That's what I'm thinking. Literally the main reason I bought new at the time I did was because used prices were pretty high...but they were heavily discounting (at least where I live) for a month or two, so the diff. was maybe $4K. A decent discount, but when you get factory warranty and a lifetime engine warranty, it was an easy choice.

Well, sorry. I said "Asia". I've never been to the PRC (People's Republic of China, for those of you in Rio Lindo!). But, my younger brother has been there several times. He spit his coffee, laughing when I told him about your quote regarding China's "renewable energy". Their pollution output BY FAR NEGATES anything that they have accomplished with "renewable energy". Another interesting thing he said, albeit disturbing (but has nothing to do with renewable energy) is that they have very little regard for human life in the PRC. He watched some poor old man on a bicycle get run over by a bus and nobody even flinched. God help us if we ever become like that!

In all honesty it’s the logical move for Toyota, considering the great dumpster fire of 2020. And I guess the thread name too...

Yep. I’ve been to Beijing. There were days we couldn’t stay outside long due to the smog. But it wasn’t as restrictive as I was expecting a communist country to be. AQI is 183 right now at 6 AM. It’ll be much higher during the day.

EVs definitely have their place. I could see using one as a daily commute vehicle for a single person. But, you'd still need a second vehicle to actually take a trip anywhere if you have a family of any size or carry significant cargo, or tow anything, or offroad. EV's and added weight go together like "chinese food and chocolate pudding".

I was told I'm a candidate for driving one as a daily as my commute is ~5 miles (and my wife's commute is less than a mile if she doesn't walk or bike). But we need a truck for camping and I don't see us keeping 3 vehicles long-term.

Right. My concern that the new Tundra will come out with an MSRP more inline with the big 3, which makes it less cost-competitive considering the discounting available on those. Doubly so as a "new model" for Toyota in a time of covid shortages where I doubt many dealers will be willing to deal.

I ordered my 2019 Ram unseen - before they even hit regional car shows - and still got $9500 off MSRP. If Toyota comes out with a compelling package I'm definitely willing to give a Tundra a shot, but it's going to have to be price and feature competitive. In any event, it's great to have so many choices for high-performance feature loaded trucks these days.

PS: It's 5 pm est, where are the news leaks??

That was my point. For Toyota to be price-competitive, they have to msrp a whole lot less than the American trucks. Unless I’m wrong and you guys are routinely getting 10k off Tundras, which isn’t my impression.

I think his point is, why sticker a vehicle for $60K but sell it for $51K before it even “hit regional car shows”?

It has become part of the American truck buying experience. If they stickered it at $50k, they’d never sell any because most of their market would just assume they could buy it for $40k. And sad to say, every so often they sell one at list price to someone who doesn't know better, so the dealers are incented to keep up the deception.

I'm certainly not saying it makes sense, it's ridiculous.

If we see a 70k high end tundra model it better come with 15k in cash in the glovebox.

This also gets them a tax write off because they sold at discount. Probably their biggest reason to MSRP for $60 and have non stop sales events offering 20% off.
