Trd swaybar install ?

I’m curious. I can use the extra handling but I do like to go Offroad. Why shouldn’t I install one of these if I go Offroad?

 

limits wheel travel, droop to be specific. more for a crawler or trail runner. if you are just doing light off road it probably won't affect you.

 

Does this affect or limit the benefits of the TRD Pro suspension? I do some off-road work hunting, also buying a RV trailer so some towing.

 

I thought it was a part of the TRD Pro kit? if not It shouldn't hurt anything other than a little bit of the travel. It may limit it. But If you are only doing minor off road and not rock crawling, you will notice the better handling on the road. Probably won't notice the limits on trail driving or minor off roading

 

Does it interfere with the use of the air bags? I only fill them up to keep it level when I tow my toy hauler, not to lift it.

 

Not on mine. I have the same thing for the same reason.

 

I installed the TRD swaybar on my 14 CM yesterday. Man what a difference in the corners! Fairly easy install on my own. Wish I would have done this earlier.

That one right there should fit 2007-2019

 

For those that have installed this on their own, I have a few questions.

- Does the truck need to be on a level surface when installing, or can this be done on a driveway with a slight slope?
- Did you put the rear wheels on blocks, or can it be done without any lift?

I don't believe it would be an issue installing the rear sway bar on a slope, but it may be best to be on level ground. Also, no lift is needed for the install, you can crawl underneath and perform the install (assuming your truck is at least stock height).

 

I loosely installed the drop links to the frame and then to the sway bar. I then used a floor jack from in front of the rear wheel to raise the sway bar into position under the axle. The install is very easy, it just takes quite a few 1/4 turns with the torque wrench before you hit 48 ft/lbs on the ubolts.

I have Bilstein 5100’s on the rear. It handles really well. Will it handle any better with the anti sway bar. I’m not getting much sway even at 90 mph.

 

Even with the 5100's on the rear, if you slap one on there you'll notice a difference without any sacrifice to ride quality.

 

Got mine installed last night. Pretty easy, except for removing the factory bolts. Borrowed a neighbor's breaker bar and no problem.

As everyone has said, the handling is much better.

 

Get the beefy solid Sway Bar if you do this. I have the

$500 Hellwig 7700 Solid, Heat Treated Chromoly, 1-1/8" Rear Sway Bar

Hellwig 7700 and it has 3 settings which are adjustable depending on your preference. This Rear Sway Bar is a huge handling improvement at all speeds. Great on higher speed lane changes and for tow/haul.

 

Likely a dumb question, but I'm new to this.

When retorquing after 500 miles, do you loosen up the bolts first and then retorque, or just retorque from the current position?

I installed a friend's rear sway bar and the U-bolt nuts bent up like this but never reached 48 ft-lbs of torque.

I quadruple checked the torque wrench and it worked fine for the frame bolts and the bolts on the hanger rods.

I checked it against the one I just installed on my own truck and my hangers don't have any bend like this.

I am wondering if there is a problem with the hangers. I've seen that many have noticed it takes a lot of turns to torque these, but that is a bit ridiculous.

 

Did you lubricate the threads? If so, lubrication throws off the torque numbers. I ask because it looks like there is never seize around the area.

 

I put a dab of never seize between the touching metal parts and some must have gotten on the threads. I didn't think it would have that much of an effect. The right side isn't as bad and did torque out eventually.

Now I wonder if I can get a pair of replacement brackets without buying the whole shebang again. I may have to take it off and degrease it and see if I can get it right. Maybe bend the ears back in a bit.

So anyone else doing this, really listen when they say don't put any lube on this area.

 

The mount is more than likely mild steel. I say pound it out and install some larger steel washers. Should be fine. Worst case is it squeaks and you need to replace the mount.

 

You most likely will never get it to 48lb/ft now. Once that mount bends it has give. As youre torquing down the nut the mount will just bend before you reach 48lbs, so rather than reaching the torque spec youre just applying that force to the failing mount.

Simple antiseize and torque numbers this low will not make a difference.
You will have more variance in the calibration of the torque wrench than will be effected by antiseize.

 

I picked up a replacement kit from McGeorge Toyota. I screwed up, so I want to make it right. Looks from the existence of that kit I'm not the first to bork it.

I'm just surprised that the bracket is that weak to bend like that if the slightest bit of lube gets on the u-bolt and nylock nut. 48 ft-lbs doesn't seem like much.

Antiseize did not cause the bracket to bend.

I would have backed the nut off slightly and ran it just like that.
Worse thing that would happen is a noise maybe.
