RRW Rock Sliders

This is why I haven't altered them yet. If they'd answer my email then I could quit "whining" about it & get to fixing them.

I didn't buy these sliders (and won't) but they're listed on the RRW website at $1200 retail, on sale for $900 for the bare metal version. After taxes and shipping, you'd still be well north of $1k.

 

I paid 825 shipped to me...I would’ve probably went with another brand if I was paying 1000+ To be honest

 

Was that for the weld-it-yourself kit or the assembled one? Looks like the V4 pre-welded set is $850 before shipping. I was looking at the V1 earlier, which is more comparable to the White Knuckle sliders I ordered.

 

No that was for the v3 sliders but during their sale I ordered on 11/30

 

Back on subject people. Michael from RRW has stated that their engineers has said the sliders are acceptable. I don't remember the exact wordage.
I have a problem calling them sliders at this point. I bought sliders and got side steps.
We all (that bought them) have a choice to make....

IF you keep them do you?
A. Make them fit your truck? Cut/drill the sliders(steps)
or
B. Make your truck fit the sliders(steps)? Cut/drill frame of truck.

Then are these changes safe?

 

Are you rock crawling to the point where you’re going to drop the entire weight of the truck on the slider? If not, you’re fine.

You also don’t need to cut/drill the frame of the truck. Enough photos have been posted here that it is clear that the slider can be slotted/ground/reamed to the point where it will mate up. Not ideal, shouldn’t have to do that, but you didn’t buy sidesteps. You bought frame mounted rock rails that need some slight modification.

 

Not rock crawling.
But I am rather fat. Wouldn't want all of my weight to fold the slider(step) down.
I would like to have more than the sliders(steps) just bolted with 4 bolts only to the side of the frame.
For the sliders(steps) to sit flush onto the frame you need to cut the bracket to get around the rivet.
Having the brackets bolted on the bottom of the frame would require drilling the frame. If the sliders(steps) bracket was an inch or two back (maybe it was forward, I forget) this thread would be dead already.

I didn't buy steps, but that is what I got. By RRW's own description they a sliders.

 

There’s at least 4 bottom holes of mine that won’t work without drilling the frame. Possibly all 6 bottom holes.

 

Yeah that’s no good. When I build sliders there is 1 bottom bolt and 2 side bolts for each leg. I do drill the frame though.

 

With only the 4 side bolts on the frame you aren’t going to hurt anything. You didn’t buy steps. Steps bolt to the body and they still manage to hold fat people up just fine.

 

Have you looked at installation instructions of other sliders and noticed bolts in the bottom of the frame? I would think most bolt horizontally or wrap the frame. Some you have to get welded to the frame if you want it strong

 

The wkor sliders also bolt horizontally but can’t be drilled into the bottom if desired

 

I can either drill the frame or weld the bracket to the frame. Both are easily done but both were reasons I bought these particular sliders., they didn’t need either to be done.

 

You are not meant to attach any bottom bolts. All bolts are horizontal through the frame.

The bottom holes should be left open so that liquids can drain should they get inside the frame, which they will.

 

You got sliders. Assuming they are grade 5 3/8" bolts, each bolt is rated to hold up to 6600lbs. x5 = 330000 lbs. I literally jump on mine.

The design of the steps is such that an upward force would be absorbed primarily by the bottom and side supports on the slider. Downward force, as if someone was standing on them, is still partially absorbed by the frame attachment brackets. You shouldn't have anything to worry about.

 

There is zero point in having the tabs on the bottom if you don’t put bolts in them. In fact, they make you more likely to hang up on rocks. This isn’t my first set of sliders. I’ve had a set on 3 of my Jeep’s (1 TJ and 2 XJ’s) my LC, my Taco and now my Tundra. I’m not new to off roading and have been rock crawling one rig or another for over 20 years. Somebody who is new to this game might believe you but I don’t so you’re pissing in the wind talking to me about rock sliders.

 

From an engineering perspective, there is a lot of point. They absorb impact forces.

I'm not new to engineering. There is zero point in putting bolts through the holes that are there to let water escape.

Adding bolts is going to make an even more obstructive surface if your concern is getting caught up on rocks.. Unless you use a panhead or countersunk bolt, at which point you are greatly weakening the surface your attaching to..

An a student of engineering you should clearly see that when the rub tube is on a rock, the force isn’t straight upward but in an arc. That arc force will try to swing the plate that’s against the frame down and out, not up. The bolts on the bottom aren’t the greatest idea but they add much needed strength. I will weld a 1/4” nub of round tubing that the bolt heads will be protected by. Will that hang up? Yep, but not anymore so than they will already. I didn’t get a Tundra to bang in the rocks. I’ll use it for mild rock crawling, logging roads, deer lease work and the like. The sliders also work great for protecting from door dings.

 

This guy with “20 years of rock crawling experience” thinks you can flush your brakes by changing the fluid in the reservoir over and over....

This guy thinks bolts though the bottom of the frame on rock sliders don’t do anything....

I didn't say they don't do anything. I said these designs, and most designs for Tundra sliders, do not have upward bolts. His complaint is that the holes don't line up. I'm saying they're not supposed to.

And yes, if the design is proper the bottom bolts are not at all needed. =D

I just reviewed several install guides for Tundra sliders, the majority of them aren't using bottom bolts. The ones that do require that you drill the frame. The desire to perform zero drilling/modification is the entire reason this thread exists.

 

If you’re going to lift the truck by the sliders or will be in a position where the weight of the truck may be dropped on a slider, you MUST have bottom bolts (edit: or some type of wrap around on the bottom of the frame). What companies are selling sliders without bottom bolts (even optional ones) or some sort of bottom wrap around the frame?

I did, I really didn’t experience bad customer service at all. They refunded me $100 of my purchase price to make up for having to modify the sliders
