Painting in progress!

Hey guys. Not sure if I’m posting this In the right place, btw, I’m new..
I recently took the pinstripe off my 06 tundra. It left a lot of gouges in the paint so tried to repaint the stripe area and blend it. It came out horrendous, apparently I need practice blending, plus the color was a good bit darker. I’m looking to two-tone paint the truck to get rid of the mess I made. Any good ideas of a paint scheme or examples of what you have done? I’m out of ideas. Here’s a pic before the stripe was removed and the dents/scratches fixed. I’d like to keep the phantom gray but Maybe black from the door handles up. I’m fully open to other ideas though if anyone can help. I also have an airbrush and am fairly good at it. My imagination is just failing me atm. Would love some help. Thanks

 

I don't thing this gen has the body lines for two-tone if anything maybe look at hilux paint schemes for inspiration, if possible just re-do the whole truck in your preferred paint color.

 

yea it really doesn’t have much in the way of body lines. Hard to know where to start and stop. Thanks for the suggestion, I’ll check out helix

I have an ugly gold Tundra with bad paint, so I think about this occationally, because I think it would be expensive to do a total color change. I had this picture of a T100 saved, because I think this would work on the Tundra as well. It might not look right with the fender flares however. Mine has no flares , like this T100.

Another idea: You can do the front grille Chrome, as well.

 

There’s a 4th gen 4runner that lives or works near my work that has that paint scheme but the black is on the bottom, it looks pretty sweet but not shamoo cool

 

Thanks for the ideas.i went ahead and started sanding, just gonna paint the whole truck. Probably phantom pearl gray again with black accents. Not 100% sure yet. I’m thinking about going with nason for the paint, never had any experience with it but I’ve heard it’s good. Any thoughts?

 

I've never heard of that paint, I had to look it up. I've used Dupont, Ditzler, or PPg and have had good luck with all three, but now it's so hard to come by in California for backyard painters I've almost stopped painting altogether, with the exception of a small project here and there, mostly motorcycle parts now. I'll be interested in the project and I hope you will update this thread as your project move long. Good painting.

 

Not sure how this would look or if it could even be done with the lines on a tundra. Pretty cool paint scheme tho

 

got the truck almost fully sanded and primed. should be ready for paint by tuesday if i have the time. I photoshopped this image to try and decide on the paint job. any thoughts??

One possible problem i can see is that the grey paint has a bunch of metal flake in it, while the black and the white pinstripe (i already have the paint) has no flake. Not sure if this would look stupid or not. anybody with more experience than me have any input??

I’d stay metallic with all the colors. Maybe just paint the engine hood and cab top black. Skip painting the pillars and window trim. Skip the white pin strip, too.

When I got this truck the factory clear coat was beyond salvation on the hood and roof. I sanded, prepped and bedlined. The rest of the paint buffed out well. All trim and badging blacked-out. Also replaced OE grille with a black one. I no likey de chrome. Not everyone's thang but might give you some ideas.

Sweet truck brother! the black goes really well with the factory color, i may have to think about it. i def like that you blacked out the chrome as well, im considering that. i did my fenders in bed-liner because they were scratch and dented to hell, so the it hides most of that. (pain in the a** to keep clean btw). Its about time to redo them anyway though. Did you have to sand and prime the chrome? Ive ever tried painting chrome before.

 

Front bumper: sanded and primed with etching primer. Rear bumper: replaced with aftermarket black OE style. Trim: it's plastic, carefully removed all trim... cleaned well, applied adhesion promoter, then bedlined and reattached - same for the silver strip on the side trim except I masked that.

 

I'm with you on keeping the grey, it's a good look. On my own rig which is grey I plan doing all black accents and am still undecided on doing the lower third in all black with

raptor liner. I have a buddy he has started going a bit nuts with the stuff but has had pretty good luck with color matching on the product.

 

Careful putting to much Bedliner. That stuff absorbs every piece of dirt and dust on the road. It’s like trying to clean 60 grit sandpaper.

 

Iffn you want a cowgirl you wanna leave all that mud on there, they don't cotton to fancy lads up hya.

 

Well I finally finished the body work and got my hood primed.



Also I got my grille and front bumper primed and sprayed the black. I'm liking it so far.



Tomorrow I should be spraying all the phantom pearl grey. Weather permitting lol.
I have a little visqueen house that I built to keep the dust and bugs out but if it rains or gets too humid I'm in trouble.



Once I get this finished It'll be doors next.
Then its just the whole rest of the damn truck lol.

 

Pressure washer at the car wash cleans Bedliner easy Peezy. I had ram 3500 with the rocker panels line-x’d and and xterra with all the plastics done in rust oleum truck bed coating.

My truck has never stayed cleaner than since I did Mostaliner. Its like coating the truck with Teflon, it may grab dust but you can wipe it clean with your hand pretty much. And actually i like the look of the truck dirty better than clean anyway, levels out the gloss of the liner some.

 

I just shot some Nason primer, worked well. I did reduce it though the guy behind the counter said it wasn't necessary. You can always add flake to the paint colors you have that aren't metallic. I don't know if you're shooting clear on top but you can add pearl to clear and create unique finishes that way too. TCP Global is where I've been ordering supplies on line. After a couple years worth of off road pinstripes I'm painting my truck a matte, midnight blue pearl and using their Hot Rod Flatz.

 

That's gonna be a nice truck. Id like to see pics when you get moving on it.
I havent sprayed primer through my gun yet, Im still using oem primer from the can. It's got a good tip so it sprays almost as nicely. At the end of the day it would've been cheaper to buy a quart and buy the bigger spray nozzle. lol

I did my bumper and grille today (3 base and 3 clear) All nason products.. It seems to be a bit thinner than I'm used to with chromabase. Really happy with it though, good paint. Just needed an extra coat on everything.

I thought about adding flake to my black but I'm not doing a very large area so I kinda think I like the contrast. Didn't know i could add pearl to the clear, that sound cool.

The blue/yellow taped areas would be the black paint (non-metallic?)
