I for one as a Toyota tech, am not happy that all Toyota vehicles will be Hybrid only powerplants by 2026. They are shooting for 2024 but its doubtful that's gonna happen.
The Taco 3.5 is a big let down, many engine issues.
The Sienna and Venza already 2.5 liter hybrid only. No more 3.5 option. All other car/small suv will be similar soon.

I love my 2020 Tundra and unless this new Hybrid only Tundra is a homerun I wont be upgrading

I love when people hate on turbos and say they won’t drive a vehicle with one, but how many millions of turbo vehicles are out there running just fine for many miles

Turbos aren't inherently bad, they're great in my wife's Audi Q5, but a tow vehicle the Q5 ain't. Drive any turbo (like my wife's Q5) in sport mode engaging those turbos and as the RPMs go up and the turbos spin more than 100 times the RPMs of the engine. Fuel economy drops like a stone to the bottom of a lake. Engine life drops right with it.

Guess what happens when you tow or have a heavy payload? Engine RPMs go way up and so do Turbo RPMs and heat. Not saying a small displacement engine can't do it, or even do it without more torque. But it's more than naive to assume it can do it for as long or as well as a large displacement engine.

A few years ago, Honda was considered by many the best builder of automobile engines (and all other engines)in the world. A couple of years ago, it was lauded for finally introducing a high output, small displacement turbo. A couple years after that, their reputation for reliable automobile engines is in the gutter...compared to where they were.

I'm keeping my '17 for a long time!
What's the deal with the hybrids being so noisy? I walked by a highlander and thought something was wrong with it.
Does the Venza have a good report card so far?

It's probably the Direct Injection injectors making the noise. They are loud compared to our port injection injectors. My wife has a 20 RAV 4 with dual injection and you can hear the difference between the direct and port injectors.

I've wondered about the 5.0L hybrid engine from the Toyota Century for a while. Hybrid version cranks out 425 HP, 430Torque and gets 32 MPGs in a heavy (5,400 lbs) sedan.

I don't think anyone is questioning if a V8 is better at towing than a V6TT (it's not) - the question is which market are people truly in. Myself I know I don't NEED a truck, so a turbo engine would work for 95% of the time - I'll take the better fuel economy for that time and suffer through those times I'm loaded down. And I trust Toyota far more than Ford when it comes to the reliability of a turbo engine. The V6TT is the right compromise, it's not overly strained when unloaded so it can stay fuel efficient but it has the capability to tow or haul 1/2 ton levels. It's the same idea as gas engines in HD trucks - sure diesel engines tow 20k lbs a hell of a lot better, but the gas engine can do it and in return you don't have emission stuff waiting to break.

I get wanting a V8 for fun, but does anyone need the latest vehicle for a fun vehicle? And those that are towing 5k lbs and above consistently are likely looking at HD trucks since they are far superior (read:safer) at towing. I see Toyota lately going after the lifetime Toyota owner who is looking to upgrade from their Camry and get something that can tow/haul - it doesn't need to be the best at that, what it does unloaded is more important to those buyers since that's what the truck will do the most.

And Honda's issues lately go deeper than their engine - dig into their vehicles and you see they're not in that top echelon of reliability anymore, the turbo engine issues are a side effect of that, not the opposite.

When they announced the ad spot I thought “of coarse they didn’t say they’re releasing the next tundra. As soon as they say that everyone and there mother will be pushing out rumors about what it will be (just like us) and it will kill the interest in the vehicle. When it comes out as a surprise all the automotive reporters will have the info of what the truck actual is and won’t report rumors.

After watching the ad spot I wouldn’t be surprised if the have a hand throttle/brake equipped truck for her to drive off in the end.

Or on a more cynical note, maybe they realized they missed the mark on the new tundra and had to come up with a new ad spot to buy time to fix they’re mistake.

    Another thought I had

How easy would it be for OEMs to make factory direct cars for paraplegics. We’ve been using drive by wire for 10+ years, all a gas pedal is doing is sending an electrical signal, they could use a paddle shifter like setup. The options are basically unlimited when they’re doesn’t have to be a mechanical linkage.

Using the automatic braking technology we already have there doesn’t have to be a mechanical connection to the brake system, it could also just be an electrical signal. Just like the new c8 corvettes which no longer have a physical connection to the brakes it’s just a pump controlled by a computer that gets an input from the brake pedal.

