    Lots of shenanigans.
Hey guys, when changing the oil on my Tundra I stripped the screws on the oil filter access panel. I somehow got one out but the other 3 are stuck in there. I tossed in the towel after I purchased an extractor set (link below) but it couldn't get it out. Any advice on how to get the screws out? I tried wrapping the 5mm allen socket with a glove and couldn't get it out. If all else fails, I'll just put oil in it and drive it to a shop to remove the bolts for me. (Would prefer that as a last resort though)

Remove the skid plate entirely, it’s not very hard. Then you can proceed with your oil change as needed and fix the access hatch at your leisure in your shop.

Can you pull it off and see if you have any thread protrusion where you can put vise grips on them?

Its not the bolts. Its the recessed allen head screws on the filter door that he has stuck.

I was gonna try vice grips tomorrow, what're y'alls thoughts on hammering it with a star bit set and then trying to extract it out that way?

    All of the above.

I have yet to see or use a screw extractor that actually works. The only thing that ever does is vise grips or pliers gripping an end and manually turning it out.

Screw extractors have always been gimmicky to me.

I don't think that I can get the bolts off with a vice grip but I can try tomorrow. I'd also prefer not to take off the entire skid plate but if it comes down to that then I will.

If you were local to the Clearwater/St Pete area we would get them out. Stuck screws are common in aircraft maintenance. Pull the skid plate off and see If you have a machine shop near you.... they would have them out in no time.

Do you strip all three or are they just seized? :notsure:

Show us a pic of your bolt heads, so we can see how damaged they are.

I wish bud, I'm at FWB/ Pensacola area. I think I might do that tomorrow. My only worry is that I don't have a breaker bar but I can jimmy rig something together to get it out.

So they were already stripped (I think from the previous owner) and I only made it worse.

    Ahhhh, that makes more sense.

I was hoping you didn't strip 3 of 4 bolts that were probably just seized

Hope you get it off successfully.

From my experience, most silver/chrome allen head screws are a softer material and strip easier. The black ones seem to be a litter better.

Yup, they're the silver ones, unfortunately :(
I don't know how I start a simple oil change and manage to turn it into a 2-day process. I've worked on my own cars my entire life and this is by far the most work that I have spent on an oil change.

For replacement I would get washers and hex head bolt that is a little longer and use that instead of recessed screws.

I am having issues trying to download the instructions but what I did find so far is that it appears to be an M6 size screw.

I have used mine a handful of times and I'm surprised it has worked. Usually I need a fast drill for it to work.

Yeah, I dont know if I am just doing it wrong or what but the one screw that I got off required a decent amount of effort to get it off. Idk if it is always like that or if dirt got into it.
