This is my second Sequoia. First was an '04 Limited and I think I loved her, lol! Had her for about 3 years before I upgraded her to the '08 Limited due to worsening rust issues with the chassis (pre-recall as far as I know). Both were used vehicles and the '08 was purchased at the end of '11. I was happy with everything until I wasn't. Time for some updates!

Next came the brakes. Tired of OEM and dirty rims. Upgraded to the Power Stop Z36 Truck & Tow Performance Kit with Powder Coated Calipers from Rock Auto. Love 'em, too. Thanks to my bro for installing them!!

Next came the interior and reverse lights; all LED. Inexpensive upgrade with big results, especially when backing out of my long, ascending driveway. No interior pics but here's one of the difference with a partial reverse light upgrade and backing out of the driveway is now a breeze with my aging eyes!

Remember, the point of the upgrades was the chrome delete and so far I did a few fairly significant things for everyday use, but still no chrome delete. In order to save money, and confirm that I was done with the chrome, I decided to purchase black sapphire plasti-dip from www.dipyourcar.com. Fonzie and his team were real easy to work with and having a portal through a FB group really made getting questions answered quickly. I decided this mechanism of a chrome delete was better for me. I purchased two kits at the beginning of the year, and they arrived right away, but I wasn't able to get started due to the colder temps in my unheated workshop. The plan was to dip all the chrome; wheels, grill, mirror covers, badges, and that thing on the liftgate that says, Sequoia.

I was in an accident a few years ago and there was a fair amount of damage to the driver front quarter panel. Body shop did a fantastic job but only replaced the driver headlamp instead of both. Well, over time the passenger headlamp hazed over and the driver side remained looking perfect. This drove me nuts! Tried the toothpaste trick and that only lasted a few weeks or so.
    IMG_20200102_155709000_HDR.jpg

Time for some new headlights. I knew I wanted aftermarket projectors and after a lot of research I picked up some Spyder knock-offs for cheap. I knew these headlamps came with mixed reviews but I figured they were worth a shot after purchasing a three year warranty on them thru Amazon. I learned from some of the reviews and sealed the lens/housing with silicone and gave the lense a healthy layer of protectant so I'm feeling fairly confident. Time will tell, but after 3 months I still do not have any condensation issues and I haven't received any flip offs by oncoming traffic.
    IMG_20200126_142845172.jpg IMG_20200126_151943532.jpg IMG_20200126_161642429_HDR.jpg

You'll notice in the last pic that my passenger headlamp washer cover is missing. Turns out it fell off when I was changing the headlamps and I drove over it. Not only did I smash the cover but also the connector on the end of the $200+ headlamp washer actuator, pic below. Been trying to purchase something from a salvage yard to no avail. If anybody is parting out a 2nd gen let me know as a couple other part outs failed for me. I did purchase a new cover from Cool Springs Toyota but the cover arrived in a brighter blue color than my rig...hence my post in this forum... https://www.tundras.com/threads/paint-code-help-needed-for-1f9-slate-metallic.64888/ Still have to figure out what I'm gonna do about color-matching the paint inexpensively. Looks pretty bad but better than the square hole, I guess.

Next came the black handles (1st part of the chrome delete, finally)! I got scammed on FB for 60 bucks after trying to purchase black handles off a guy who wanted to go back to chrome. Turns out everybody knew he was a scammer and he got bumped from a bunch of groups. Well, he got 60 large from me and I got it back from my credit union. Decided to purchase from somebody a bit more credible, yep Amazon. Install was a breeze and I love the look!
    IMG_20200327_193119611.jpg

Sadly, both my power folding mirrors went in the 1st three months of the year. Since I fold the mirrors everyday at work, etc I had to get new one's quick. Amazon! Unfortunately, they only come with chrome covers. Luckily, I found a set of black covers and LED fog lights from good 'ol Amazon.

Time to take the edge off the rear lights. Thanks to @Beau for posting the awesome job he did on his rig with Vvivid airlift tint. He made it look so easy. Bought the materials (from Amazon) and sat on them for weeks waiting for a warm day in March (Eastern PA, could happen!). Got anxious and got to business on a balmy 55F day. Results didn't come out as expected. Totally botched outside left and used that film to do the little circle reflectors at the bottom and the 3rd brake. Moved onto the inside left and messed it up only a bit. Decided to leave it and order another roll and give it another try. Sadly, Amazon shipments are much longer these days so I'm hoping for warmer day after 19 April when it is supposed to ride. Can you dig the pics? Stay tuned for round 2. BTW, I did reach out to a local tinter and he wanted $150 to use his own product, Luxe. Says its the best and he won't touch my stuff 'cause it's crap. I still like the Vvivid product and it gets good reviews so I'm willing to try it again. However, if I do fail Plan C will be the Luxe 'cause I can't stand the bright red lights any longer!

My mom has an '08 Sequoia SR5.

The driver side headlamp washer is boogered. I need to get around to replacing that whole unit. That's the only way I know to get the clip holes back for the washer nozzle. If you get around to it before me let me know how it goes!

