    Hi guys!
    Toyota

... today after 2 weeks from my trip to Florida, I started my tundra and under the hood their is a strange noise (rattle) loud-moderate-some times you can’t hear it, I would say. It first did it when cold started. 30-45 seconds. Know it is continuous, when shifted to drive a little harder sounds. It does have oil. The mechanic placed the scanner to check for misfires. However it did not have a misfire at the present. But, stated that sometime in past it did in cylinder 5 and 6. I am going crazy about it . He told me he would need the vehicle for a day. To inspect it. I have read a couple of post. Can’t figure out which to believe. So I would like to get the help of you all. Also it does not have the check engine light on thanks to GOD!

    How many miles?
    When was it done last?
    Should be done every 75-100k

Can you record it and play it here? You might be able to pinpoint it by taking a long screwdriver and touching it to different areas with your ear pressed against the handle.

I can record it. Honestly, I don’t know when the timing chain was done as I am not only one who has owned it. I know for a fact it has high mileage 250k. I will record and upload the video in a few minutes. Honestly guys I am desperate.

It’s actually a Belt, and not a chain. And to be honest, even a belt that is ready to break does not make any noise. My money is on an exhaust manifold leak. Either a loose manifold bolt, or a cracked manifold.

All I would ask is; is there a decline in performance? A sound like this could go on for ever, and never amount to anything. Tundra engines have some pretty crazy sounds, and most amount to nothing in the end.

That I could tell honestly no. But, I would like to know. Because I do long travel. Also, this sometimes is my work truck. So I depend in it as well

I’m not sure myself. For the first couple of seconds I thought it was the crankshaft bearing, but since it’s intermittent and hollow sounding it’s kind of hard to tell exactly what’s causing it. Sorry I can’t be of more help.

But, what is that interior of the engine or could it be something from the external part? Another thing that would be helpful if is they where to resolve the issue. Or had someone else experienced the same issue, let me know.

It s interesting you say that, but the fact is my 07 5.7 dc tundra idles like a deisal, and it just so happens to be common property of that particular engine.
Well it stands to reason that before a long travel situation, an engine analisis is warranted. Obd2 scanners provide the required data to determine/solve your situation. Sorry if if it doesnt.

The hollow sound is what’s confusing to me; especially since it’s intermittent. I tend to think it could be one of the external components. I would still take a stethoscope to it or use a long screwdriver as I suggested.

It gets louder in drive? Does the frequency of the noise increase with an increase in RPMs?

A Mecanic placed the Obd2 as well he couldn’t find a reason for it after he performed the test. He told me “I don’t know” he stated that I will have to let the truck in the shop for him to check even more.

Yes it does. Well sometimes, because the other thing is that is stops making it. And once it idles it starts again. It depends what it wants to do.

I’m still unsure of the source. Hopefully someone more knowledgeable that’s run into a something similar can help.

That does not sound like the higher pitched tapping of valvetrain parts. Loose bolt somewhere could explain the intermittent nature of it. It only started tapping when the rpm's settled down after starting. You won't get any codes for this sort of thing. Even if it were a failing bearing or tensioner. Get the old auto stethescope out (or use a piece of garden hose) and try to pinpoint the location of the noise. Then check the associated parts in that area. Does the tapping speed up with engine speed? Maybe there's something inside that motor, and it's knocking, cause it wants to get out.

I have had this exact sound on intermittent cold starts recently. Not every one.
Mine lasts for 3-5 seconds and goes away.

Just throwing this out there for grins: My truck had a slight chirp on cold start ups in cold weather for the last few years. It would go away once the truck was warmed after a few minutes.

Replaced the 2nd Timing Belt (170k miles) and also a New Fan Bracket/Pulley and no longer does the chirp exist. Puurrrrr!

The old Fan Bracket/Pulley has some bearings inside and once it was removed and when turned by Hand with an ear to the sound one could hear significant grinding inside. I learned this by reading reviews on the Aisin Fan Bracket.

I can imagine those ball bearings getting all gnarly inside and making a racket if they deteriorated much more. Just a guess.

Same thing happen to me for 6-7 month. But know it keeps on going. It first did it when cold started. Yesterday did not shut off sometimes it would get lighter. For example like I posted previously, it idled and it went from low to high (sound) then I put it in drive it would get louder then for a couple of minutes lighter. Once I was driving it will get again louder then lighter that is my issue I can’t understand it.

    My question is the following:
Could you hear it in the front and back end of the motor even in the side. Also, sometimes in the low part. This is without the use of the right equipment to hear (stethoscope) I mean could a noise vary in an engine. Making it where you could not tell where it is coming from. For example if I where to hear it more from the back lower part, could it be from a part coming from the front. Because it is inside the hood, and I just can’t tell where is at.
