Hypertech Speedometer Calibrator

Any one have this installed on their lifted, larger wheel and tire trucks? I ask because I have it on mine but when I set the cruise, my actual speed will show say 70mph, but the cruise speed will show 60mph. Normal? Also, when I'm going 65mph according the the gauges I feel like I'm not moving so I'm bbott even sure if the thing is working. If I ever get time I'm going to have the wife drive beside me and see what my actual speed is. Just figured I'd see if any one has any experience with this thing. I checked the manual online and it doesn't say much.

 

I have it. Works good. It's better to put in your tire diameter for "New Tires" vs. the size. Use the GPS on your phone to check your readings. I tweaked my diameter reading and am right on the nose. Make sure you programming correctly.

 

I've had one for a few months now. Works great after I got the tire diameter dialed in. My current tire is around 34.5". When I plugged that # in, my speedo was too fast when compared to GPS speedo on my phone. I think I dialed it back to around 33.5-33.7" and it's been spot on.

 

Yes I have it on mine. As others have said check speed with a gps app or a known good Garmin. Leave the cable attached and tucked behind the dash for easier adjustments.

Also it will only correct the Speedometer not the computer. I have my Bully Dog in and can see what the computer is putting out for a signal vs the corrected output on the speedo.

 

Thanks for the input everyone, I appreciate it. I didn't install, it was part of the package with the lift and wheels. I'll look for the cable though, maybe I just need to update the software.

 

For you guys that are using one on these..........is your cruise control still off? I have my speedometer perfect put the cruise is still off.

 

I have bully dog as well w a 3 inch left and 35inch Tires. Hyper tech won’t mess w bullydog if I install both?

My computer currently shows I m getting 17- 17.5 mpg but the fuelly app gives me 12 or 12.5.

U think hyper tech will fix Speedo and the mileage on the computer or is it just good for speed correction. I m investigating if the 274 miles I get on a full tank is correct or not.

 

No they don’t mess with each other. The hyper tech fixes the speedo and mileage only. The bully dog will show you what the computer thinks your doing.
In other words the hyper tech is down stream of the bully dog in signal path.

After rereading your post it sounds like your 12.5 mpg is more accurate. That is close to the mpg and miles till empty my truck shows me.

 

12-13 sounds right to me too. Thats the best Tundra can do w lift and heavy tires.
I still dont understand why computer shows 17-18 though. It must be drunk.

 

Yeah that seems a bit high. I have only driven a stock Tundra once and forgot to look at the mpg readout. I think the best I got was driving down I5 at 55mph pulling our quad trailer I got it to show 16.something. I was going under the speed limit waiting for my brother to catch up to us for almost 2.5 hours.

 

Kinda late to the game on this thread. I just installed the hyper tech on my truck. Using the Waze App as GPS it’s dead on...however, my truck now reads 600miles for ’Distance to empty’ vs. the usual 400miles.

anyone experience that problem?

 

I installed a Hypertech and work great with 34.7 tires then I installed 4.88 gears a removed it. I ended up reinstalling it because I was around + 3to4 mph over @ 65 mph. Took a little time but you can't just put in 4.88 in there program for new gear size, you have to downsize your new tire size and if I remember correctly it ended up something like 32.6 because Toyota speed is not determined by the drive shaft but by the speed sensor at the wheel.

And as I remember I had to put in the Metric size in for stock tire and standard for the new tire size.

 

Yep, just had the same happen. It's just resetting the DTE calculation and should go back to normal after a tank or two.

 

I put in the metric size originally for old and new and it was pretty close read about 2mph fast vs GPS. I then used the standard sizes to get the ratio where I thought it needed to be, and on the third shot it was dead on balls accurate.

 

Are there any speedo calibration tools for new Tundras that don’t require a PC? Looking for a standalone tool since I have Mac computers.

 

I've never found anything. I tried to get Hypertech's software running on my Mac with Wine Bottler and some other virtualization software and it didn't work very well, but I didn't try going with a full Windows 10 VM. That may have worked. I ended up stealing my wife's Windows laptop to get the programming done.

 

So here’s an odd one. I bought my truck with a DSI conversion done on it, which included a Hypertech calibration. I never looked inside the box I was given, until this week, when I bought new tires, and needed to do a calibration. I had no idea how the calibration tool work, and was surprised to see only a USB cable in the box. So I did a little research, and found out I needed to tear the dash apart and access the module. No worries, except when I did, I found nothing that looked like the Hypertech product! Attached is a picture of what I found, there is nothing to plug a USB cable into... The white connector in the lower left plugs into the circuit board. The black connector above and slightly to the right of this plugs into the back of the instrument panel, as does the white connector under the circuit board. Crazy...

 

If you completely remove the harness and circuit board, there’s nothing else? The stock white connector was plugged into the back of the instrument panel or the board? Something does look screwy, but I’m not taking apart my dash to see what mine looks like lol

 

usb plugs into a small black box, should be somewhere in there... also recommend leaving the usb plugged in to the calibrator and routed down somewhere so you don't have to take the whole dash apart anytime you need to update it.

 

There are two white connectors in the picture. The one in the lower left plugs into the green circuit board. The one just below the circuit board plugs into the back of the instrument panel.

There was no small black box, nor the black male connector showing in the middle of the harness in the picture.

 

Thats really odd...
looking at your pic it kinda looks like the middle connector is in that upper gap, kinda looks like some wires going in.

 

I think that circuit board is an older design maybe?
Mine didn’t come with that piece at all. Only the harness with the two large connectors (one into back of instrument cluster, the other into the original harness) and the small black connector spliced into it. Then the small black box plugs into that connector, and the USB plugs into the black box (which I left plugged in to be able to make adjustments until it was all dialed).

 

yea the circuit board version seems to be an older design.
Mine was also just the T-harness, the black module box and the USB cable.

 

You might be on to something... I wasn’t into pulling and tugging when I got in the dash, and they may have pushed that black box behind the foam.

 

Just dug it out, they actually tucked it behind some ducting, just to the right of the metal bracket that is used to secure the instrument panel.

 

So now that you’ve found it, plug the USB cable in and route it down to the kick panel so you have easy access to it later on.

That's the older style kit. I bought one secondhand off another member and it had the circuit board, but newer models don't.

Yep, did that, I’m not taking my dash apart again. Although it was much faster this time.

 

As i remember i did rap my box in bubble rap so i didn't get any unwanted dash noises.
