Thanks man! She has her quirks (not unexpected for a 30+ year old camper), but we get along just fine.

I’m running Eibach springs with their pro struts. In the rear, I have bags and a 1inch block (for now).

 

Not sure what ill use it for just yet, but for 100$ I couldn't pass it up.

 

I dry camp exclusively -- meaning no power hookups. With my 200 watt system, I generate more power than I consume, so that means no need for a generator.

 

What all do you have that consumes?

 

What size battery bank do you have?

 

Very little... by design.
- charge 2 phones and an iPad.
- refrigerator/freezer runs on propane, but it needs 12 volts for the electronics to regulate it (only draws about 1/10th of an amp).
- lights (all converted to LED, and used very sparingly)
- water pump (to flush the toilet and take showers. All cooking is done outside, camp-style)
- occasionally run a fan through the night if it's excessively hot (about 1 amp)

Just a single deep cycle 12volt battery because my demand is so modest.

Most times I could probably get by with only 100 watts of solar, but that would leave very little room for variations in use and weather conditions.

 

Do any of you guys have any recommendations for some sort of low voltage shutoff device? amperage unknown at this time, 40 amps would be my guess.

 

I haven’t used any of the products but
Redarc seems to be popular as a low voltage isolator. Not sure if they make a product specific to what you’re using it for.

I have seen people use a relay for a Low voltage shutoff. You need to test the relay to see when the relay will open due to too low a voltage.
So a 12VDC relay might drop out at 6V. A 24vdc relay might drop out at 12v. You may need to cascade two relays because the bigger the coil the closer to it rated voltage you need to get to turn it on.

 

Me too. Many want to reinvent the wheel with new terminology, but to me it s always been Off Roading, and always will be. I can t show pics cause I m still trying to find a way to disable the passenger airbags, (or fool system into thinking everything is normal), so I can remove seat, and build a cot in that spot.

 

It’s been a while, but if you get a decent Mppt charge controller it should have an adjustable low voltage cut off.

Pretty sure he’s in the FB group. If it’s the one I’m thinking of, I’ve seen a walk around of the shell and it’s all custom made.

 

That’s probably why I couldn’t find anyone that makes one for 1st gens. GFC are nice, but about 25% more than I paid for the truck

I absolutely hate Tepui style roof top tents. Owned one, will never again. Such a hassle. But I am thinking cab high tent of some type on some bed bars would be a good setup.

I have yet to visit a desert. Is that a giant speaker over on the left side of the picture?

 

Let me tell you, you are missing out. Desert becomes a way of life and a state of mind. This specific spot is just above an hour from my house (which isn't considered far here). And yes, that is a giant speaker that CRANKS, Costco special. It doubles as the stereo in the truck. I built a little compartment where it sits on my fridge shelf. Much better investment than buying a new HU/ Amp that does me no good when I'm floating in the middle of the river.
