Assistance with Tundra stereo

Trying to learn the ins and outs of my Tundra. It's a 2020 SR5 I just purchased. I didn't spend anytime with the dealer going over this stuff as it was late and I just wanted to get home. I have attached an image of what it looks like when I turn it on. It has all kinds of crazy options that I have never seen before or even know if or how it affects the sound of what I can do to make the sound optimal. It doesn't sound great...almost sounds more like cheap speakers but not sure. Just trying to figure out if I have a decent system or should consider upgrading and if I do upgrade what my best route is.

Definitely aftermarket look up model online

 

Take a picture of underneath the passenger front seat to see if there is an amplifier. I find it a little odd someone would drop over $1000 on a new head unit only to trade in the truck...

 

Right they might have sold stock stereo and stripped of all the after market speakers and amps. But who knows

 

If they ran 3 pair of RCA cables form the HU to under the passenger seat, one of the hardest parts of upgrading the stock audio is already done for you.

I agree with @Kanobi13 they may have pulled the aftermarket speakers.
Pull a door panel off and see what speakers are in the doors.
If it looks like this, you have stock speakers..



This video will help you get the door panel off, it isn't that hard.
Be careful prying out the window control, use something plastic, the door panels scratch VERY EASILY..
2020 is the same as 2014 and up...

I was told the guy decided he wanted a Crewmax. Also has an aftermarket hard shell bed cover. I will check under the seat as soon as I can. I thought it was an aftermarket thing. I am just surprised he doesn't have better sound and thinking it may be how I have the settings.

The amp is an Audison 4.5. I checked and it seems to be a good amp just going by the price of $4-$500 it looks like. Wondering if maybe he had the cheap stock speakers but not sure.

Good to know! I have the GM of the dealership calling me to see if maybe the speakers may have been removed. Probably wouldn't say so if they did but who knows.

 

The specific head model is a Kenwood eXcelon DMX1057XR. Surprised to see the price of that thing when I looked it up. Either I have settings way our whack or they swapped out the speakers because the sound is just not what it should be with that amp and stereo.

 

Yessir. 1057XR. If my speakers turn out to not be so great I would welcome any input on speakers and sub-woofer although not sure where I'd put the sub-woofer as I have the underseat storage in the back that I'd like to keep.

I did find the manual on the Kenwood website so going through that this weekend. Pretty amazing piece of equipment. Apparently I can watch movies!

 

If you don’t mind spending some money. I would recommend some focal plug and play speakers. I just put some in and it sounds good with factory stereo. But now that I added the

Will check them out. It's been so long since I have bought any automotive audio equipment I don't have the slightest idea of what good, better and best even costs.

I have a DMX907s in my tundra. It took some tweaking of the settings to get it to sound decent and it's a vast improvement over stock. That gave me the bug though and now I'm replacing all of the speakers, the amp, and adding a sub and another amp.

I'd reset the head unit back to the factory settings and play with the sound effect and the x-over portions of the head unit controls. I brought the front down a few DB. Also, be sure to adjust the EQ on the head unit. I have a nice swoop up in the lower range tapering back down to 0db in the highs. The truck has a lot of highs and not much low end with the stock speakers.

If I read this correctly then you have an audison amp, which is pretty good. I doubt you have stock speakers. It shouldn't be too hard to get it sounding acceptable. If you need specifics, I'd be happy to share my settings but they won't be apples for apples because I'm still rocking the stock amp and speakers for another week.

 

Audison makes good amps. If they made effort to put in a nice amp, I'm sure they upgraded speakers also. Maybe the guys at dealership or other customers messed with settings during test drives?? Try to play around with the settings. Or maybe even take it to a car stereo shop to have them tune it if you're not familiar with it.

 

Thanks and I agree...if he put all that money into it I am sure he got good speakers. Unless some cheeseball at the dealership swapped them out when going over the truck which wouldn't surprise me. I don't have much faith in any dealership service department for anything.

 

Or he moved the aftermarket speakers to the new truck and put the OEM ones back in.

 

Could be but I'd be surprised he didn't take it all. Seeing how much that receiver costs I sure would have saved the stock receiver and swapped it all out before final trade.

 

Agree, if he took the time to pull out aftermarket speakers...why not pull the radio and amp also? But who knows, people do strange things sometimes??

 

Welcome. Looks like a good surprise if you were expecting a stock stereo. The oe ones are all garbage. A quick look through the door panel speaker grill with a flashlight could yield much info. Also it should be easy to find the eq settings in the head unit. If you’re not comfortable with a custom setup it will have presets. Usually named by music genre. I’m partial to “rock”when using them.

 

Thanks and that’s exactly what I did and it does sound much better now. I just went through the different presets till I found the one I liked. Man, Down By The River by Neil Young sounded incredible cranked up! I’d like to get some deeper bass like my (now my daughter’s) Acura has. The bass is good but it just doesn’t have that deep feeling like a blanket wrapping around you. May be missing a sub?? Anyhow gonna check it out all out today and see what I’ve got.
