ one tire fire then your clutch packs are prob toast.

 

I love this guys humor. Pretty spot on Analysis. He could have brought up the Rust Warning a little more living in PA, but that frame was replaced already.

 

Mine may be working fine. Wheel slip on dry or dry with light gravel results in no wheel spin. I don't give it to much trouble though.

I will try the brake tip next time we get snow, so 5 or so years from now... My thoughts on it went something like this. I wonder how the LSD does in the snow (back out of the driveway) Well that feels exactly like on open diff. 4x4 and drive away.

So this 2000 V8 4.7 4x4 was a decent deal at 6k with 133k original miles? The cab was FILTHY as it was a ranch truck, but with a lot of elbow grease it’s cleaning up nicely.

Now I’m looking to toss a lift kit on it, but know just enough to be dangerous. Using it to haul the occasional load to the dump/from the lumber yard but mostly play in the sand here in the Oceano Dunes (Pismo Beach).

Was looking at a Rough Country or Bilstein 3” lift...any feedback on pro/cons would be greatly appreciated. Don’t want to spend an arm and a leg but don’t want to waste $$$ on a POS either.
