Hello all! New member here looking to learn from those with more experience and avoid having to buy twice.

I have a 2018 crewmax that will be used for off-roading and glamping (now known as overlanding).

I’ve already installed a Genesis dual battery system and some other minor things. I’m looking to upgrade the suspension, wheels, and tires. Right now it has factory 20” rims, sway bars, and bilstein shocks.

Here are the parts I’m considering and the reasoning behind it. Please let me know if you have experience with them, other suggestions, or concerns with my choices.

    • Icon stage 9 lift kit
      • I’ll have a truck cap, decked system, and roof top tent in the rear so it’s a lot of weight. The stage 9 comes with the RXT leaf pack to handle that added bulk. I don’t think the lower stage kits come with the RXT and add a leaf included. I’ve also read that you can get the kit with 700lb springs instead of the 600lb ones that normally come with it. I’m thinking that’ll be helpful with the aftermarket bumper, winch, and extra battery weight up front. Also, planning to spend the extra money on the billet UCAs for the additional adjustment.
      • I was considering the OME BP-51 kit instead, but have seen some review issues with leaky rear shocks. Also, I would likely need to upgrade the leaf springs that come with the BP-51 kit anyway. It is significantly cheaper than the icon kit though.
    • Method 703 rims 17” with +35 offset
      • I’m thinking the +35 offset will help avoid rubbing. They do offer those rims in 0 offset as well. I would love to avoid a CMC, but I don’t know if that’ll be possible with 35” tires. If I need to, I’ll have it done.
    • Toyo Open Country A/T IIIs in 35”
      • We get a good bit of snow here and I’ve read great things about these over KO2s and others.
    • CBI front bumper
      • I’ll be mounting a winch. Plus, this will also help to avoid rubbing.
Let me know if I missed any important details and thanks in advance for the feedback.

I am in the middle of a build as well, and this lines up well with what am aiming for but less rear weight. Still trying to figure that out.

Two questions from a pretty ignorant owner:
    - Any reason for 17s vs 18s? I've heard 17s barely clear.
    - Is an extra 100 pounds for the front springs enough to manage the extra weight up front?

Awesome and good questions. I’m definitely not the most informed, but I’ll answer from my perspective.

    1. I didn’t see any of the Method trail series rims in 18”. Plus, 17” gives you a bit more sidewall. I haven’t looked too much into other rim brands, but can get a good deal on Methods. I know SCS is another one forum members like, but they’re usually out of stock.
    2. I’m not sure, but hoping to get those kind of questions and answers here. I don’t know the stock spring weight on a Tundra so maybe the normal 600lb springs that come with the Icon kit are already beefed up? And then the 700lb ones are even that much more than stock? In the thread I found about going from 600 to 700lb springs with the Icon kit, they mentioned the Icon rep thinking 600lb would be enough with an aftermarket bumper and winch. The OP opted for the 700lb springs anyway and was happy.

Aired down 17 gives you more footprint if the outside diameter is the same. Plus more cushion for the rims to absorb impact. Leave it to Toyota to screw up a good truck by offering 20” rims, just dumb! Then the buyers are complaining about harsh ride and asking why, hmm maybe just maybe it has something to do with low profile tires!

I have seen Icon shocks leak as well so if you really want OME, get OME.
17" vs 18" in 35. You only gain 5% more sidewall at most but you are very close to the calipers and if the guy mounting your tire doesn't know any better you might run into some issues.
+18 or +25 offset is the sweet spot for our MT trucks imo.
good choice on the AT3s. Falken at3/w and KO2 good too
    C4 makes good products too.

@TheBeast - I feel like the OMEs give you a lot for the money, but these leaks are the things I worry about: https://www.tundras.com/threads/old-man-emu-bp51-test-trials.60237/

On the offset topic, I know the SCS rims I was looking at were +25. What is the downside to more offset like +35 on the Methods?

@SteelRedOne - Good info. I’m still having trouble tracking down the stock spring weight. I’ve seen everything from 475-650 depending on generation and trim. So I don’t know if 600lbs is an upgrade or similar to stock.

I read somewhere the stock springs are 600lbs. I have icon 2.5” remote res coilovers with 600 lb springs and a fab fours bumper with winch and haven’t had any issues. If I did it again I’d probably do the 700 lb springs though.

Edit: first post I found says 550 lbs.

@SteelRedOne - check this video out around 0:50. Same guy as in the one you posted, but here he says they’re running a 700lb spring because it’s so light in the front  Either way, I think I’ll go with the 700lb spring if Icon offers it.

Hahahah. Maybe we need to call this guy and get it settled once and for all. To be honest, I think I am leaning toward the 700lb spring right now.

Did you ever end up going with these Method 703 rims 17” with +35 offset?

I’m interested in the same ones just seeing if they worked for you.

I ended up going with Method 316 18” +18 offset. I’m waiting on my CBI front bumper so I haven’t put them on yet though.
