Show me your truck camping setup!

I tried a latex topper and it was like dragging a dead body around. I may end up with memory foam but it tends to sleep hot. I and kind of thinking that maybe some general purpose couch foam may do the trick. I need to figure out density but I would think it would be dirt cheap.

I always go with a tarp and hang the hammock under that. For the bugs I have a light weight bug net that goes around the hammock. There is a guy a youtube I think he goes by Shug and he has some pretty good videos on the subject if you are interested.

 

Spot on asessment for both latex and memory foam! I have chunks of both laying around from testing them on my bed. Not a fan of either, especially memory foam which is the worst sleeping surface I've ever tried and don't understand it's popularity. Might still try them both out for a single canopy mattress, before spending more money on yet another sleep surface.

The trifold mattress to me is more like the couch foam you mentioned. It's a little firmer then I would like, but not very heavy and the fold feature is very handy for staying out of the way and storage.

 

Yeah I really like the idea of it folding up. In my old setup wrestling the mattress out and putting it away was the worst part.

 

The tri fold still takes up some space, but not bad considering it's 4" thick and a double size. This is one reason I'll be going with a single one for solo trips. I'll try some cheap/free options first, but I expect to buy another tri fold eventually.

 

You guys may already know about this, but Exped and Exped Megamat AirB&B mattresses are bomb! They self-inflate or can be inflated with an included fabric air pump. Roll small enough to store in any of these under-platform storage areas. It’s cool to be able to put it out of the way between uses.

Pricey but worth it if, like me, you can no longer sleep anywhere well, and require a little comfort.

 

I have a sea to summit comfort deluxe self inflating mattress that I believe is very similar to the one you are referring to. It's a double size, unfortunately it's a touch too long for back of my truck. It was also pretty spendy ($300+). So we just use it for tent camping, which it does very well at. Not easy to pack up though... So wouldn't want to have to set it up and take down every day.

 

Yeah I know what you mean. I have friends with both so was lucky enough to get to check out both before I bought. The Exped wins hands down IMO for comfort (2nd night is always better than first...), ease of set up and put-away, and size... except maybe not sized right in this case. I’m really tall, so I love that it’s long, but I guess not everyone would appreciate this.

Just bought the Exped 10 long and wide megamat for my RTT. Took out the mattress and threw it in there. I primarily sleep by myself so this is working out to be a lot better than having a wall to wall mattress up there. Now I can store things in the tent and this mattress is so comfortable. As you mentioned it was not cheap but has been completely worth it for me. They also make a 6" megamat now which was too thick for my application but would be great in a topper camp setup.

Finally found some of the 04'. Wish I would have taken more. The first is the quick, " I need to build this for an MTB trip tomorrow. The second one I ended up making full width. The awning was my favorite. I didn't need it 90% of the time, but since I bought it, might as well use it. I actually ended up using it more for baseball games than camping.

 

I searched through their site. It is available for 1st gen. I didn't see it the first time.

Yeah, I didn't see the bed options. I kept it on 5.5' (oops) then tried 6.5', I think the 6'3" was the third bed option , then it pops up as available.

I think I'll hit them up next week for a shop visit (I'm not in the market) and see what they have. Maybe do a little tire kicking and option shopping for forum info in case anyone one is looking for their 2nd or 3rd gen.

 

Sounds cool! I also have a 3rd Gen, so I’ll keep tabs. Good luck checking it out in person and staying ‘not in the market’.

Easy setup and take down.. as long as the weather agrees

 

One of the Boy Scout dads I know does this + an EZ Up canopy which he uses over the bed when the weather doesn’t agree. Still minimalist. Sometimes I’m envious.

 

Yeah I have one on standby just in case, I spend a lot of time camping in Northern Arizona so usually pretty clear weather wise.

 

I bet. Did you have any mechanical issues along the way?

 

Very fortunate that a flat tire, and a torsion bar support broken that we had a new bolt welded, were the only thing that happened. We started with 100000 miles on the truck drove about 60k in two years. Replace tires around 40k and still have the truck as a daily driver.

How bad did all that drag on the roof hurt MPG?

 

The rack was custom made by a friend, we designed it very specifically for the load. If you want I could load some detail pictures on the album.
As for MPG yes it hurt but...