(Side note, I've been drinking today. I may have not read everything correctly. It kinda looks like you've got the full washer assembly, and didn't have to replace that. I might be wrong, or just too lit.)

Tell your mom she should get rid of the headlamp washers and replace them with the cool LED light strips that when she can sell me what I need cheap from the passenger side! I have everything that I need except for the piece that have circled in the pic - that pic was taken from the driver side, the good side.

Tired of looking at all the rust on the hitch. Had the chassis sprayed as part of the recall last year and they touched nothing that had to do with the hitch they installed. Oh well, sanded the hitch with a wire wheel, and gave it two coats of a Rustoleum anti-rust spray followed by two coats of black semi-gloss. Oh, and I did all the screw and bolt heads when the gate is open. Love the look! Cheap but effective - and yes, got the supplies from Amazon.

Finally got the grill. Was gonna plasti-dip the original grill but since it was on the front of the truck I figured it would get a lot of road rash over the years from pebbles, etc. Had been wanting the TRD Pro grill for the Tundra but was scared it wouldn't fit right or I would need the hood, too - love the bump! Was getting a lot of mixed guidance, so I said 'F' it and got the one that Beau got - thanks for the tip - $130 delivered from China! Can't say I love it right now - just installed it today, but I'm hoping it grows on me. I know I'll like it more if I color match the surround so that might be the route I have to take. FYI, if you do replace your grill you will probably break some clips. I broke the two outer clips yesterday and got my local Toyota shop to order me new ones which arrived today. Got home, put on the clips, attached the grill to the hood by the clips, it's windy as crap today, and the wind ripped the grill off the hood and snapped one of my 10min old clips! Said F-it skipped the good clip in the corner and bolted it onto the hood. Once finished I snapped the plastic connector that holds the hood release cable to the hood release lever. Went back to local Toyota, picked up the part and threw it all together. I'm done for now. I can't get the top of the grill to clip into the hood and I'm told (thanks Beau, you're probably right) that the female clips in the hood might be toast. We'll see what happens. Like I said, I'm done for now. You'll notice the trash can blown over in the yard, very windy today, too! Time for a beer. Cheers!

Here's a pic of the old grill from the back which shows in red the two clips I broke. Yellow show the locations of a different clip. I didn't think to take pics of the female connections on my hood but they might need to be replaced too since I can't get the grill males to connect to them.

Things I need to get around to on moms unit.

I told her about headlight revolution with the 2nd gen tundra headlight upgrade (which fits these.)

Mistake on my part. Shes dying for them. Maybe when I recieve stimuli now that I am officially laid off that will happen.

    Also, not drunk this time.

Thanks Brownsfanhere! - Funny, I was a Browns fan for the middle 30 years of my life (not first 10 I suppose or last 10 since having kids and way less interest in watching sports). Never really met any other Browns fans. Few people could understand why since I'm from the Philly burbs. Still always a Philly (all sports) fan down deep. Thanks for all the love. Many way better builds on this site but I love my rig. And,........NO, not gonna sell it. New rigs are TOOOOOO much and I love not having payments. I get a lot of awards at work for doing above and beyond type stuff and I always cash in my points for Amazon GCs. Aside from the grill and brakes (which I needed to pass inspection) no pennies on these upgrades came from my pocket.

That'll be nice to redirect some of our stimulus funds on your mom's rig. Sorry you're laid off, Noah. I hope things turn around quickly for you. I'm grateful to be an essential worker who needs to go into the office about 1x/week so I get to WFH most other days.

John, we were essential until yesterday. We had a large area move at work to be completed. Power in, airlines, and other things needed to be run to various presses, clip machines, cutters, etc. Once we were done management chose 4 maintenance men to continue working as a core group. Taking care of water leaks, and what not.

I was not among them. This is fine as I am fortunate that I have a guaranteed job when we return, and that our company will continue to pay the insurance premiums during this time. Our insurance will still be valid, however upon our return the premiums must be paid back via our paycheck.

    Kinda sucks, kinda doesn't.

Also, side note some of the processes we have at work produce your rear glass weatherstrip. I have seen the machines, amd worked on the machines that make your doorseals, all 4 occupant doors. I have seen, and worked on the machines that make your rear glass weather strip.

I would love to go into details, but that is all proprietary information. Last thing I need is to be fired during my lay off.

Just know where I work does not make any glamorous trim pieces we all love like hood emblems, or anything like that. We make the things that make these vehicles quiet, and watertight. Also, airbags. As much as some people hate them, or love them. If you saw how these were made it'd change your perspective on them

Round 1 of plasti-dip complete; the emblems. This is the last phase of my full chrome delete. Phase 2 will occur this summer on my wheels. Color is Black Sapphire and I purchased rattle cans from dipyourcar.com. The application was way easier than I made it out to be. Glad I'm finally done w/ the emblems.IMG_20200628_182530063.jpg IMG_20200630_153932499.jpg IMG_20200628_182545326.jpg h

Been awhile since I posted. Didn't stop at the inexpensive COVID-19 mods through 2020.

