Original Battery Life - Gen 3 Tundra

Lots of factors affect brakes. State is a big one. In WV brakes have a much shorter life then Texas. Depending on part of the state less then half. Trailer towing is another big factor. Also driver. I got 3x the miles out of brakes as ex but more highway. I use to tell her she needed to be a Nascar driver. Foot was always on one pedal or the other.

 

Woke up this morning to the dreaded click-click-click. Time for a new battery in my Tundra I bought new in March of 2016. It has about 24K miles on it.

 

Wife’s Honda CRV lasted 3 years and 22k miles. Horse shit from the factory

 

All my previous vehicles have been Mopar and it was nothing to get 10+ years out of the OEM maintenance free batteries. It's down right silly that Toyota is still putting this crap in their cars.

 

Not just Toyota. I had a Motorcraft die at 9 months. Fortunately I had boat with me and 2 fully charged marine batteries. Only problem it was the ugly ass 1987 F150 with the sloping hood and had a low profile battery. I had to protect the + post and drive home with hood partially closed. Dealers closed so I had to buy a new one out of pocket. Tundra died with no warning at a little less then 2 years. At least my Tacomas made it 3 and gave me a couple of slow crank warnings.

 

bought in dec-2017.

replaced 1st oem battery in feb-2019 under warranty (see thread https://www.tundras.com/threads/2018-tundra-battery-question.39270/#post-997911)

replaced 2nd oem battery feb-2021, replaced with interstate 30m full replacement warranty battery. didnt have time to waste with trying to get a warranty replacement again. truck wouldnt start twice during our cold snap 2 days in a row.

now granted our cold snap lasted about 3 weeks with 2 weeks at roughly -20F avg.

 

Mine lasted about 20 months. I have a Full Throttle 35 AGM on the way. Should solve the problem.

 

My 2016 OEM is dying. It was on it's way out a few months ago and died on me once, but then it sat for 3 weeks and died. Even after jumping it, it died again after a short drive. I have it on a trickle charger now, but I'm still swapping it out for an Interstate ASAP.

I thought about draining it, "repairing" it, and adding new acid etc. But it's just not worth my time.

 

Have 26 months on mine and going strong. I will say that after reading this thread before we left for Colorado last week, I was 100% positive we’d come back go a dead battery at the airport with the cold as so here in texas!

 

My dad just got a 2021 T4R Limited. Has 200 miles on it. Got a ride on a flatbed to the dealer due to a bad battery. Currently at the dealer still to determine if it's indeed a bad battery or if an electrical issue on it.

 

Whoa!...4Runners are made in Japan too! Battery manufacture is pretty weird these days, but I have to believe 4Runner batteries are sourced from somewhere in Asia without the environmental constraints of the US. Maybe cheap crap batteries has become a Toyota policy.

 

Wow. That would certainly be irritating. Hopefully it's just a dud battery and not a bigger issue.

My 2001 Tundra, which I bought in 2004, had it's original battery last for just a touch under 8 years. I sold the truck in the beginning of 2020 and it was only on it's 3rd battery. Batteries seem to be so hit or miss, I just always bring my little jump pack with me now. It's a life saver.

 

Yeah it sounds like batteries are becoming more and more an issue. Tacoma's were known to have their batteries crap out after just a couple years.

They were able to get his T4R's battery to hold a charge from overnight last night. They're keeping it over the weekend to see how it does. They did deliver a Rav4 to his house though as a loaner which was nice.

 

I’m torn now... had the battery checked out and recommended not to replace, but reading these stories has me considering otherwise before a multi-state road trip w/ travel trailer.

 

I carry a portable battery jumper from Weego on road trips. You Can use it to charge phones and laptops but it will also jump a tundra too. I’ve used it to jump my boat and my tractor too.

Peace of mind is worth it, but it’s relatively cheap ($150ish) and you can get them on sale periodically.

 

This past fall my 2014's original battery passed away. I knew it was on its way out but forgot to tell the dealership when it was stuck in jail for the fuel pump recall. When it was finally done they told me they had to jump it to get it in the shop.

I got the same battery again. Hopefully I'll get another 6 years out of it. Seems doubtful and I just got lucky.

 

If that's the original battery on a 2017, then you've done really well. You are well past the typical 24 month failure from "lack of conductivity" (dead cell). It might be worth taking a chance if you've gotten this far. Who tested the battery and recommended no replacement, the dealer?

If your travel trailer has a 12V battery, investigate the TT battery specs and the possibility of it fitting in the Tundra. You may be able use your TT battery in your Tundra if the OEM battery takes a dead cell dump. Just be sure the TT battery can be secured in position by some means (watch the height). It may take a little Apollo 14 improvisation to get your rig from campsite to the next city.

The problem with expecting to use a jumper box or another battery to start the truck in an emergency is that jump starts are not possible if the battery has a dead cell. A battery with a dead cell will not accept charge from another battery or charger.

 

4 years and 5 months and my Mama Toyota original is still going. I do practice good battery management.

2010 Tundra battery lasted 7 years or so.
I work with batteries for a living, for the last 34 years. Not car batteries, but telecom batteries. 750lbs per cell, 2.19volts, 4,000 amps. String 24 of them together in series to get a nominal 48 volts (52.80 volts actual). Heat does destroy a battery. The best temp to keep a battery at is 77°~80°. For every 3° above that (average), you can knock time off the lifespan of your battery. Batteries only have so many deep discharge (or "cranks") in them, no matter who builds them. The 4,000 ah batts we use have a 50 deep cycle lifespan, we have round cells weighing 350lbs that have a 300 cycle lifespan. AGM's are much worse at handling heat than a wet cell. They swell, crack, and sometimes go into cell reversal, which compounds the problem and then heat up even more. We've had them melt together and had to take a crowbar and hammer to break them back apart.

 

I have a 2014 with 83k miles.
Just replaced the original battery.

 

My 2016 crewmax still has original battery.

 

You work for a phone company? I delivered and sat many of those batteries in the for ATT and Verizon in NH.

 

I am a contractor that does DC power plant work for phone companies.

 

What year is the CR-V? The factory one in my wife’s 2015 was absolutely horrible. We had all kinds of weird gremlins due to it.
