Real world, it's an honest to God 24 mpg. You see, the truck gets 15 mpg for the first 3/4 mile, and makes up the difference when it breaks down and has to be pushed/towed the final 1/4 mile.

Which of the big 3 has this?
They already have fewer choices than the competition.

I feel like out of the Big 3, Ram has the best interior...but it's offset by the fact that it's a Ram. LOL

Whether we like it or not the world is progressing to electric cars at a rapid pace. I think Toyota would be smart and get ahead of the curve with a plug in hybrid version. I need the range and flexibility of a gas engine for camping and hunting, but my 6 mile work commute would do well with a plug in hybrid. Love my v8 first gen, but I wouldn't mind better than 13mpg either...

All moot though cause I'm keeping my 05 forever. Haha.

But can you get that in an SL or whatever it is they call their lowest trim?

I don't know. Search for it. Those are Fords HP rating and the EPA's highway rating.

I heard people were seeing 27 mpg but not confirmed

I guess Toyota is trying to corner the market on non-traditional truck buyers.

Best I've seen hypermiling is high 20's. But also seen typical driving cause low 20's for combined numbers. Seems more like the system is built for the onboard power and not so much for electric motor boost.

Oh you mean the nice trim? Yeah I seriously doubt it. I know what the trim 'looks' like (I looked at an SL and an SLT - I'd say an SLT is probably the closest to an SR5), but my guess is that it's not anywhere near the quality you can get with the upper trim levels.

Yeah, just pointing that out because the discussion was on work trucks, which I'm sure the journalists have no interest in.

I'm sorry, but that's never gonna happen in the next generation unless they introduce a diesel. I'll be floored if the next model does better than 22. It's not necessarily whether the technology is available. It's just a matter of if they decide to use it, if it's cost effective, and if they'll have something left in the tank for future updates. It's like computers, phones and tablets. What they release isn't what they're actually capable of putting into it.

Obviously this is just my opinion, but I watched all this kind of chatter on the mustang forums when the 2018's were coming out. Everyone's talking about one-upping the camaro, etc, but from a performance standpoint all they really all they did was even the race back up. It only made sense to do so, but not take it much further...They already outsell the camaro and challenger 2 to 1 as it is.

I'd love to see the next tundra blow everyone out if the water, but it isn't gonna happen. They'll just catch-up.

i agree 100%! I have an ‘07 DC 2wd and have been waiting on a refresh for years to buy 4WD. Now that it’s approaching and given how the prices keep climbing, I’m looking at alternatives in case I’m not sold on the new one to cough up $60k+. Based on recent model years, I really want the extras that come on a Platinum, but want it in a DC. My kids are grown and don’t need more space for seating than I have. In fact, the DC has always been enough so long as my son who’s 6’-4” sits up front. I like the looks of the CM, but want the hauling space of the 6.5’ bed.

Also, I REALLY want some better colors. If I was building a truck for off-roading, then the Voodoo Blue, Army Green and others can really look bad ass, but I’ve not been a huge fan of the color of the year. I know others like them and I’m glad they get those choices, but I’d like a little more subtle option like the Galactic Aqua Mica on the Celica or another blue or green. Just my two cents. I’d be happy with the Magnetic Grey Metallic, Barcelona Red, or Super White, so I’ve got choices. Just bring it on!

Lots of good ideas here. I particularly like the AWD option, but don’t know how that impacts the true 4WD option. Needs to have that low range capability. Would love a diesel and have followed that dream and read every article and blog on that topic since 2009, but believe Toyota, even with all of their diesel vehicles across the globe, said they weren’t going to bring it to the USA due to tighter regulations that go into effect in 2026. Apparently, too much investment to make their diesel comply and not enough time to recoup the investment. Who knows, though, times and circumstances change, so let’s see what happens.

The big 3 all offer automatic 4x4 with 4Lo (though in GM for 2019+ you have to go to the 6.2 or the off road package to get it).

2022>>>>Lose the moon/sun roof, lose the 20" rims, lose the cheap fake chrome plastic everywhere since it's not really chrome. Real chrome plated bumpers excluded. Radio Shack hi fi would be an improvement. Lose the NAV and buy a f'ing map and compass. Make all nannies optional for those of us who actually watch the road and know how to drive without them. Locker would be good. Decent leaf springs. Live front axle with decent leafs. Dana diffs. A battery that lasts more than 18 months. 5 year subscription to Fur-Fish-Game magazine. My favorite.

