Tundra Platinum reliability?

Hey. I currently am leasing a 4runner. About this time next year i will be hopefully looking to buy a Tundra.

My question goes to the Tundra Platinum trim level owners. I know overall these trucks are reliable, but what about your trucks? Do these fully optioned trucks have more issues because of the extra electronics or are they just as reliable as any other trim level?

Mine is a 17’. No issues so far.

JBL sounded like crap but it's not just the Platinums.

 

14 no issues.... everything works as intended

 

2018: No problems and love the trim. One criticism, however, is that the "cooled" seats don't really cool well at all and everybody seems to agree. The seat heaters, however are great!

 

My 2020 is too new to tell but I'd chat with shapinoweno to see how long he's had his, if it's been 7 years he's got some great insight.

 

Honestly, there really aren't enough "added gizmos" to cause reliability problems. Just get the trim you want and you'll be good. I picked the Platinum for the color (wasn't available in other trims), cooled seats (as mentioned, they are actually pretty lame), memory seating positions, and power telescoping wheel.

 

2018 with 25k on the odometer and not a single issue

 

On my 2nd Platinum, not a single problem that was not self induced. I’m happy that the seats have ventilation but they are not cooled. They should state the seats blow a mild breeze in your ass crack.

 

About this time next year you're probably either looking at the redesigned 2022 or going used for a 3rd gen.

Mine is new so can't speak personally however interested in everyone else's input.

 

I second the cooled seats are not great but love everything else about it.

 

2017 with 45k miles- zero issues. There isn’t a ton of tech upgrades in this trim so there’s really no issue with reduced reliability. The upgrades it has however are definitely worth it in my opinion. Now that I’ve had them I wouldn’t go back to a limited.
I’ve upgraded wheels, tires, suspension and headlights and it’s now 99% of where I want it.
It’s a great truck, you won’t be disappointed.

 

Thanks for all the info eveyone. My gut feeling was reliability was not gonna be affected but there is no better way to know then real world experience.

@Bravo-Six The new Tundra does look good, but if those renderings come true I'm not sure I like the Titan-esque styling of the side profile. Also not looking to have to use premium fuel to feed the v6 turbo motor. My CTS-V uses enough of that.

 

2019 no issues. Use heated and cooled seats 80% of the time and no issues. Always have assisted power exit (steering wheel and seats) on 100% and no issues. Power folding mirrors used 80% of the time, no issues either.

 

2010 190,000 preventatively replaced working alternator at 188K because I often end up 50 miles away from another human or cell tower. No issues whatsoever.

Best mod was to move the rear window switch to behind the gear shift instead of under the steering wheel.

 

2018 1794 - had it for 2 years, no issues.
2021 Platinum - bought in December, obviously no issues.

Remember, they’re Toyota’s...

It gets me, the reviews about Tundras you read here and there, talking about the “lack of technology”, “out dated”, etc. I think that’s why most of us like them. They are TRUCKS.

 

2018 with 43k miles. Not a single problem.

Couple things I wish were different:

- Factory “Premium” JBL system is an absolute joke at how truly awful it is. On the plus side, it gave me a reason to do a full custom system. The JBL in my 4Runner is light years better.

- Heated (work well) / cooled (kinda suck) seats, but no heated steering wheel or heated back seats? Come on Toyota, these aren’t crazy high tech things and should be standard on top of the line trim.

- On my 18 there is only one USB port. I believe they have two or three now beginning in 2020. Still none in the back I believe, just a single 12v.

 

My 2017 Platinum is an absolute money pit.

Everything works on the truck, the cooled seats are really just circulation fans though.
Sound system is disappointing, change out the head unit and it will wake up the system to be tolerable until a proper upgrade. (Already bought my Focal system from a member on here, thanks George!)
It’s been a financial black hole because it’s so effin’ reliable that I’ve been upgrading a lot of it. Wheels, tires, TRD Pro suspension, 2019 Pro Headlights + way more than I care to mention.

 

2019 with 13k miles no issues - my favorite truck I have ever owned. By the looks of it I might better start putting some more miles on it.

Platinums are more of an acquired taste. Once you've developed your palette, the results are better refined and these trucks take on whole new appreciation. Plus, with precision and focused attention to detail, your baby can preform like any other model, only difference, you already have all the extras.

 

2014 platinum with 210k miles. Everything works great. Anything that is considered an upgrade for this trim has never failed.

Things that needed to be repaired

Waterpump was weeping upon purchase at 173k miles, replaced waterpump, belt, and tensioner, filled with new antifreeze

Tailgate strut is finally failing. Need to replace it. I use it ALOT

Door seals on driver and passenger seat are torn on the bottom from PO probably dragging his feet across it

Replaced fuel pump at 197k with a kit from URD and upgraded the fuel pump to an aeromotive and bypassed the internal filter for a replaceable external filter

Leather is starting to wear on the bolster where your butt slides, which is expected at this age with this amount of miles, but no tears, I can post pictures soon if you'd like

PO had a u joint changed shortly before I bought the truck, around 170k

Had to replace the motor in one door actuator, cost me 5 bucks for the motor and a little bit of my time.

Might replace the alternator soon, or just buy a spare to keep in the truck for a roadside repair.

I consider all of these wear items that lasted plenty long enough to please me. I am completely satisfied with this truck in every way, it has plenty enough features to keep me happy. I work this truck hard, pull an 8k camper, and off road alot. I have my foot in it everywhere I go, and she never once struggled. It's a great feeling having this kind of reliability. I'll have 300k on her in about 2.5 years.

@Velocity72 i understand what you mean. I bought my 4runner in the Trd Off road trim because it was simpler then most.

My biggest reason for looking at the Platinum trim is because i plan on keeping this vehicle for a long time and figure might as well get a plush vehicle for what will be my daily. I am lucky enough to live 3 miles from where i work so mpg is not a huge issue. Reliability is more my concern and the Toyotas that i have owned prior to the 4runner where more old school(1989 and older) so my experience with newer Toyotas is limited.

2018 with 40K and no issues. I've dragged that truck all over the country on and off road and it is solid. I leveled it with the 6112 coil overs and the 5160s in the rear so it sits better and isn't as splashy off road. All the extra stuff doesn't really amount to much in the way of things to breakdown...in my opinion. I also put the TRD Pro wheels on this truck so I could get a little larger tire on without lifting it. I like the luxury of the seats being heated and cooled but the TRD Pro didn't come with those options and here in Cali they were parking those rigs up nearly 20K making them like 70 grand out the door. Dealerships wouldn't even talk about price reductions at the time I bought mine. The tires that came on the TRD Pro wheels were garbage and left me on the side of a dirt road in Idaho last summer.

 

Mine has a little over 3,000 miles and no issues lol.

 

They were marking the Platinum up to 70K? That’s crazy. I just bought a brand new 2021 for 55k out the door.

 

I believe he is talking about Pros.

Up here in Alaska they have about $5k mark up I believe. They have them listed for $58K.

 

If you plan to buy this time next year it will be a 2022 and the first year of the new generation Tundra, you might want to stay away for a couple of years until they work all the bugs out.
