1st Gens Are Entering Legendary Status

Personally, I would never buy a 2WD Truck if I know its a available in 4wd. I need it for Beach Driving and the occasional Himalayan Snow Storms we get during Monsoon Season.

I have no hate towards 2wd trucks, though. I did own an 87 Toy P/u that was 2wd and it did me right, but couldn’t Beach/Snow Drive it and vowed only 4wd from there out.

 

Not much love for the 2wd tunny here but many don't have a need for 4x4. A reliable truck for home depot runs and various other day to day missions is just as important to some. 75k miles on a 2wd tundra can surpass $10k easily even with a paint faded hood.
Don't forget, 2WD is also lighter and more nimble. It will smoke that 4x4

 

This is true. The 4wd adds something like 300-400lbs with the diff case and axles/shaft.

 

Have you tried replacing the oil pan gasket, exhaust manifold gasket? Not a fun job on those 4x4 models, it might be easier to pull the engine than trying to get it from the underside.

 

I wouldn't take a penny under $15K for my truck, especially in today's market.

 

I debadged my truck so I don't care about that. I already explained this in the other thread but 2WD trucks don't do well in Tennessee. Years ago I posted a picture on Facebook showing my tiny Corolla fitting under a downed tree on one of our back roads. My family from MN was more fascinated with the road. They said the road looked like a "goat path". Growing up my dad had 2WD Mazda pickup trucks that were completely useless anytime it snowed. Perhaps on flat ground you can get around but that won't work around here. I'd rather be in a Honda Civic than a RWD truck in the snow. Aside from the snow, we have so much red clay and steep terrain I've seen 2WD trucks just get stuck as soon as they get off pavement.

Honestly, I have a hard time believing you are doing much of anything in snow unless you are running snow tires or chains and adding a bunch of weight to the bed.

 

Yet if I go to some dealerships they won't even look at my 02 Tundra and just offer me $500 for it since it's 18-19 years old. I feel insulted.

Hell, just a running Tundra goes for $1000 at the salvage yard.

 

I don't understand the dislike for 4x2 trucks either. 4x4 is great when you really need it, but it's not needed 99% of the time. I only considered 4x4 trucks when I needed a work truck because I have gotten myself stuck in a 4x2 work truck while on the job ... I never wanted that to happen again. I made my 2002 4x4 Tundra a dedicated work truck in 2003... I have used the 4WD often and I've not gotten stuck. I would be happy with a 4x2 1st Gen if I didn't earn a living the way I do... buy what you need, and don't worry about what others think.

I like the look of a Taco, but always found them too small for my needs. As for the 2nd Gen Tundra, the 5.7L, 6 speed, 4 wheel disc brakes, and tight turning circle are awesome. I also prefer the larger door handles, larger column shift lever, larger control knobs, switches & buttons. The 2nd Gen also has a lot more aftermarket support going for it. My 2007 is 4x2 making it 490 lbs lighter than the same model that is 4x4... I don't have 4x4 envy in this truck.

 

I know there are people here who are just daily driving these trucks, one smooth driveway down a smooth road to park in another smooth parking lot. That's it. I heard a second gen owner tell best buy they couldn't put a TV in his truck because he didn't want to hurt the bedliner.... I guess a truck is a statement? Not sure what the statement is though. I use my truck for truck things. I fill bed up. I hit the bumpstops. I get stuck in light mud and turn on 4x4 so I don't tear up tear stuff up. Maybe it is 1% of the miles I travel but I bet I am in 4x4 every month. I find 4x4 incredibly useful in very brief intervals when doing truck things. To top that off, If I have the choice of trying unstuck a Honda civic in the mud or a rwd truck I would pick the civic everytime. So to me a rwd when it comes down to it is lesser than a Honda civic when it comes to traction. I don't hate rwd and they definitely have a purpose but they massive massive loss of functionality would prevent me from ever owning one unless I had 2 trucks.

 

I've used my cars to do truck things, and my trucks to do car things...

The vast majority of cars that I have owned were rear wheel drive, knowing your vehicles capabilities
and limitations is just as important as knowing your own capabilities and limitations behind the wheel.