    1. Lose at least 300 lbs.
    2. Keep 4.6 V8 and optional 3.0 straight six turbodiesel.
    3. Better aerodynamics and lower hood and belt line.
    4. 8 speed auto.
    5. Make the crewmax cab 6 inches shorter and add 6 inches to the bed (6 ft. bed like original Double Cab).

Mind as well ask for a couple thousand off the price, too...

    I didn't say it wasn't possible. I'm saying I believe Toyota won't do it.

If I'm calling out a guess right now, the new engine will make 412hp and get an advertised 22mpg hwy.

    Someone screenshot this..lol

From most leaks they say it will be the same engine as the Lexus LS which is rated at 416HP\442lb-ft Torque.....So your probably in line with 412HP in the area, because I'm sure the engine will be tweaked\tuned differently for the Tundra. I believe the 3.5L TT will be the standard engine across the board, likely with a hybrid powertrain option (most of the recent Toyota models have a the hybrid option or are completely hybrid)

I honestly think the only options I would like to see is the 360 camera, heated steering wheel, and heated rear seats. Other than that my current 2019 1794 has mostly everything needed. I also purchased a 2021 Venza for my wife and the JBL system in that is pretty decent. Would like to see that brought over to the tundra. Things to keep in mind is the more features\options added the price goes up along with the chance of things to go wrong reliability wise. I love the V8, but wouldn't mind better gas mileage even it if comes from a TT or hybrid.

There is a lot of wishful thinking (with regards to fuel efficiency) in this thread.

Ok my prediction on the power train someone probably already said this from above but I think its going to the v6 twin turbo that lexus has 416hp and 450lb torque to the front wheels and the hybrid powering the rear wheels from the rav4 with 53hp and extra 90lb torque or it could be a bigger than that. so an all wheel drive system with 10 speed automatic used in the LS500... Output numbers 470hp and 540lb of torque that sounds pretty reasonable my guess is that the new tundra won't be as bulky looking at the camouflage picture the body seems more sleeker and aerodynamic compared to our brick houses.. coefficient drag will be definitely better on this new tundra which mpg will skyrocket upwards in the high 20s. You guys have to understand their could be a bigger battery pack or maybe dual motors for the rear axle so those power numbers are being underrated untill we hear the final numbers.. now I say this to the rear because remember like 2 years ago when they took pictures out in the open they had the odd looking rear passenger wheel. Look like electric motor to be honest...

They said a world beater and best in class.. when toyota comes out with something new they blow it out of the park and beats everybody untill the competition comes up and toyota will take another 15 years to redesign... I think anything higher than 470hp is most definitely possible, it could be as much as 550hp with 630lb of torque with a awd system with dual motors in the rear. The only other option for a v8 is the gsf in the Lexus making 467hp different cam profiles to have more torque and lower torque band could be making 450hp on a n/a

you have to understand something fuel efficient for the next gen is going to be in the high 20s probably around 27mpg for the hybrid system.. it's not going to have the big 5.7 engine anymore with low 4.30 gear ratio.. right now electric vehicles are swarming into the market literally destroying everyone in terms of power and efficiency.. so Toyota doing a hybrid system with ttv6 is very smart and it's not wishful thinking I'm just stating the facts if toyota wants to be in best in class it's going to be better than ford 430hp and 24mpg which can be done easily by toyota...

I seriously can’t understand folks reluctance to embrace TT V6 compared to NA V8, even more mind blowing is the reluctance to embrace hybrid tech.

TT-V6 produce WAY more torque at lower RPM, and across a much broader band than NA V8’s. They also produce more HP, and with better fuel efficiency. Toyota has proved their smaller displacement FI engines to be the most reliable on the market, and just as reliable as their NA engines.

Then hybrids / PHEV / EV motors produce max torque instantly, and surpass combustion engines in basically every single metric. The gap is only going to get wider as technology and the economy of scale accelerate development.

A plug in hybrid TTV6 is exactly what I want as it will eliminate the range limitation with current battery technology. If the new Tundra has this, I’ll be first in line to trade in my 2018.
