Cooper AT3 XLT

I definitely will keep on top of rotating.

I bought the truck used, I guess the previous owner didn't keep after that.

The old tires only have about 25,000 miles on them

Maybe this is old thinking, but I always thought radial tires had to be rotated front to back only?

Anyone with these tires on TSS wheels and if so what size did you get?

 

They don't have to be but I always have done it that way. Discount Tire will normally look at wear and will occasionally cross them after several regular rotations.

 

I remember someone telling my dad years ago that they should only be done front to back because if you change the rotational direction the radial bands will cut into the rubber in the opposite direction.... Found out later that it was a rumor. In the beginning, and still today with high performance tires, they were/are made to be directional. The high performance tires have tread and grooves that are designed to force water out and only work in one direction. Those tires will have an arrow on the sidewall and should not be cross rotated. The XLT's are not directional and crossing them helps a lot with how they wear.

 

Some shops will have the sense to actually look at the wear, but most will just rotate front to back without giving it any thought. I have just worked it into my regular schedule and tell them how I want to rotate when I drop the truck off. That way I don't leave it up to them to make the decision and I also know what tire has been where on the truck, and that the wear is evenly distributed through the life of the tires. It just makes it easier.

Yes. So always good to confirm first.
But if it is not directional then cross rotation works for me. As said above, I have 40,000 on my current set and zero feathering. I had feathering after the first 5,000 that made me realize that if I don't do something proactive it will just get worse. My previous set of tires that was just rotated front to back had really bad feathering when I replaced them with these.

 

I think @Jim LE 1301 has some. Not sure what size.

 

66k on my OEM BFGs and no feathering with regular rotation. Rocks on hunting ranch have not been kind to them but happy with tread life. I do mostly Hwy.

 

I just got some yesterday on my TSS, size 275/60/R20. Could have potentially gone with 275/65/R20 without rubbing, there seems to be room. Here's my thread:

4 inches of snow and ice last night in VA...my Coopers handled excellent, in case anyone was wondering about snow performance.

I can’t decide between staying with a 20in wheel or dropping down to a 18 or 17inch wheel.

 

I love them Rich. No road noise, great in rain and snow. 17" or 18" would definitely be cheaper but then you have to pay for new rims so overall cost would be more.

It's a real downer when you get all 4 winter tires bolted on and nicely rotated including crossing rears to front, then remember they're directional , guess I felt like changing 6 tires that day...

 

Do these not come in 35's on 17 inch wheels? I only see 315/70/17 (super super close to 35's anyway though and cheaper than the 35 18's)

 

How about this size, LT285/65R20, in the discover AT3 XLT, and I can get them with a RWL, yes thats actually one of the things I am looking for besides performance, if that tire will fit with the TSS wheels and the old man emu suspension I have then thats the tire I am going for. @Jim LE 1301

Or I can go the LT275/65R20, with the RWL and its about half an inch narrower than the LT285 tire.

 

I was going to get those but it was like $120 more. Didn't think the white letters were worth that. I may get a paint pen in the Spring and see how that looks.

LOL, Jim's picture is what caused me to pull the trigger on the Coopers! They look good enough to eat

So I was faced with the same decision, have 20" TSS rims. Tire selection in general is not as good compared to 18" rims but those coopers seem to come in all sizes. The 275/60/R20 is a good upgrade and 275/65/R20 would likely fit as well. If you wider the price goes up significantly, I considered 285/60/R20 but they're $330/tire.

 

Please don't eat them.

 

In the early days of steel belted radials I believe this was a true statement. Remember the Firestone 721 debacle? Now the steel belts are not supposed to squirm if cross rotated.

275/60/R20. I could have gone to 275/65/R20 without rubbing, my tires have a good half inch of clearance to the front air dam at full lock. The side profile pic here is with the wheel straight so the clearance appears much larger.

so by rubbing are you talking about front air damn or body mount?

 

They are taller, not wider. More sidewall, that's what the middle number means. 65 is taller than a 60 (34" instead of 33".) I'm talking about the front air dam - many take it off.

285 is wider than 275.