Of the 60+ vehicles that I have owned, one was AWD, and two have been 4WD.

 

When I'm just exploring down dirt roads, I can handle 2wd and keep myself out of trouble. When hunting season rolls around the option to turn around and/or go a different route often doesn't exist. Throw in a boat, 4 wheeler or dog trailer and it can quickly get worse. Add going out on nasty days when most people stay home. The last time I got stuck with a trailer behind me I swore no more 2wd.

@MEWaters it's true some people have an irrational disdain for 2WDs. For some, it's the implied ruggedness the TRD badge represents that they hope to transfer to their ego. The same thing happens in other forums where there's a choice. I come from VW Vanagons where the Syncro (4WD/AWD) is revered and fetches stupid money. Some of those Syncros are driveway queens, some have off-road pin stripes and are shown defying physics. Some 2WD (if they have a LSD/TBD diff, the rest are 1WD) also do amazing things.

In north Idaho, I needed a 4WD and the Tundra was the perfect solution. I often test situations (like heading up the icy hill to get to the road) and I'd be stuck at home with a 2WD Tundra.

I don't hate a 2WD version of the best pickup truck ever made. Ignore those who do.

I just dont see a massive loss in productivity or wijkd rather have a civic than my tundra. I do live in Maine.

I would personally never have a 2wd truck unless it was a desert longtravel style build only for that. For a daily driver i need a 4x because of how often i would get stuck in my drive way with out it. 16+in snow storms every couple weeks during the winter aren’t at all uncommon where i live. That being said I don’t at all condone 2wd either.

 

I live in south florida and rain is the main reason I would use 4x4. Aside from that, 2wd is a majority of my driving. That is why I didn't have a problem buying a 2wd truck. All arguments for 4x4 are valid but 2wd trucks have a place a use for some.

 

Someone earlier said it depends on lifestyle. Here in Seattle, almost every construction/landscaping company is rocking a first gen tundra. It's almost kind of sad seeing a construction company using a first gen that's totally trashed and I see a 4wd badge on it cause I know they probably don't need it. I know for my lifestyle, I spend every other weekend up in the mountains so I need 4WD. But for those who just use it for work trucks for home depot runs and towing lawn mowers, they don't need 4wd. But I'll work on their first gens here at the dealership and they'll have 300k on them going strong.

 

I hunt and fish and live in northern Alberta. Gravel roads that turn to thick heavy mud when it rains, deep snow and ice for 4 or 5 months a year, poor road plowing and maintenence, mountain roads and remote wilderness all around. 2wd trucks are simply not an option for me. I get around town fine most of the year in our Corolla and both vehicled run studded winter tires during the freezing month. When we leave town though, we take the truck and more often than not I end up using 4x4.

Just in general, 2wd trucks are exceedingly rare here, like I see one a couple times a year, and our Corolla is part of the maybe 10% of vehicles in our area that isn't a truck, SUV or all wheel drive crossover.

Back to the primary topic: First Generation Tundra trucks are legit, and they are prized.

 

No love for the Sequoia PHM? Body on frame, center diff lock and the 4.7 doesn't scream Soccer Mom Mobile to me.. but I'm a little bias
Paid $12.5k for our '04 in 2016 with 90k miles on it.

 

I like them. I’ve actually been considering a Sequoia which is why I look. I just don’t drive that much anymore and having another vehicle is a waste. There is a certain area near the Island where the Sequoias are always selling for cheap. Its like Sequoia Heaven.

They probably had every little maintenance their Toyota service advisor recommended. Sounds like a vehicle I want to buy.

 

Yesterday I had to use 4x4 to get out of a regular parking lot that was sloped, because of ice. I will never own a 2 wheel drive truck ever again, it is extremely frustrating. Sorry but I have owned a 2wd tundra and honestly glad I wrecked it cause now I have a 4x4. I live in a snowy region though.

 

YES. I would rather drive my 2001 Camry in the snow than a 2wd pickup of any sort. Nuff said
