Forest Creek is a good school. She likes teaching and likes RRISD, even though this year was been hard with everything going on

Canyon Lake, the Guadalupe river in New Braunfels, Zilker Park/Red Bud Isle and Lake Travis in Austin are all great places to take the lab swimming. We used to take our Danes up to Red Bud every summer before covid, it's a great park and they're off leash friendly.

Hey! Welcome to Texas! I am one town over in Georgetown. Where about in Round Rock are you moving to? East or West of I35? The food here is amazing. I think I gained 10 pounds the first year that I moved here :) You have to try Rudy's, Torchy's, and Whataburger (and there are others) :)

If you need any help with anything, reach out :)

    Edit:
I see that your kids are going to Forest Creek Elementary. That school is 9 miles from my house :)

ohh... and now you can go to Quick Trip for your fuel. They sell 90 octane ethonal-free fuel (its about $2.30 a gallon now). There is one going in near the Dell Diamond. That's off of hwy 79 near the elementary school.

Fredericksburg is a nice little town. Lots of German influence, though not as heavily German as it once was. It's tourist town for sure. Hundreds and hundreds of B&Bs. I live not far west of there and I absolutely try to avoid going to town on weekends. :D Enchanted Rock has been mentioned, and I would highly recommend it. You need to get away some clear evening, and go to Enchanted Rock or somewhere about 100 or so miles west of the I-35 corridor to see the biggest brightest stars you'll ever find anywhere. Farther west, the South Llano River State Park, south of Junction, is a nice park for camping. Also, there are a number of places in the Hill Country to watch the bats come out after sundown during summer months. The bats migrate south for the winter. A good educational summer outing for the kids. One place I can recommend for that would be the old railroad railroad tunnel south of Fredericksburg on Old San Antonio Road. While you're there, grab a burger at the Alamo Springs Cafe. And maybe you've heard of Luckenbach.

Peaches were mentioned, but to tell the truth, a lot of peach orchards have given way to vineyards over the past decade. Wineries are everywhere around Fredericksburg!

Really, there are lots of things to do in the Hill Country. Be sure to find yourself a good map of the area. Here's a start .. https://hill-country-visitor.com/hill-country-map/

Right next door. Less than a hundred yards. I used to take my grandkids there when they were little. They're all grown now. Makes me feel kinda old.

I’ve lived in RR for a few years. The convenience is awesome for local shopping and a decent drive into Austin for work when we used to do that. Austin has a lot of newsletters to give you an idea of things going on around town.

Round Rock Donuts is sugary if you like it like that. Sarena’s on mayes street gas our all time favorite vanilla sourcream donut. We like their donuts better overall!

BBQ - Rudys is solid overall and is all over the place. Brothertons bbq in Pflugerville is fantastic as well as John Muellers formerly black box bbq. Waiting for his new place to open. If you can make the drive, check out Snows, blacks, and smittys bbq.

I really loved McKinney falls for hiking. Walnut Creek is a convenient hiking spot too. Emma Long Park was my favorite to hike with our dogs. Austin is known for having a lot of options for hiking. Barton Springs has a natural spring, the water is like 67 degrees all year long. Definitely a touristy spot and local favorite. There’s an underground “space cavern” tour of a local cave I’ve been meaning to check out with my wife and kid.

Marble Falls has a unique arts scene as well as fantastic wineries. Fredericksburg has excellent wineries as well.

Texas has a RICH craft beer scene. Tons of local bars, pubs, and breweries. Adelberts, Oskar Blues, 4th tap, and cellis are all amazing. Kid friendly for bars as well as dog friendly. The kid part took some time getting used but it seems normal now.

Local gyms in RR are golds, orange theory, multiple cross fit gyms, and “the garage gym” on gattis school road. Jim the owner bought the place and kept the existing skate rink for roller derby, villeyball use, and added a complete gym.

if you’re into shooting, point blank of RR is my go to now. Free gun rentals, super clean inside, and excellent customer service.