It would be really easy for the OEM to change say paddle shifters from a digital to analog signal, they could even leave the gas and brake pedal so they could be used by other people instead of only being setup up for a paraplegic.

Even 2018+ tundra have all the hardware and technology they need to do this, the only thing that is missing is the controls.

I disagree with none of what you said. (except if you're trying to say a TTV6 is a better towing engine than a naturally aspirated V8)

I choose to drive a Tundra specifically because of it's reliable 5.7L with a smooth 6 speed transmission, and 4.30 rear axle. If I wanted tech and turbos, I would've bought a Ford. If I wanted tech and power, a RAM. If I wanted sheer power, a GMC. If I wanted to get a 3/4 or 1 ton, I would've bought a GMC.

This is what I meant about the Tundra being a "niche" vehicle in an earlier post, Toyota currently makes a vehicle for what I want. The Tundra ain't Burger King, you can't have it your way. If they make it the way you want it..I'll be moving on.

You're bang on with it being made for a portion of truck buyers only, and I think they're changing those targets slightly. Will it be more capable, most likely, will it be much better at those capabilities maybe not (toss in better rear leafs in the current gen, and maybe 6 bolt hubs, and payload would go up significantly). 6 or 8 really doesn't make a difference, the Ram is just as smooth even if it shifts more often, and even 10 I don't find the Ford to not be smooth I just don't see the point of 10 over 8. The 4.30 is nice, but it'snot the be all end all - if the transmission is geared right you could have a 1:1 rear gear and still have tons of torque. With the big 3 they offer multiple rear gears with no transmission changes so the highest ratio is best for torque, but with Toyota only having 1 they could have a 3.23 and it be just as good as a 4.30 with the right transmission gears.

And for what I want it would be quite different, but I don't want what 90% of the population (most of which are car buyers that Toyota wants to entice into a truck) would like in in a truck. A supercharged V8 hybrid is just overkill for commuters, but man would it ever be fun to have.

    see sig for mods.....
I looked long and hard at the Supra as a replacement for my much loved 20 year long affair with a BMW M3.

I drove every performance sport coupe on the market over a year before making my decision. Despite the BMW heritage the car was brilliant. Ultimately though it was my #1 for driving dynamics and experience I decided against it due to 4 factors. 1. Plain Jane BMW dash, 2. Terrible gauges and lack of performance info. A Sports car with 1980 gm granny gauge info? come on.... 3. The deal killer was the horrendous buffeting if you tried to drive with windows down. 4. Lack of manual

I ended up with a 2020 Mustang Bullitt and love the heck out of the car. First Ford EVER. I was the anti Mustang guy. So much my dad refused to believe me until I pulled up to his house in it.

No idea where this is going. Oh yeah, Toyota doesn't chase performance. The Supra is a sublime performance car, but with flaws. IMO if you can live with a few things, it sets the bar. I am TRULY hoping the new Tundra does the same and that Toyota will have Performance and HD derivatives to the Tundra line. The current truck split the difference, but it is 2021, and a single model with variations in trim and content is not going to do more than maintain.

**Edit here is a pic with my Tundra.

The Mustang 5.0 (or better) with a manual trans is one of two Fords I would buy, just so much fun to drive. Great car.

“However, the most highlight is a push start/stop button which comes with a fingerprint scanner. This helps the car identify the driver and preset settings according to personal preferences.”

This sucks for anyone that works with their hands. Its not unusual for me to not even be able to unlock my phone and tablet after a day at work. All it takes is one splinter, cut, burn, blood blister, etc.

I can't stand "features" like that. Even the new wireless keys can be a PITA if the little battery within runs out. I carry one for my wife's car and it doesn't contain a mechanical key, it's a waterproof dongle on my keychain. Works great when there's power - it's a useless piece of plastic after 2 years. Costs $150 to replace, must visit dealer to have them read your car's computer.

I’ve been driving around my sisters Prius prime and it’s got this gigantic touch screen that controls everything. Incredibly annoying. IMO it is essentially like operating a phone while driving. You have to take your eyes off the road in order to adjust your climate controls, radio, what have you. How it’s not considered distracted driving is beyond me. There’s separate buttons for the temperature but even those are useless as there’s no tactile feedback, impossible to have muscle memory to remember where it is, and can’t distinguish up from down.

If the 2022 Tundra has something like that it’s going to be a strong pass for me.
