    Started this afternoon
Got the drivers side off pretty easy and then came to an abrupt stop with the spark plug gaskets
Any suggestions as to the best way to get them out?

There are 4 metal tabs holding them in place in addition to being cooked into the hole from years of use.

Bend back 3 of the 4 tabs and use a hook tool to lever the donuts out. They make a special tool, but I used one I found on the side of the road. They might come out all gnarly, but thats the only way.

Leave the 4th tab in place as a proper guide for when you slot the new donut in place. Put them in proper side up. Tap down the 3 tabs and you are good to go.

I started prying without pulling the tabs and broke pieces of the hardened gasket out
Gotcha I’ll give it a go after work tomorrow evening I’ve given up tonight.
And thanks PHM I’ve been reading on here awhile and you guys are great about helping the new members out although I’m sure a lot of it is repetitive questions.

Yeah. There is a little wire ring inside those donuts. If you can hook lever that out you can get most of it. The little gnarly bits left over are inevitable. You’ll use a little knife to scape those off. Try not to gouge the metal so your new Seals actually seal. Sometimes I bust balls a little, but in the end hope to help out as much as possible. Thank you.

works great on newer intact seals. Worked pretty good on my valve covers. The rubber hard turned hard after cooking for 212k miles. Came out in pieces. Be careful not to lose any pieces down in the baffle plate.

This job is kicking my rear.
If my engine doesn’t go pop from all the debris I’ve feel like I knocked in my engine I’ll be shocked.
Also ordered the wrong washers for the bolts and wrong PCV valve I ordered the threaded one which I believe is the newer engines.
    :angrygirl:
On a good note I did get the spark plug gaskets out and went ahead and installed the drivers cover with the old PCV valve and washers until I get the correct ones.

I certainly hope to stay outta that club (lol) because after about 6 months of ownership this truck is turning out to be one of my favorites and (I’ve owned newer and nicer trucks including a 2nd gen tundra) anyway I don’t wanna kill it prematurely :(

Did the Valve Cover gasket kit not come with the new bolt washers? Perhaps you just purchased the actual gaskets..?

Yeah, be thankful you didn't have to drill out and re-tap 7 of the 18 bolt holes...

I ordered it all separately on dealer website I guess I just used the wrong part # for the bolt washers and PCV valve.
After the fact I came across a YouTube video that references a kit from a website called wits end IIRC that had everything in a kit for like $100 and I believe it’s OEM parts.

One thing I noticed doing this is that the inside of the drivers side valve cover was significantly dirtier than the passengers side.
    Any reason for this?

If those chunks make their way down to the crankcase they'll get stopped by the oil pump pickup strainer.

When you change your oil they will fall out through the drain and vex you no more.

Probably because the PCV was clogged and the ensuing back up of contaminants were left there instead of getting sucked up into the Throttle Body to be re-burned.

After the retaining tabs are bent back, mine went in relatively easily. Then bent the tabs back down over them. A socket of appropriate size and some tapping would certainly help to seat them.
