What do you want in 2022 Tundra.

The 2022 thread is really getting broad. I'd like to know what do you want, don't want in your next Tundra. Not the obvious like 4WD, etc., New Stuff. I'll start.

1. Plug in Hybrid I'm going to buy a truck this year. If the tundra doesn't have a Hybrid I'll probably go with the F150.
2. Better Gas mileage 13 in town is killing me. I think we will have $4.00 gas by next year.
3. On board electric power. I'd really like something like Ford's Powerboost, 7-10 KW. I live in Florida and would like to have the truck take some of the load off my generator. I don't have Natural Gas so I have to store 30 gallons of gas in the garage when we get a hurricane warning. Plus I'm going to tow a 5th wheel and would like the extra power.
4. More towing capacity.
5. Lane Assist, Braking Assist, and related tech.
6. Larger LCD Screen.
7. More Toys i.e. cameras, lights, etc.
8. A drivers side Grab Handle. My 2007 doesn't have one.
9. Double Cab 6.5 Ft. Bed With Hybrid
10. Better tailgate to make getting in easier and to help carrying long boards, plywood, etc. That is if I can ever afford to buy wood again.
11. Transmission Cooler
12. Remote Start via Cell Phone
13. All LED's

Don't Want and won't buy:
1. Moon Roof. I have one on my 2007 Lexus and I don't think I've used it since 2007. I plan on towing a 5th wheel and plan to stay in national parks one falling limb and you have a convertible.

Again, it's a thread of what you want and what you don't want.

 

I just want it to come out in 2022...that’s about it at this point.

 

All I really want are some pictures and details. The only thing that would get me to buy one , with in a year or two, is off the charts milage. 18-20 towing a boat. I drove 30,000 miles last year and I averaged 11.7 mpg. Probably 10 towing.

 

If you're getting a 5th wheel get an HD. 5th wheels are all pushing the limits on half tons. Hybrid F150 has ~2000 lb payload, 5th wheels require 15-20% tongue weight so a 10k lb 5th wheel eats up all of that payload. If you get an HD from before 2013 you can still get a very reliable drivetrain and decent fuel mileage. It won't have all the gimmicks so if those are more important than the new ones have tons of power and gimmicks just with all the emission stuff which means poorer fuel efficiency.

 

Larger Engine with more HP and TQ
More towing capacity
more cargo capacity

If this can be achieved by Toyota, then they would be in the ball game of the rest of the 1/2 ton manufactures.

 

I’m looking at a 28 foot 8000 pound fifth wheel 1200 pound tongue weight

 

At this point if Toyota can best everyone in MPG by a decent margin while not hurting reliability and quality, then that alone is a winner for the new standards. An updated infotainment will be there too, just look at all the recent 'yota releases.
I don't think the 22 Tundra will have the next big thing in battery tech, but it could get it in a refresh.

 

I think Toyota has the advantage in hybrid technology. I don’t know for sure but they put out the most hybrid cars And have been doing it longer than anybody else. My wife just traded in her 2006 Lexus RX 400H and I have a 2007. Very dependable and they’ve been around a long time

 

By your own rules, 2, 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8 aren't new stuff

 

Assuming that's the GVWR of the trailer I still say, and always have on here, that is HD territory. A lot of us have likely towed that much with our Tundras, but I will always recommend against it. I did it in a move from one house to another, a 1 time shot. Towing time after time that is 100% in HD range purely for safety. Can a half ton do it, absolutely, but if 1 time you get caught in shitty weather you will want a 7000 lb HD truck. Half tons now are grocery getters, they aren't working trucks.

 

Well, I've been hearing a lot about a Twin Turbo engine in the next Tundra, and quite honestly, I could get pretty excited about that. I mean, who wouldn't want a TT 5.7 V8 in their Tundra?

 

V8 option and attractive body style.

 

I love how hopeful everyone is about a V8 option

 

A V8, don't care about MPG or emissions I just want grunt since it's beginning to fade away.

