So...do I go TRD Pro, 1794 or new SR5

Sorry to hear, Shamrock. I do agree with the sentiments you’ve expressed though, which is why my wife urged me to go Pro. It’s more than was necessary, but we’ve worked hard, come a long way, and it won’t bankrupt us.
There’s a difference between enjoying what you’ve worked for, and being reckless. You don’t come across as the latter.

 

I don't know - I'm still struggling with the math of everything.

On one hand, I hear 50-55k and think - damn that's alot...

Then I look at some of the Big 3 offerings - a mid level F150 Lariat stickers well above that range, as does a Silverado 1500....and those aren't "top of line packages".

Yes - they offer incentives....but still going to be mid 5s - which is nutty to me. In 3 years the spread between used trade and sell price on those models will be huge - much slimmer on the Tundra.

Really got to do my research on the trim levels - Limited looks nice, saves a little coin and gets you all the nice options.

I'm also kind of struggling on the CM or DC. I don't need the CM, but resale wise it seems to help. Hopefully making it to a dealer this week and will report back.

 

So here's what I've come up with so far:

- Do a Pro DC

- Do a SR5 CM - add Trail Package or TRD Sport pack

- Wait for used

Of course cant go wrong with any option. Pros and cons with each i can think of

Pro - gets me color o like best, but smaller cab - doesn't matter much to me but maybe that changes down the road/impacts resale

SR5 - bigger cab and much more available, best bang for buck and resale. Can add the few things about the Pro I lose - but at a cost....lose the preferred color

Used - In my price range can expect a pretty well dressed truck with low use/no abuse. Miss out on choice of color and could be a week - or months...just have to take what market hands you so less negotiation power overall.

Guess I will continue to sleep on it - talk to dealer and see what works best. SR5 also may qualify for incentives - probably a grand, might go back to 2k (depends on which zip I use - im between 2 and it varies from 0-2k as I set between 2 markets.

 

Why not SR5 TRD Sport DC?

 

I had a similar predicament. SR5, Limited, Plat or Pro...at what cost?!?! Holy Cr@P.
Found a Black 19 TRD Pro with 12K and had it on "hold" while the dealership worked thru the recalls preventing a sale.
- Discovered that the Pro would be bordering on $60K used and I said nope.

Drove the Limited & Plat and it felt like Grandpa's truck. (No offense to the Seniors out there)
Looked at the 1794 and they had SOOO many on the lot, it made me think twice.
Then found my 17 SR5 and said this is the one to build into "my" truck. (Not the dogs, albeit they have the honor of driving with me)
Then I started looking at all the options and as everyone stated, you can do MORE for so much less via aftermarket.

I ended up saving over 50% in base price by stepping down into an SR5 but now I have all of the aftermarket mods at my fingertips.

No offense taken, you young little whipper snapper! Actually, I would agree with you about the "old man" look of the stock, chrome-covered Tundras if I wouldn't be indicting myself... But Gramps has fixed this sonny-boy!

 

Its a consideration - only reasons I didn't mention are

A. Some packages aren't available on DC i believe

B. If wife oks you to expend "x" amount on a truck - you spend X. You don't try to save money - because you will never see those savings again. I can always add accessories through the dealer for example - but saying "yea. I spent 5k less and am going to buy 5k in accessories to put on myself" probably does not go well.

Spend what I can - when I can.

The Pro is nice - but honestly think i can get fundamentally the same truck without the badging going the SR5 route and adding what I want.

Of course 2022 could come early and make me want one - but I strongly doubt it. There is nothing on the Big 3 I want on a 2021 Tundra - so can't see anything a 2022 might add.

 

I think the TRD Sport is an excellent package. I love the color key bumpers (including the center section that is fantastic, IMHO). You can always change tires and wheels... or drive those 20's onward. You could add a more throaty exhaust or leave it stock. The soul of the Tundra is there.

Shamrock, look at the used market. Myself I would never by from a dealership. Just talk to a car salesman outside of work to hear what the markup at the dealership is. I found my truck on FB marketplace after shopping for months. Anyone who is honest about selling a quality truck will not have any issues letting you take it to your local trusted mechanic. After watching many many tundra reviews I’m glad I picked the 1794 CM in white. I highly recommend this package or the platinum. All the available options that Toyota has to offer in the tundra minus the TRD pro suspension. Enough said. Wish you luck

 

Another day - another change if heart...

This time its color. Think I'm going Cavalry Blue....just reminds me of my dad/granddads old '76 Chevy pickuo...if you can't have the real thing...go with something that evokes the memory.

I also think I'm going SR5 with the TRD Sport...looking further into the Trail Package - I just don't care for some of the exterior touches.

But pricing the package on DC vs CM - it looks like the CM is only like 900 more...considering that the base models have like a 5k difference - why such a relatively small difference? Am I missing something here or it it just much less expensive to go with the bigger cab?

Thanks everyone for the help spending my money...oh yea, why not used....simply put - price/selection. Even if i go private party - its not like there's a wide selection on 19/20 SR5s in the configuration I want for sale in a 250 mile radius. Just easier to spec it out - say here is my price and if Dealer A cant do it - keep moving down the alphabet till we find a match.

