Seized rear diff breather valve

Alright guys so I took off my rear diff breather and a lot of pressure got released from the pumpkin, so its shot. Is there anyway I could remedy it before I get a part from Toyota? Is the top of the valve supposed to be kinda loose and free floating? Cause I saw in a youtube that one wiggles on the top. Maybe I could take some pliers and unseize it for the time being. I just dont want to drive around with a non functioning breather valve anymore. Any advice is much appreciated

 

Did you hear air releasing or did you mistake that noise for a vacuum?
Soak it in degreaser and it should be good to go, it’s only a one way breather, breathes out not in

 

Buy new. I posted the part number for you yesterday. Under $10.

Shoulda just left it on and squiggled the cap loose. Now since its off use two sets of pliers and twist. Maybe smack it with a hammer loosely. Squirt it down with penetrator.

 

I'm just getting one from advance auti right now. It's just a valve so I dont mind going non Toyota

Alright well, now I remember why to only buy Toyota parts.. the Chinese one does not screw in all the way by a hand, so I'm not risking messing up these threads. Went ahead and hammered on the my one, and got it to work.

 

That threading on the diff/breather is a special BPT (British Pipe Thread).

 

With whatever elements are corroding it that way you may want to consider the diff breather mod. I live in the rust belt and my 10 year old diff breather worked fine, looked in better shape too. Just food for thought. It’s cheap insurance!

I did a DIY rear diff breather mod, super easy. Took about 15 minutes and totally worth it, especially if you hit the trails, if not it's an insurance piece.

 

The best repair is extending the breather and running a fuel filter at the end. Axle can breath in and out then.

Will relocate the breather to a safe place. (One of the things I learned here after buying a Tundra with a blown axle seal.)

 

That's what I did. Made up my own, but got the breathing up and away from the axle.

 

It's just a loose fitting cap on a nipple. I'm pretty sure it allows air to pass both ways to compensate for contraction as well as expansion.

 

Its a One Way Valve. Outtie.

 

Sure, it's a crude one way valve: air moving out raises the loose fitting cap. But with the cap at rest, it doesn't actually seal, it just restricts the inward flow of air.

I remember blow testing mine and she only went one way.

 

Swapped out the rear axle several years ago and checked the breather then. It was still fine, but I relocated it to the gas fill area as it was way easier to spend 10 minutes on that than replace axle seals. Old one was clogged.

My luck is that the seals would leak when I needed the truck the most, so I figure it's cheap insurance.

 

Did the same thing with my bleeders, inquiring minds need to know!

 

I just checked the Dorman vent in my parts bin (will be installed this spring) and it flows freely out, and restricted, but not sealed in. Maybe the Toyota parts seals better?

 

Be careful, pretty sure the threads on the doorman are not correct. Mine did not want to screw in, doorman part number :924262

 

I did a poor man's mod of pulling the little cap off the breather, pulling out the spring and valve, and coming the cap back on. airflow both ways, but no way for dirt and grime to get up in there because of the cap.

my housing is so rusted there isn't really a breather to remove anymore. it's become 1 with the housing.

 

I combined these two on my truck. The Dorman is restricted but not sealed breathing in as @tvpierce stated, then it goes to a fuel filter, then the axle.

 

The reason it is supposed to be a one-way valve is so that when it is hot and immersed in water the rapid contraction won’t suck water into the differential. If you have modified yours in such a way that it breeds both directions and could be submerged you are seriously risking your differential.

 

sure, if I drive through 18" of water. which I never have, and won't until I do a proper diff breather.

the 1 way breather also makes it so that if you drive your hot differential through cold water, it sucks the co0ld water through your axle seals, ruining the seals, and your differential. either way, it's not meant to go through 18" of water.

Where I live, in the spring that’s not too uncommon of a swim for the truck.

 

I wouldn’t call myself a captain by any means...... well I do have multiple customized articles of clothing with “captain mo....” anyways, it was nice the times I’ve taken a boat out, and not have to worry about my axle seals or anything else sucking water in when the rear end kisses or dips in the water. I’d rather not ever drive thru anything that deep, but boat ramps are a different story