If you want a hybrid please buy a Ford. Don't Ford the Tundra.

 

I'd love to see a 5.0 V8 that makes as much power as our 5.7 and its the base engine. They can offer a Hybrid or TTV6 or whatever after that.

But most of all, simplicity. The more bells and whistles that get added, the more things there are that can go wrong. Plus it drives the cost up.

 

Bring back the RCSB and RCLB! I'll need another truck in a few years and I only buy used.

 

Turbo and hybrid options and better electronics...!

 

-Off road package comparable to the Tacoma trd off road with a locker.

-50-75 more hp with an n/a V8.

-optional TRD blower.

-more payload and towing.

-TRD sport in limited trim like Canada gets.

 

just produce a diesel in their trucks like they sell around the rest of the world. Even better a diesel hybrid that actually knew what the word gas mileage was. Don't think will ever see it in the US, but can always wish, lol.

Seriously, I honestly don't care WHAT engine they come out with, truthfully. More MPG would be nice, but I already knew MPG would (supposedly) be crap when I bought my Tundra. I say 'supposedly' because the while it's worse around town than my F150 used to be (maybe 14.5 vs. 15.3 MPG), it's easily better on the road.

But with that said....more payload and towing, maybe a TT option, and that whole "PowerBoost" thing (plug-ins in the back).

 

I've been waiting for an actual "NEW" Tundra since 2014 ( which never came) and up until a couple years ago I wouldn't even consider a Hybrid.

Now it is first on my list and not only a Hybrid, it needs to be a plug-in with at least 30-50 miles of electric only range. Fuel is going to be $4 again soon so I don't want to have to burn it unless I am actually going somewhere or towing something.

If Toyota doesn't have a plug-in I may give that new cybertruck with a 500 mile range a try. I am not totally sold on all EV but 1/3 the fuel cost is a tidy sum to save ( maybe more if I can add a solar charging station)

I'm not a fan Fords post 1970 so a Hybrid F150 is off the table.

 

I would like to the tundra to do a couple of things.

1. Keep the 5.7L as an option and mate it to an 8spd
2. Put lockers in the truck
3. Max towing of 14K (13K for 4x4 SR5 model)
4. Lowest Payload should be 1750
5. Offer a V6 TT and a V6 Hybrid
6. Offer a 6.5ft bed on a crewmax
7. Put storage under the rear seat in the Crewmax

I am sure I a missing a few things

 

I just saw this yesterday. Think of the advantages if it is true. If I just have to run some errands push a button and you can run on just electricity for XX number of miles. I'm hoping for at least 25-30. Then if you have to pull a trailer, haul a load or take a longer trip, push a button and your are running on hybrid with the greater torque and horsepower that the combination of Gas and Electricity provide.

I don't know this for sure it's just rumors at this point but this would be cool.
Toyota did announce that the new tundra was going to set the standard... Then over super bowl weekend they announced two new Electric Vehicles and there will be a new plug in hybrid. Could the Tundra be the new Plug In Hybrid?

Let me add another one to my Want list.
9. Double Cab with the Hybrid and 6.5 bed. I have a double cab 6.5 now and like it better than the crewmax with the 5 foot bed.

 

Toyota and Ford worked together on the hybrid truck tech so it's a good bet the Tundra will atleast have a hybrid option if not hybrid exclusively. Don't discount it cuz it will be a good thing and be very reliable. The Prius is probably the most reliable vehicle Toyota makes. Hybrid is a good thing if done right.

Well, I will never own a 2022, dont buy first year models and I am sure cost will exceed my budget. But I want the following in the next Tundra-

Extreme reliability
More payload
better MPG
Better headlights for all trims
Improved stereo. There is no reason factory stereos are not better with the tech available. Even a low cost aftermarket unit is leaps ahead of current stock units.
for it to have a decent ride height, not super low like Chevy/Dodge. Parked next to a new ram a few days ago and the body and side steps were easily 3+ inches lower than my stock 2016. I want a truck to sit up a little bit.