Plasti-dipped the wheels the finish out the chrome delete.

Little bit of paint on the horns. Subtle with hood shut.

    LEDs in the projectors finally.

Little bit of retro on the grill.
    IMG_20201020_172021343.jpg

Finally got the front windows tinted to match the others and also tinted all the rear lights to mute them just a little bit

That's it for now until X-max when I got a new 10.2" Android HU.

Extremely interested to see how the HU turns out and wondering what has to be purchased to retain stock features.

The family got me an awesome X-mas present this year - the 10.2" Dasaita Head Unit. They newest, fastest model which installed with a very clean, OEM look in my 08 Sequoia.

Since the HU came w/ 3 USB ports I ended up replacing some of my blanks w/ USB ports which led to the installation of three dual QC3.0 USB chargers. Even though Dasaita said my AUX input would work...it didn't. I ended up replacing the OEM w/ a AUX/USB combo to connect my SiriusXM PnP unit and wired Android Auto.

(After you read this be sure to check the update below)

The part you really want to know - yes, I lost use of the RES. Not a problem since nobody uses it. Just hate having that thing up there when I know it doesn't work. I think it can still be used if we plug RCAs into it from say a portable DVD/BlueRay player or a gaming console, etc. Perhaps we'll need to figure something out before our 8 hour drive to the Outer Banks this summer. Everything else works like it did w/ the OEM w/ two minor exceptions; 1) the rear camera trigger is no longer working. Seems to be a fluke in my truck and Dasaita has been really supportive w/ over 50 email exchanges since xmas and two free $60 harnesses. While the camera doesn't trigger to come on, my AGAMA launcher has a punch thru button to show the rear camera image on the display. Additionally, I have set the camera to auto launch at boot up (which is like 3 secs from sleep). 2) I lost my fader. Sux cause I actually used it w/ the fam in the car. I think the fader controls thru the amp are only controlled thru the OEM HU so it is advisable to set it at center before you remove it from the dash. The awesomeness of this HU overshadows the two minor flaws. My plans for the future might be to upgrade the rear cam to HD and add a front HD which seemlessly blends behind the rear view mirror. (share some recommendations if you have them). All the other questions you might have can be answered in the link to the HU in Amazon; https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0838Y9DDX?ie=UTF8

    Here's some pics...check it out!

With the Agama launcher using phone hotspot and with Android Auto.
    IMG_20210221_HU Finished1.jpg IMG_20210221_HU Finished2.jpg

New Connections: The HU came w/ 3 female USBs which are now terminated into a dual USB hub and a AUX/USB combo hub for SiriusXM PnP unit and Android Auto. Dual QC3.0 chargers were added for front, middle and back seats.

Links to hubs and chargers can be found in posts 1549 and 1559 @ https://www.tundras.com/threads/dasaita-android-head-unit.45126/page-52 . This thread is the bible when considering installation of a Dasaita HU in a Tundra (especially) or Sequoia.

    29 Oct 2021 Update:
    • The RES is still useable, independent of the HU. We still use it with the wireless headphones and control the movies w/ either the remote or the OSD.
    • Trigger to rear camera now works! Stumbled onto a YT video that said to set Prohibit Reverse to Enable. I know I tried this previously but it worked this time (see pic below for settings).
    • Fader still doesn't work :( and I really miss it!

I've been looking for a suitable head unit for my mom's Sequioa. This looks like a winner.

I do have one gripe with your post though.
Clean your camera lens before taking pictures. The picture quality will improve dramatically. If your camera lens is broken, there's not a whole lot you can do about that. (I had a S9 with a broken camera lens. It sucked trying to take regular pictures with the "selfie" camera.)

Holy shit! Thanks for calling me out. I was gonna fire back because I always keep my lens clean - I just don't look at it often. I was actually gonna blame the crappy technology of my Motorola phone. Instead, I thank you since I now know that my lens is smashed! Total spider web. Amazon... F! BTW, you can get new lenses on Amazon. I purchased one a while back for this phone when I smashed it the first time. I have to start removing it from my pocked when I use the snow blower. That had to be when it happened.

Looking awesome! Do you plan on painting the grill surround or leaving it as is? I usually like the color matched grill surround, but in that color and with those other flat black parts, I’m on the fence. Great job on the radio. I though about swapping my pioneer for a large screen one but didn’t want to give up the reliability of a major company.

Thanks man. I really like the color matched look but I got the run around from a local autobody that I use. I also looked into the spray cans and there are actually two different shades for my color - one is more gray and one is more blue. I kinda bailed after that point but would love to revisit. We'll see. Looking at my user name pic now it looks like a clown nose or something on the front. I just try not to obsess about it or I'll go crazy. BTW, saw you re-enlisted in the Air Force. Nice! Thanks for your continue service.

Interested in more picture of the HU fitment. What trim kit did you use around the screen?

Dasaita sells two models; a single DIN flush mount and a double DIN tablet that protrudes from the dash. The former, what I got, doesn't require a trim kit but the latter does. I love the clean look. Follow the link to Amazon above for more info.
