Brake Issues...NO BUENO

    @LOTSOFTOYS please help me understand this situation...if you can.

    OK, so i posted something about this a few weeks ago and got some comedic responses and some responses that seemed legit. I can't find that post so i'm starting a new one.

    I bought a 2017 Double Cab TRD with 29 miles on in on January 31.

    The night I brought it home i noticed the brakes weren't quite as sensitive as my '16 Tacoma nor my '12 Tundra. I asked around to other Tundra owners and got the response that you have to get on them a little harder due to the 5.7 and the weight of the vehicle. I took this as a legit response and kept driving it. Not long after having it i noticed that when i was at a stop light i had to really get on the brake to hold it still...again, "the 5.7 is powerful" seemed to suffice. Not long after that i noticed i was having to reengage the brake to keep it still.

    It's progressively gotten worse so i'm now at 5000 miles and ready for a check up. But, before that i take it in to get an alignment at my Off Road shop where the lift was installed.

    The owner, Jason, at RSG drives it and tells me that he noticed what i was talking about and they lifted it up to depress the brakes to see what was going on.

    Guess what? The front brakes (fully depressed) aren't even trying to depress!!!

    Toyota allowed the truck to leave the lot without front brakes even operating. Seems there should be some sort of quality assurance check prior to leaving the lot. Anyone agree?

    I'm now at the dealer and hopefully they can either fix the brake issues or give me a rental until they can, which they are already trying to back track and say it's "not immobile, so we might not compensate for a rental car." I call BS!!

    Anyone else have this issue (I hope not)?

    Negative over here. Brakes work fine. Sure the car is not "immobile", but needs outside assistance to stop :rofl:
    Glad you're fixing it on time before something bad could have happened; that would have been a lawsuit waiting to happen.

    If you can't stop... you can't really go. I'd have to say that pretty much makes it immobile. And you put 5000 miles on your truck in a month?!?! :confused:

    That's crazy....haven't heard of that problem at all. May just be a bad one (then takes not the truck)

    Me too. It's gonna get sorted one way or the other. I just need as little interference in my schedule as i can muster. I still have to drive to Grand Junction from Denver (about 4-5 hours if the snow slows down) tonight for a meeting in the morning.

    Just got word from the Service Manager....they can't figure out what the issue is and Toyota corporate is scratching their heads.

    Not sounding encouraging, but the good news is that they are getting me a rental car so that i can take care of my business life.

    glad to hear you got a rental, some insurance carriers will have built in coverage such as: $30 a day for max of 12 days for rental vehicles.

    Yep. Toyota has already covered 4 days of rentAL and I "upgraded" to this BADASS Chevy Traverse for $10 a day only because we have a winter weather advisory in affect for the remainder of the day

    Well since it's been relying on only the rear brakes I would make sure they change those out too and the rotors. You want a fresh start.

    This is a safety issue that Toyota needs to address. Press the fact that braking is very hard and could lead to an accident and a huge lawsuit for their dealership and Toyota if an accident was to occur with them knowing that there was a problem with your brakes. This is not to be taken lightly. And yes you would have to engage a lawsuit if you were to wreck because of the problem. Your insurance would not cover you knowing that you were driving with a vehicle with a brake problem that the dealership knew about.

    Glad you got the rental car and hope they work out the issue.

    I agree 100%.

    I was implying that a lawsuit is not what I'm looking for, just total reset on the braking system. I've called 3 dealers today to find the most pliable service manager and surprisingly Stevinson was the only one without resistance.

    Now that Toyota Corporate is involved I don't expect any further resistance.

    Good news. Let's hope they find the fix and you get your truck back soon. Guessing is a malfunctioning part somewhere.

    At first I thought it would be a hose issue but I'm sure one of the first things they checked was the fluid and it most likely would've been empty or you would've noticed if it was a leak. :notsure:

    Hell maybe even a plugged hose, but highly unlikely

    My first thought was air in the line due to the intermittent issue, but now it seems much more than that.

    I REALLY want it fixed but I'm almost as interested in what the problem is now

    Exactly what I thought, but after you said corporate was involved and the techs couldn't figure it out....that theory went out the window, besides it seems too early for something as simple as air in the tubes causing problems. Hell it seems too early for ANYTHING period.

    The good news is your braking performance should feel awesome once this is fixed. :thumbsup:

    If it is both sides of your front brakes not working, the issue is most likely between the master cylinder and the ABS unit, inclusively.

    Please do let us know the results, and yes, your rear rotors and pads deserve some attention if they've been doing all your braking.

    It boggles my mind that they cannot troubleshoot this in a matter of minutes though, loosening fittings from the master cylinder downward with the brake applied to see if there is hydraulic pressure, and where that ends.

    Agreed. I'm certainly not a brake expert but i knew from the beginning they felt soft, but was told by numerous people (that had not driven it) that it sounded normal. Really i only noticed it when i was sitting at a light and the truck would start to slowly inch forward until i reengaged the brake. At that point it would reset and be fine. I'm a little embarrassed i drove it for 5000 miles before the actual problem was discovered. It makes me feel like i'm either in denial or just lacking enough knowledge to troubleshoot my own truck. Bottom line, it's getting fixed and i have already demanded rear pads and rotors being swapped out too.

    Funny thing is i originally posted on here about the issues were minimized by others. Not because there was any ill intention, just that nobody believed that there might be an issue. After all...IT'S A FREAKIN TOYOTA! We don't have problems with Toyota Tundras.....that's why we have them

    Not specific to Toyota, but I've seen some pretty wild manufacturing defects in new trucks over the years. Including a cylinder head missing a drilled oil gallery. Anything mass-produced can and will have a problem now and then, though I do believe that Toyota does a better job than most of minimizing these errors.
    Unfortunately, this makes some (including dealership staff) think there are never issues, and never could be.

    I can't imagine how big of a smile will be on your face once the front brakes are actually working. I'm glad you live in a small town, but you also live around some pretty good mountain passes. Shocking the rears only sufficed.

    One area that I have always been impressed with is the braking power of the Toyota's I've owned (99',00, 14' Tacomas...06 limited 4Runner, 12' Tundra). What I haven't ever been impressed with is the rotors. All my Taco's needed rotors way early. Most recently was the 14' Taco at 20k the rotors were showing no love for smooth braking. The 4Runner was a limited, so it had the biggest rotors available and my 12 Tundra was awesome.

    I agree with the others, something with MC or ABS system, it is under warranty so let them figure it out and hopefully they replace the rear rotors/pads since they have been doing 100% of your braking.

    Just for future references, if you ever need help or a tow, I can't count how many times I have went up to your area to help out Jeepers with broken down Heeps coming off Wheeler Lake. No reason to drive an unsafe vehicle ever. Us Colorado Peeps have to stick together. :thumbsup:

    I heard from the service manager and they've ordered a new master cylinder and should have it ready by Tuesday at noon.

    They are also compensating me for my upgraded rental to AWD due to the storm rolling in and comping my parts I ordered from the parts department last week.

    Bad news...the brakes weren't working properly.
    Good news ...they are taking care of me!!
