Has Anyone Painted/Plasti Dipped Their OEM Wheels?

Had the winter wheel set (OEM rims) powdercoated.

 

I like the color....what product did you use and what is the color?

 

Plasti dip Anthracite with gloss

 

Hmmm, a blank canvas...what color should I paint em'?

 

Just used anthracite grey

 

Here's the black sapphire metallic I posted about planning on using when it warmed up. Guess I forgot to circle back. Used it for a chrome delete on wheels and emblems. Happy with the product from www.dipyourcar.com.

 

Can I see some more pics of your whole truck with this paint on the wheels? That looks great and I’m thinking about doing the same design as yours!

 

That looks like a great option. I originally thought about the vinyl sticker option, then plasti dip. Is this paint permanent or is it like plasti dip? Yours look very nice.

I would go powder coat before paint and paint before plastidip.

If you live in a high trafficked high pollution area I would avoid Plasti Dip. Plasti Dip is sensitive to petroleum based chemicals and will diminish the durability and appearance of the dip over time. Even with proper care, I wouldn't expect dip to last more than 12 to 18 months in this situation. Yes you can touch it up and spray on additional layers but it looks like crap over time, you are better off peeling it off and applying fresh coats.

 

Just plasti dipped my factory 17s this week to see if I like the black wheel look. I think I do.

I think I'm about $12 all in? If it lasts a year I'll be very impressed.

 

Looks great! If you put enough coats, 1 thin and 4 or more wet, it'll last the year, or so, until it's time to replace the tires. I did get some small scratches when my wheels were rotated, too.

 

Here are mine. Gonna redo them when the weather breaks with the new hyper dip gloss black. Looks really good.

 

My son dipped his wheels and so did a friend of his. 6 months later and their wheels look like crap.

I recommend:
- Powerwash the wheels
- Wipe with alcohol
- Paint with your Rustoleum or your favorite rattle can

Don't Dip. It's just a rubber coating. Fine for your emblems but not for your wheels.

 

I think of it more as a way to basically test drive a look for almost free before committing to a more permanent solution.

 

If they're prepped correctly, and sufficient (5-7) coats of a quality product are applied, there's no way you wouldn't get at least a year out of the dip so long as your not rotating or replacing tires. Mine are nearly a year and now have a few scuffs on the lugs from a recent rotation. In PA, the wheels get pulled during inspection so there's no way around it. Once cleaned, it's easy to touch up the lugs and apply another coat of dip armor. Btw, can only use certain tire dressing products or you'll melt/smear the dip. Thats really strange. My wheels looked great even after a year. My son has had his wheels dipped for over a year slso, and they look like new. My guess is that the didnt prep the wheels properly. They have to be clean, and you have to apply enough coats. At least 7 good coats, more coats at are always better.

 

Yes! It should be noted not to use strong wheel cleaners on them also. I just use car wash soap (chemical guys) and a soft brush or microfiber rag. No harsh scrubbing. Also I only use water based tire dressing on my tires also. Oil based dressing can degrade the dip over time.

They came out pretty well, and the custom center cap works.

 

Same, really debating between this and the black on my super white Tundra.

 

Did you use the copper or gold plastidip? What did you end up doing with the lug nuts and the screws for the ring? Looks killer BTW!!

 

Thanks! I used bronze. Had to order if because they didn’t stock it at my local OReillys. I removed 95% of the trim ring screws (and blew through 6x torx bits in the process) and the ones that absolutely would not come out, I used masking tape and a surgical knife to tape them off before paint.
