2022 Tundra

Very True, the test mule has been spotted all the way back in 2019. Odds are it is in its final tweaking status. The only thing that will be affected is the number of 2021 models at this point.

 

I just found this article I hadn’t thought about a tundra plug-in hybrid. This would be cool.
If you’ve got to run some errands less than 20 or 30 miles you can do it straight on electric. Flip a switch and you’re running like a traditional hybrid combination of gas and electricity with all the torque and horsepower the combination provides. It depends on how they configure it but that is a possibility.

You and me both! I've been searching for "Toyota Tundra News" and "Toyota Tundra Refresh" for years, but for the last 5 months it's been a daily Google search for "2022 Toyota Tundra". I'm dying for more info. Have been driving my '07 SR5 DC 2wd since it was new and am desperate for 4wd and would love some new technology/goodies too. I read somewhere else that you should be able to order 2021 MY trucks into this summer, but read here that that isn't so. I don't really know but if Toyota is still producing and/or has much inventory, I don't think they're going to shoot themselves (or the dealers) in the foot by showing us "here's what you can buy in late 2021 if you'll wait and not buy that Tundra that's available today." It's a balancing act of promoting their current MY and selling inventory without sacrificing huge dealer incentives and introducing the new truck at one of the major car shows. When that day finally comes, they could still just drop some pics of the new truck w/o revealing all the specs until they are about to ship to dealers. Just keep stringing us along ...

 

That’s the idea I brought up weeks ago and it sparked some “electric doesn’t belong in trucks” debate. While I agree to an extent, because the battery pack would need to be enormous to get sufficient range for “truck things”. The little kid in me is thinking “sweet, I can mall crawl to work on 37’s without using any gas!”.

Been driving my sisters Prius Prime though. Short drives around town this thing is useful. I’ve gone 150+ miles without using a drop of gas.

 

The dealer I go to had all of the cats cut off all the tundras on the lot, they cant sell one even if you threw cash at them. They are having a hard time getting in the part to repair as well.

 

seconded... by definition, a hybrid is a mix of two technologies. What's the diff between a full and partial hybrid?

I think a lot of people would be thrilled with option 1, but 90% of the rumor mill seems to stand firm that the next gen truck will not have a gas only option.

 

I think he means the difference between a small electric helper motor vs. a system that will allow you to run entirely on electric power alone at times.

 

Interesting... I can't really see any incentive for Toyota to release a truck with a small helper motor, unless it is a "patch" to fill a hole in the market temporarily. With how long it has been since Toyota did a full update on these trucks, I think that will be seen as too little, too late.

I would love a plug in hybrid Tundra. Maybe around a 50 mile range on batteries. That would get me back and forth from work each day. Still have the long range ability with the gas motor. I'm not ready for a full on electric truck, but 50 mile range on batteries would cover probably 75% of my driving and save me a ton on gas. One thing I have always wondered about though is I may have a tank of gas sitting in the tank for months. That and the engine only being ran once a week or so possibly. I also don't like having an engine that doesn't get ran much. I've always found the more a car sits, the more problems they develop.

 

I keep thinking if there's anything that would make me jump ship on my 21. A plug-in hybrid with 50-mi range might do it. All of my trips are <30 mi, except when we visit family or go camping.

While I'm dreaming, I'd love to see
• a turbo added to the 5.7L,
• 8-speed trans,
• standard rear locker,
• front locker available on TRD Pro and Off Road,
• increased payload (obviously),
• include previously deleted items (trans cooler, driver's grab handle)

 

If you think the Tundra is heavy now, wait till you're carrying around enough battery to push it 50 miles. Hybrid is not a bad idea since the battery acts like a glorified capacitor and smooths out the power demand, but a 50-mile range is asking for almost EV performance. I'll take a twin turbo over an EV any day.

 

Good point. I wonder if going aluminum on the all or most of the body, back to a slightly smaller fuel tank, and a lighter ICE than the 5.7 would make it work.

The rumors I've heard say the lower trims will get a 3.5L V6 TT gas only and the upper trims will get hybrid. But folks are claiming the V8 is gone.

 

As long as they can do it without all the creaks and leaks that Ford and GM are dealing with.

 

The weight of the Tundra can be reduced quite a bit. F150's are 1000 lbs less than the Tundras. Add the weight of the battery pack back in and you are back at the weight of the current Tundra which gives it the stability for towing etc.

 

And that weight is going to be at the lowest point on the frame so won't hurt handling much. I'd personally still like steel quarter panels since they get the most dents, so even a few hundred pounds more put a larger battery (Ford's is around 500 lbs) on it and you're still only 5900 lbs curb weight, so they still have 2600 lbs of possible payload and still be classified as a 1/2 ton class 2a (GVWR of 8500 lbs or below).

 

ah... I should have said that there won't be a *real* gas only option.

So why dont these folks have a genset and 10G of gas sitting around, instead of trading their trucks in and losing a bunch of $. Thats less than $1k for peace of mind.

I do really like that option though. And would sway me to another Ford.

 

I think many of us, along the Texas Gulf Coast do have generators with, much more than 10 gallons of fuel. Still, the outlet in the bed is a nice feature that would be cool as standard on a Tundra. But it is an inexpensive and relatively easy mod to add to an already kick ass truck.

 

I think the thing that I find the most frustrating about this, is that my 2012 FJ Cruiser had one of these in the back, my wifes 2013 Tacoma has an outlet in the back, I really don't understand why the Tacoma gets all of this tech way before the Tundra.

 

I am sure many do, but I guess those prepared people dont really make the news. Wasnt trying to take a shot at people already down on their luck, just felt like it was a advertisment for Ford when there are other more economical choices.

I do think how Ford implemented it is a game changer. My family lives in Dallas and their neighbors were using their Teslas in “camping mode”. But once the batteries are close to depleted they shut down and then you are really screwed with no power and no transportation.
