At 156K my 14' power steering fluid looks done. I was planing on doing multiple exchanges via turkey baster except the reservoir opening is too narrow for the baster to reach the fluid. Any ideas on an easy/best way to exchange the fluid?

I have a pneumatic brake bleeder that I shove into the reservoir.

I have also used an old syringe from the medicine cabinet and put a small diameter hose on it in the past.

Can also try to fit a small water bottle under the return nipple. Unhook the line and let the reservoir empty out.

IV tubing, or similar, attached to a 60cc syringe, or turkey baster. Why don’t you use the needle that comes on the turkey baster?

I got my baster at the dollar store. No needle or syringe. I will look for some small tubing to attach to it. Thanks.

Pull it out with a hand pump that dumps into a measuring cup. Dump out the old, fill up new to where the old stuff was and refill. Should get you right back to the full line.

I suck out about 3/4 of what’s the the reservoir. Not all of it or you will introduce air into the system. Then I fill to the full mark, drive a few days and repeat. I do this until the fluid looks new again. I do this for power steering and brake fluid. It’s always worked well for me and takes very little time/effort.

Found some tubing and got it attached to the baster. Need to do many more exchanges to get this clean.

Since draining and refilling the reservoir 5X, I think I am hearing a bit of pump whine when cold. Goes away when the truck is warm. I used MaxLife ATF. Could the reservoir screen be clogged or is this a fluid type issue?

I use MaxLife & have had no issues. How cold? How long have you had this truck?

Power steering pumps are self bleeding. Doesn’t matter if you have air in the system or not. Crank the wheel back and forth and all the air will come out. So empty the reservoir and swap it out!

40F or so. The resevoir was really dirty before I exchanged fluid. I was thinking screen is clogged, I didn't bleed it enough or fluid incompatibility? Was thinking of pulling reservoir and cleaning it well with brake cleaner.

You are doing nothing at all for your brake fluid by doing that. The brake system is returnless. The reservoir is just there to ensure there is fluid for the system and no air can get in. The only way to flush a brake system is to run new fluid all the way through the system which pushes all of the old fluid out. Typically done by bleeding from the bleeders on the calipers/wheel cylinder.

Use the top off of a spray bottle. Takes longer but available and cheap.