I’ve lived in Austin mueller area, north austin, hutto, and round rock. RR is my favorite overall. It’s growing super fast like Pflugerville because of what it offers overall.

Let me know if you want to meet up for a beer sometime!

Awesome list! Truly thank you so much! Haven’t heard anything about wineries yet, so the wife will really appreciate that one!

As for a beer, sounds like there are a few of us that should all meet up once I get my butt out there. I’ll let this thread know once we make it out there. Should be the 2nd half of March.

+1 hidden falls if you like offroading. Mild to wild. I used to dirt bike there all the time when I lived in San antonio. Personally I don't ike Austin as its the most liberal place in Texas, but compared to the bay area idk. I've seen everything from tube buggies to stock trucks at hidden falls.

I'm a native texan lived there 35 years and have to say, there are alot of racist rednecks but there's a bunch of good people too. Don't know you're ethnicity but San Antonio and Austin are a melting pot in my experience. The outskirts towns you find more racism/ hillbillies. Offroad and overlanding is NOTHING like what you're used to 100 agreed and not necessarily in a good way. Mexican food i have to disagree is phenomenal. Have to know where to look. My advice , find a Hispanic friend and have them show you the spots lol when I lived in San antonio the best places were hole in the walls and many didn't have menus in English. I'd go with my roommate at the time as he spoke Spanish. Now I do the same with my wife lol san antonio go to rosarios, but downtown not the midtown one. They have great tripas there. La fogota is another san antonio one. Both have mariachi live bands. Those two are the nice sit down places. All the others are oing to be hole in the walls that may not be well known. Tink a taco is another favorite of mine that is cheap and hole in the wall. No one has mentioned i don't think but schliterbaun for the kinds. Fun water park. If you're into dirt biking as previously mentioned hidden falls, but a hidden gem south of SA is ZARS ranch . Only singletrack there so nothing for the tundra, but awesome dirt biking. Padre island is about 5 hours or so I think, noting compared to socal beaches but its got good fishing and is a beach nonetheless. Galveston island is fun moody gardens the kids will like. Also a train museum there and an old sail ship called the Alyssa. Thats cool for kids. Kermit san dunes are in west Texas they're pretty fun , nothing else notable in west Texas really lol (spent 12 years there ) need to go to the alamo in San antonio. Riverwalk san antonio is a must do though the restaurants there are overpriced and overated , still fun to do. I like the bars on the Riverwalk. If you're a drinker , Fiesta ,niosa, oyster bake in san antonio are all fun. Think Hispanic Mardi gras but last like a month lol. Institute of western cultures is a cool place for the kids, again in San antonio. Also tower of the America's is fun and there's an observatory and restaurant at the top. Like the space needle. Become a spurs fan. Also deer hunting in the hill country is world renowned , by a rifle and find a lease lol hog hunting is awesome too and abundant. Thats all I can think of at the moment sorry for all the typos, posting on my phone.

Definitely SA has way better food and culture! And I totally agree with the rednecks comments. There's tons of great people out here! That's why I chose here over the political bs of California! I truly was surprised when we first came out here by the kindness of most of the people. I had to take a step back and tell myself that they aren't weird, because we aren't used to random people asking how we're doing, lol!

When they first opened it up, they had a problem with feral hogs on the toll road. Nothing like doing a 100mph and hitting a hog the size of a Volkswagen.

I'm a Mighty Fine Burgers and Fries fan - there's a really nice one near the Ikea in Round Rock.

The Wahlburg German Restaurant north of Georgetown is worth the drive if you and your family like authentic German food. Make sure you make a reservation.

Welcome to Texas - there's a lot a Xenophobes around here but they are mostly in the smaller towns like mine. If the conversation with a local starts with them telling you their family has been living here for 140 years, it's best just to walk away and start talking to somebody else.

Round Rock has been growing for a long time now and they seem to be doing it right. You'll be in a great place, kind of in the middle of everything. Dallas to the North, Austin and San Antonio to the South, Houston to the east and the Hill Country to the West with a shit-ton of the best BBQ in the world all around you.

    Welcome home!
