Had my 2020 Limited CM for a little over a month and still can't get the CP to work with my phone. Checked the phone in a showroom Avalon and it works fine. Tried the dealer technician's phone in my Tundra, still didn't work. Dealer seems like they are slow-rolling replacing the HU as it could be a software issue affecting this model vehicle. But then today I check with my buddy, who bought an identical truck from the same place a few days after he saw mine, and his CP works perfect with his iphone.

I'm on hold with Toyota tech support now, but I wanted to know how many others might have had this problem. I get that they don't want to rush to replace an expensive HU if it is something that is software related, but it seems to me it must the HU itself.

Anyone have any experience with this?

Does your phone work with car play in your buddies truck? And, does your buddies phone have the same problem in your truck? (If everything works in your buddies truck and fails in yours then that is additional info to help prove that the issue is with the unit in your truck.)

Yeah, my phone works in his but his does not work in mine...so I'm (still!) on hold with Toyota to hopefully get them to tell the dealer to replace the HU.

As a side note, I do realize there are a bunch of aftermarket HUs out there that are much better, but I really wanted to keep the look of the interior as clean and stock as possible and still wanted CP and full functionality. Plus keep peace after I lifted my 07, then bought a 07 4Runner V8 and had it painted a different color, installed a lift/tires/wheels/leather/stereo...the decided I missed the extra room on the Tundra haha!

None! I tow a boat weekly
Do soft reset on your phone. Then see what happens.

Man, I am having a similar issue! I JUST bought a 2020 Tundra two days ago. My apple car play will work for literally 5 mins before it goes silent, and the speakers won’t come back on for like 15 seconds. It’s very irritating, I took it to Toyota they did a hard reset and it worked for all of 30 mins till I turned off my truck, and after turning it back on I had the same problem. It’s still under the 36k factory warranty, so I’m not too worried. I am more annoyed then anything! Please let me know if you find out what’s causing this.

I have quite a few issues with mine as well. It will suddenly change from XM to the music from my phone a lot. Also will stop playing and go silent like someone mentioned before. I have to reset it. Or unplug the phone and cycle through the modes to get it to come
    Back on.

My CarPlay has been crap after the latest iOS update. Prior, any issues were resolved with a hard restart of the JBl HU.

It used to work for me but not after the latest iOS. It is pretty much crap now. Apple really screwed the pooch on this one.

Check the build link in my signature.
Either I’m good or I’m lucky (but never both) - I’ve had no issues at all with mine.

Well look at that, they must have really botched the last update if they already have 14.4 now. I am installing as I am typing, thanks.

It's worked just fine in mine all along, with both 14.3 and 14.4.

I might agree with you on this but I still think their computers are better than PC's. It's the lesser of two evils. I've had an iPhone for almost three years and I've hated it for nearly 2-1/2 of those years. Problem is I don't know what an Android is like anymore. Damn phone company doesn't have any worthwhile upgrades (meaning free) so I'm sticking with the iPhone for now.

You bring up a good point. What I like about PC s are you can run open source software on them like Linux. Whether it be apple, or android, they are both propiatary. Android was a version of Linux, but android is googles baby now, so open source it is not. The mention of contract tracing was the final straw with me. I m slowly weaning myself from my android cell phone, and I run Pop OS Linux on my desktop puter. I ve never owned an apple product, and someday will wash my hands of android, and just use a landline for phone communication. So yea, my problem with apple carplay is that it s just another cog in the invasive mechinism of big tech.

    OP,
I have had my truck (2020 Tundra SR5 Texas Edition) for literally a week and a half. Wether I use Apple Car play or Bluetooth it’s all the same. My music will be going just fine then BOOM it will cut out. The HU says it’s still playing, but there is NO sound coming from the speakers. After around 10 to 25 seconds boom it will come back out of no where. I took it to the damn dealership 4 times... They updated my HU, made sure I updated my phone still nothing. Finally, I get fed up with them giving me the run around. I call Toyota Corp, and within 35 mins I have the head customer rep for that dealership apologizing for everything. I explain that I have 4 videos of what is going on, and send it to him. The next day I go in talk to the SAME tech who had helped me before, but this time I had the big boss with me. He muttered under his breath for a bit stating its a waste of 2grand for the dealership, because it’s not gonna fix it. The type of phone I have is the “wrong” kind. When I ask him what he meant he finally told me the truth... Basically the HU in the stock tundras 14-20 conflict with IOS. It doesn’t happen often but if you have a problem, then you are pretty much screwed. I asked if getting a new HU would actually work. He stated it wouldn’t. I told him I still wanted a new HU, because I went through all this trouble proving my case. How it was ridiculous that it was this hard to get them to do anything especially since my vehicle is still under factory warranty. My new HU will be here in a week, and supposedly Toyota Corp is going to “buy my make and model of phone (iPhone 11 Pro with IOS 14.4) to see if they can get the bottom of the situation.” Bro honestly, I hate to say it, but be a Karen. Forget the dealership, get as much evidence as you can and make a complaint to Toyota Corporation 1-800-331-4331. That’s my advice to ya! I’ll let you know if getting a new HU actually helps...

Well I have no problems with my "Apple Carplay". I can plug it in any of my current vehicles.

It's my 15 year old 60GB 4th Gen iPod [IMG] . I have nearly 40 GB of music in it and it doesn't skip a beat, quite literally.

iOS keeps getting updated while the stock HU software is pretty stagnate - that's not a recipe for compatibility.

I no longer use the stock HU but it was pretty solid for about 8 months and then just before I was planning to upgrade the HU anyway it started restarting every 10-15 mins and randomly dropping BT. These units are truly hunks of shit with little to no $ or effort put into them.

I kinda sorta agree. For me, I think it sounds great, but then again, I've put a good $1300 or so into upgrading the system. Additionally, my previous truck was a '13 F150 with the 4.2" screen, and *THAT* system was easily the WORST system I have EVER owned in ANY vehicle...so in comparison, a system that sounds decent and is *reliable* is OK with me. LOL
