I picked up my friends car from the airport today. 2210 lb trailer on the way down, add a 3800+ Car on the way back. 277 mile round trip Tank was filled before leaving and filled after dropping the trailer. Averaged 13.8 mpg with speeds at 65-70.
Towed it fine, left overdrive on for most of the trip. Letting out throttle and keeping the ‘Load’ (scan gauge readout) under 85 would keep the torque converter locked in 4th gear. If I started losing to much speed on hills I’d flip the OD off button and maintain speed then catch it back on the downhills.

obviously the mpg problem I’m seeing is from towing my sail as it is much lighter than this combo. I contacted the company who made that 10 gallon tank to see if it can handle gasoline. If it can I’m pretty set on purchasing it. If not I’m still considering ideas.
Thanks all for your thoughts and ideas.

    From the 05-06 manual:
    Screenshot_20210221-144838.jpg

Average is 250cc for the VVT-i motor as well.

The larger CC injectors that Keith/dirtydeeds supplies are for e85 (high ethanol content 85%) which requires 40% more volume to make the same power as gasoline.

Cool. Thanks for the clarification. Iirc, he said the larger (270cc) goes on the vvti but do your own homework if you are buying these.

Yeah I’m not sure why either! I was suprised to see that kind of mileage. What kind of fuel do you use and do you have bigger tires? I didn’t have much of any headwind either, if anything, a tailwind.

I should add, what’s your driving type? Very few of my shifts are over 2700 rpm. Even when towing.

Relatively stock tire size (265/75/16). Variety of towing weights and situations. A 10 x 6 trailer with a side by side on it (likely 2000#) will yield around 9.5-10mpg at 65 mph on relatively flat ground. That's about 180-190 miles with 1/4 tank left. My 28ft. travel trailer (around 7000#) at 55-60 mph no OD would get around 7-8.5 mpg. That's about 150-160 miles with 1/4 tank left. I would describe my driving style as closer to grandpa than grand prix. Normal mpg avg. is around 16-16.5 mpg. I usually hit 285-300 miles at 1/4 tank left. Figures could be adjusted slightly for the tire size.

Interesting. I think I drive the same style as you. Is it windy where you tow? Where I tow it usually isn’t. I’m not really sure what to tell you! I wish I had a better answer!

I have a 2001 xcess cab. I generally 14-15 mpg. When hauling my popup camper (3500 gross weight), I got 11-13 on my last trip (one way climbing, coming back downhill, though hilly both ways.

I believe somewhere else he posted about the cost being prohibitive going to a custom enclosed trailer. Vectors are super wide, and the doors open weird.

very interesting that you got that kind of mileage towing that kind of weight. Good for you!

another interesting thing is what load percentage your truck downshifts at. in OD at 60-65MPH, my truck with the K&N intake will unlock the converter at 55% load. on the stock intake it would downshift at 70% load. I'm still trying to wrap my head around what exactly that means, since our transmissions shift based on throttle percentage.

so in theory, lower load % at the same throttle % equals less power to the wheels at a given throttle %, which means my intake is giving me less power on the low end.

That is interesting. I was surprised and impressed. With just the empty trailer on the way down it required no thought. Cruise control at at 70. The way back was more engaging with a passenger and the car on the trailer.

My previous vehicle you could run all the way up to 98%, but if I remember correctly I was trying to keep it out of third gear. I believe always towed with OD off which locked out 5th and 6th gear.

I would just use a couple 5 gallon jerry cans, use the tractor supply fill necks for easy/fast fill ups.

The Snow Performance methanol tank is a good option for meth injection or maybe diesel. Probably not a good idea for gasoline. These tanks are not rated for “flammable liquids”.

I’m playing OBO on eBay currently. Have another 460 mile round trip with the camper to Cleveland on Monday. It will probably push me over the edge to do something.

i fully understand most people’s opinion of carrying a couple jerry cans. On long trips I will probably carry 5 gallons as a just-in-case, but I want to be able to drive 3-4 hours at a time between stops.

With two young kids, they’re fine if you keep them happy in the car, but as soon as you stop and get out they want to stop and get out. This adds significant time to trips.

I’d rig up some kind of Safety Harness for the kids so they can climb out the back window and fill the tank using Jerry Cans whilst continuing driving without stopping. It will teach the kids hard work and safe risk taking while at the same time giving them some fresh air adrenaline. Win win win.

I remember those days. 7.5 hour trip to visit the grandparents 5 x year. If all went well, we’d make 1 stop midway for fuel, food, pee. It frequently didn’t work out that way.

I wouldn't worry to much about it being rated for gasoline. I've used some water containers sold for fuel use at a cart racing shop. I've used them for 10 years and I will never buy California approved fuel containers again. I spill 0 fuel with these can. Shop around some 4wheeler, cart racing, pwc sites and see what is out there.

I was talking about a permanently mounted fuel cell, not a gas can. I did post pictures of how to get around using those anti-spill fill necks that spill every time though.

You need a smaller trailer, OR a diesel truck. Failing that, plumb in a 2nd tank under the bed...rigged so you can hit a switch in the cab and pump the main tank almost full again, when the main tank drops below 1/8th. If you install a 2nd tank and try to feed it to the engine, that'll take another return line.
If you aren't traveling with spuds now, stop and smell the roses whenever you can...just allow more time off to travel, etc., because when you have spuds you'll be stopping at every McDonalds along the way...can you scream "Happy Meal?" The idea of training the spuds for on-the-go refueling is golden, too...

Purchased that tank off Amazon and tested for fit.
Had to trim one of the brackets to get it where I want it. Now I just need to get my fittings and fuel line, and mount it. To be continued.

That's awesome. Is there a way to lock the gas cap? Looking forward to seeing the plumbing for this. I have no need for it, just nerding out cause I love to see useful mods vs. pretty mods.

No there isn’t unfortunately. Typically i have a cover over the bed which should be some deterrent.
I may have to cut an access port in it and make a flap in the cover as I don’t think I can just unsnap that corner of the bed cover to refuel.