I just purchased that exact trim. I’m not sure where you’re at but I only found 2 in this trim in 3 surrounding states ( I’m in SoCal) They are very hard to find not to mention they are marking them up. Cavalry blue is also hard to find. Production is way down, it’s the last year of the 5.7, and demand is up. Dealers here will not order one and are unsure what they are going to get next delivery ( if they get any). Good luck! Hope you get what you want.

 

If you gonna keep the truck then get an sr5 and mod it, will save about 10k on purchase and mods Will be 3-5k.

Only problem is that 90% of the times, an sr5 will only be worth the regular price, unless you find the right buyer who loves all your mods, everything you modded into it will be lost if you trade it in or sell privately.

 

A close friend of mine just ordered a Cavalry Blue last month and it is expected next month. He went with a TRD Offroad DC though. If I ordered a Tundra I would have gotten the Cavalry or Red. The cement was on the lot and I actually love it now especially with the chrome tidbits

 

I went back and forth from army green, to red, to Calvary blue to white. In the end I decided I wanted Calvary Blue. Then I started looking around and determined it would be difficult to get one and negotiate a good price. Finally settled on a red SX package. After having the red truck for a month i think I would have rather had Calvary blue but overall I'm happy.

BTW Calvary blue is the one color I think looks ok with the chrome. I actually think Calvary blue looks better with the chrome then it does with color matched bumpers. Only for that blue though. With every other tundra color I would go sport all day.

 

Yes, checking Toyota website and no Cavalry currently in allocation line.

Army Green or Black

Either would be "acceptable" I'm sure - but I'm just not 100% sold on either yet. Black is hot as hell in summer and army green is a "jeep" color to me.

The blue attracted me for sentimental reasons - so might try...worst case, I go with something else....its not like I can really go wrong.

 

White is the fastest color!

 

I think I'm stuck on cavalry blue as my top choice and if I found the right deal may take cement, voodoo or mgm. How do you tell whats in the allocation line? When I go to the toyota website and try to build my options change with different zip codes.

 

The Army Green is really really nice.

 

@Shamrock92 ...in all honesty brother go out and order the EXACT truck you want. Don’t settle for a truck cause you will always regret it. Additionally who gives two flying S...H...I...T...S... about the “deal” because there is always be a better deal. But a better deal will never replace happiness with the “right” deal for you. Just drive the Tundra that you really want and NEVER look back...ain’t worth the time or effort. IMHO.

 

So much truth above... Get what you want, and don't settle for less. We're not talking frivolous differences between these vehicles, honestly. It isn't a TRX as a second vehicle, or Ferrari as a daily driver.

 

I've been over this in my mind a thousand times. From waiting on a Trail Edition that has a build date of 3-15-21 to buying from an out of state dealer to whatever pops up on line. Well I found a Limited Cement TRD Offroad that just got off the delivery truck at the same dealership that I bought my current truck from. With the Toyota cash it's almost 4k off msrp. I think it's too good of a deal to pass up. My only hang up about the Limited is all the chrome. I'm going to look at it today and make a decision. But those chrome door handles though

 

Those handles are a super easy swap. If the rest of the truck is right, don’t let that be the hangup.

 

Remember your goals and purpose for the truck and stick to them!
I did the SR5 with upgrade package and, although aftermarket stuff is still fun to put on and you save a little from trim packages, it gets tougher as you get older. I picked the truck I did to maximize towing and payload capacity. DC 4x4 with 6.5’ bed (7,100# GVWR) fit my needs.
Keep reading the forums and listen to these guys - I’m suspecting many of them could build a Tundra from the ground up!

The Pro vs Offroad - As I said - I'm torn.

It won't come down to $$ - that much i do know. Realistically - what are we talking, 5 grand...sounds like alot until you realize your making a 50k decision.

The Pro will be tougher to find - but will command better resale/stand out a bit more

 

I am in the exact same boat...was considering the 1794, but the chrome...I couldn’t get past. I was looking for replacement grills, replacement bumpers...Then I started looking at TRD Pro, not as many color options, but it does have more of the things I think are important- I tow a lot, and drive in the snow. I think the tow package is a good thing. Then I looked at the Dodge, Ford and GM offerings and some have some cool features, but I distrust them having owned all in the past not to mention the cost!!! I cannot imagine spending 75k for a pickup truck, maybe I am old?

I think I will be going with the TRD Pro...

 

If you tow anything sizeable, the Pro is not the best choice as it's leveled and thus is going to squat with any decent weight in the back.

 

Ugh weak springs in the rear I assume? I had to install Old Man EMU’s on my Taco to prevent the squatting...is there any Toyota that would not need a spring upgrade?

Perception! What a funny thing. I am old enough to remember when color matched trim was a bad thing since it screamed base model and you couldn't afford the higher trim or options. Now everyone wants to delete chrome. How much you want to bet your rug rats will be putting chrome bling on their trucks when they are old enough to own one.
