Oil change at the dealer today....

$40? What oil and filter are you using? Mobil 1 oil costs roughly $60 and then another $6 for the filter.

 

Obviously it's going to depend on other things as well like the overall condition of the vehicle, but all other things being equal hard proof that the vehicle has been well maintained and well cared for will certainly allow you to charge a premium price. A complete list of maintenance records from a dealer isn't going to allow you to charge more for a vehicle with body rust and all the clear coat gone off of the hood, but 3rd party verification that all maintenance has been performed as prescribed at a dealer will definitely allow you to charge a premium price for a vehicle that's otherwise in good condition. With Toyota's great reputation and generally high resale value anyway I would think complete dealer maintenance could easily get you an extra 1k or more in the private seller market. More miles on the vehicle probably means those records have more of an impact on the price. It's really common to hear people talk about those records factoring in their decision to buy a used vehicle - especially a higher mileage one.

 

Mobil 1 cost $28 for 5 quarts. Truck takes 7.9qts so whats that 45bucks, plus a filter . $51

BUT, since the oil change interval is 10k miles, I only change the filter every 10, I replace the oil every 5. 7.4qts if you don't change the filter.

There is no real reason I do it this way, but it keeps me happy.

 

I agree 100%, If I were buying a used vehicle I'd like to see those records as well. But I'd probably just as happy to see a handwritten log of oil changes in the back of the manual.

All of this is assuming resale to another individual. I doubt having detailed maintenance logs matter much at all if you trade it in. They look for dents/scratches and funny smells, then off to the auction they go.

This is why I don't go to the dealer ... even for free oil changes!

 

I've no issues changing my own oil; with that said, our local dealership (Seeger Toyota in St. Robert, MO) is fantastic. The first time I asked if I could watch just for giggles, they said "Sure" and actually *pulled up a lawn chair* for me to sit in. I mentioned to them that I must not be the first one who's asked this.

They said "Nope, but we totally understand - I did the same thing before I started working here."

 

found out today that I am missing my skid plate. I wasn't too happy and my guy at the stealership is getting an ear full right now!

 

OMG!!! I had an oil change and they had mis-mached hardware on my skid plate, that was a fun phone call.

 

The OEM skid plate is the first thing I throw away.

I have an RCI part ready to install. It weighs about 3x as much as the OEM part and is twice as long. Debating whether I should put it on now or do it in conjunction with my next oil change.

 

If I throw it away that's my choice. The dealer leaving it off after an oil change is a whole different story.

 

Yea yea I know,I’m a 2nd gen but it’s oil change related and happened this week!!!

I took my truck to a local shop to get the oil changed while I was out yesterday

They changed it and said on the checkout paperwork that I had an oil leak

It was typed at the very bottom of the paper,nowhere obvious of course. I saw the comments while waiting in the fast food drive thru before coming back home.

I drove it home and parked it. I was disappointed and knew something was up.

This afternoon I drove it up on ramps and dropped the skid plate. Just as I suspected,a cracked plastic oil filter housing. Also, one of my skid plate 12mm bolts was missing entirely.

I got the wife’s car and went to O’Reilly’s Auto Parts. I purchased a Mobil 1 oil filter,a Dorman metal oil filter housing, and 3 cans of brake cleaner

Then I went to Harbor Freight and bought a $19.99 3/8 Torque Wrench that went from 5ft-80ftlbs torque

I changed out the OEM housing guts into the metal one,installed the proper lubricated o rings/filter,and tightened to spec along with cleaning up everything with brake cleaner.

Now I have completed my first “cartridge” oil change the “proper” way.

It truly was not difficult at all,only a little more time consuming than the spin on ones

My wife now says I’m doing them myself since nobody can do it right lol

 

It's terrifying letting dealers work on your truck....

 

you guys are missing when they rotate your tires the scratch the crap out of your rims and deform you lug nuts....

 

Hell you can have mine after i install my rci skid plates tomorrow, just pay travel...

 

welp I guess I need to sit down and eat a plate of good old crow. according to the dealer Toyota doesn't put skid plates on 2wd trucks any longer. said they looked it up and it never came with one. they were as shocked to learn that as I was.

mind passing the salt???

 

I did that to myself the first change I made when incorporating the aluminum filter housing vs. the plastic one. Started the truck and backed it out of the garage--looked like the Exxon Valdez beached right there! I just drained everything, cleaned and re-attacked using the OEM plastic filter housing. I still use the plastic filter housing--voodoo or something to tempt fate by trying the aluminum one again!

 

I just received my RCI skid and changed the oil at same time when installed.

 

Well that is embarrassing.
