In the US, the Tacoma outsold the Corolla and was not far behind the Camry. I think Toyota is in the truck market to stay. The large SUV market is one I see them letting go of

They aren’t going anywhere. They make so much money from fleet sales and the brand loyalists despite having issues or not.

Is there a precedent for that? (E.g., blaming vendors for failures and pushing warranty repair costs onto them) I mean, even I've heard stuff like "Well, there was an issue with a part that we outsource to a vendor" but Toyota (or Ford, etc.) to my knowledge has always covered repairs instead of saying "Oh well, CrapTek made this part so go talk to them...."

That's because they WAY over produce. There certainly won't be a shortage for F-150's anytime soon, with the exception of special orders.

Yep. There's enough that it's super-easy to find huge deals, at least around here. I read elsewhere in this thread, I think, where someone said "You won't see huge discounts right now on any of the manufacturers' trucks" or something similar; and all I could think was "Well, that ain't the case here." I can *EASILY* find a truck discounted $10K or so - and that's on their site, so it doesn't count further discounting once @ the dealership haggling.

(Not that I want a non-Tundra, mind you. LOL)

Ford has acknowledged their recent quality issues and said there’s plenty of internal and external culpability to go around.

Yup, this is the case in most markets. Huge inventory brings huge discounts.

I had a hankering to really look at the Gladiator, but when new, there were no discounts to be found. Last year this time, as units languished on dealer lots, I started seeing discounts in the 10K range. Because I was a 30 year Jeep owner going back to the original Cherokee in 86, I wanted to love the truck. Drove every trim level at 4-5 dealers, and made an offer that basically amounted to trading my 17 Tundra TRD PRO (paid off), and driving away in the Gladiator with me ONLY paying tax and tags. I wanted the loaded Rubicon or Overland.

The dealer worked numbers and there was a $10K gap. I said NOPE and walked away. I liked it, especially the Freedom top and a few things, but was giving up too much I liked, a Truck I loved and was paid off. 4 months later the dealer called me and said he would do the deal on the same truck if I came in that day. Bottom line, they were willing to give me $38K for the Tundra, and mark the Gladiator down from $52K to $38K. He wasn't happy when I said no.

What he didn't know was that I talked a dealer into giving me a demo truck overnight. I drove it for almost 2 days, 400+ miles and really liked it, and would have bought it had he agreed to my terms. I was SO GLAD he didn't, because after 2 days in the Gladiator, when I climbed back in my Tundra, it took only 500 feet for me to realize I was being a sentimental fool for wanting to continue my "Jeep thing" The Tundra is such a great truck, and a keeper. I've done experiments with a few buddies, swapped trucks for an hour or two to compare, and every time I get back in the Tundra, I find that it is JUST RIGHT.

Excellent post. I mean, we all have things we'd like to see updated, and the like. With that said, when purchasing my truck, I test drove it a bunch. Even though the wife told me "I trust you and I KNOW you do a lot of research," I told her I wanted her to test drive with me.

We got in it and drove around; went offroad a bit (gravel and some hills near where I live), tested 4WD, messed with the tow/haul button ( :D ), and so on. We weren't even 5 minutes into the test drive when she turned to me and said "NOW I understand why you've lusted after this truck for years." She loves the truck as much as I do.

Maybe they will just come out with a twin turbo 5.7 hybrid, lol. But with the current shortage or semi conductor chips a lot of values might be climbing. Many dealerships are already offering several thousand above trade in. Still not worth it, but if they want to give my 50,000 plus for my 2018 we might talk, lol.

I’d imagine that Ford would cover the warranty and then try and recoup their costs through the vendor.

Evidently I don't know as much about vehicle production and manufacturing as I thought. I was under the impression they already did that.

Agreed. But they sure as heck aren’t gonna say a vendor in China made your switch. Call them and make a warranty claim!

No idea. The official message was that they wanted to reduce warranty costs so that's just my cynical interpretation of how they said they're going to do it.

Big 3 method: who makes the cheapest parts and how can we get them to cut their costs even more while jacking up the price of our vehicles?

Toyota method: "No one makes a transmission that's reliable enough for us? Time to start our own transmission company!"

I’m on pins... 200,000 plus miles on my 5.7L ‘07 and am really on the fence. Something gotta give and I’m not convinced a 6cyl TT is the replacement I want. Turbos don’t age well, and aren’t the best for short hauls or trips. If I want a Raptor or TRX style poser truck then thats what I’d get. I kinda want/need a real truck and the other manufacturers just aren’t making a competitive 1/2 to my existing ‘07, I may have to jump to an HD Denali(?) if all these rumours are true.
    Thoughts anyone? Thank you.

honeslty , there are a lot of good trucks out there , all the others have a N/A v8 out there if this v6 tt deal is the only motor Toyota offers . The others are not as bad as they are made out to be on a tundra site, my ram was fine. I like tundras a lot though too.

If there is only the ttv6 I will be there with you trying to see if that works for me, the gmc 6.2 has some potential for me.

want to drive this new tundra if the damn thing ever comes out

Not sure I like that it uses WiFi to connect. I might want to be able to connect to a different WiFi network. Also, I actually liked being plugged in cause it charges and is generally just fast and seamless. I’m hoping Apple’s adapter will use something other WiFi.

That’s how Apple has designed wireless CarPlay to work though, as it requires so much more bandwidth than Bluetooth can offer, especially on older devices. They would lose all the compatibility with existing devices if they introduced some new wireless protocol to handle the CarPlay connection. I just don’t see it happening...I see them designing some sort of magnetic connector for hard-wired data similar to how they connect keyboards, etc., but wireless connectivity for data transmission is going to remain BT or WiFi. Maybe a second WiFi radio, but that seems a stretch to cram into these devices.

I’m in the same boat with 182k on my 2008 CrewMax. I pull a 7k camper all over the U.S. and the Tundra has been doing fine, but over my payload with no issues what so ever. Considered some 3/4 ton gassers, but not impressed by any. Never bought a new vehicle in my life, only used Toyota’s and run them for 10+ years. Thought this might be the year for my first new vehicle ever. With increased payload, torque, HP, and gas mileage I was fired up for this new Tundra.
    Hopefully we hear something soon!

The more they wait, the more customers they lose. I don’t understand the delay. Plus with all the production delays with every manufacturer, people are looking now for a late spring/early summer delivery. If they at least give an estimated production date it would give people options if it fits their timetable.

Have you considered the Nissan Titan XD? Much better payload, great warranty. People on the Airstream group report very good results with their gas Nissan tow vehicles. The van is also a popular option.

The Titan XD gasser may be a viable option. I looked at the Deisel version, but payload was not good. Thanks for the insight. I’m also a regular on the Air Forums.

Or maybe the new Tundra is front wheel drive only so they don't want us to see the straight beam axle without differential in the back. :rolleyes:o_O

Agreed. Typically Toyota buyers are loyal and if there is a temporary shortage they will wait a little to get a new truck, but at this point there are just about no new Tundras on the lots, have been for a while and it looks like it will be the case for a while longer. Someone who really need a truck will probably venture out to Ford, Chevy etc. I have seen on this forum a lot of reference to the GMC AT4 as a possible next truck option; if folks are already thinking about other options and the Tundra is not available they will jump ship. It won't kill Toyota, but yes, they will potentially lose some customers.
