Supercharger long term reliability?

My assumption is to drive it harder than the young kid. I’ll let you know how it goes.

 

Anyone towing with a Supercharged Tundra for long periods? How long have you been towing and what weights...boat,camper....Space Shuttle ....ect . Has it been a reliable platform?

 

I'm a big advocate of supercharging the tundra, and havent seen any detrimental effects (besides cost) that would keep me away from it. Probably half the time I have a trailer hooked up, though usually only 4000lbs or so pulling my Can Am and relatively short trips of 100-200 miles. Which towing that much requires almost no thought, I can maintain the speed limit in 5th gear up most steep grades. The last time I towed something heavy was I drove 600 miles towing my friends trailer with his buggy, which I would guess was around 10k and power wise the truck was fine (though I wouldn't recommend towing that much in general).

I'd say I've towed a lot, and always in the mountains. The supercharger makes a huge difference, what used to be 3rd or 4th gear and going slow is now 5th or 6th and going however fast you're comfortable with. Never had any reliability issues, though I've only been supercharged for 25k miles and the truck has 240k on it now.

 

Well that's great news....just gotta save up now as I tow a 6500 trailer 8 to 10 trips each year. I will retire next year and am planning a Alaska trip soon after so would like a little more power for higher elevations. What system are you using and how is it tuned?

 

I have a magnuson with the URD pulley to help make up for some of the decreased boost at elevation. Originally I had the TRD tune and now have the OVTune. I got my supercharger used so never used the tune that comes with the new kit from magnuson, which is why I used the tune from Toyota originally.

 

So did you use a base tune from Matt and do extra data runs to get it where you need to be or just a canned tune of sorts? I feel like mine needs to firm up shifts seems like it goes 1..2 pretty good then jumps to 3 then 4,5..6. I'm on 4.88 and run 295/18

 

Have the TRD Super Charger...added it to my 2014 at 6700 miles...have a 6K lbs boat I tow...towed kit from VA to IA no sweat...only problem I have had on the entire truck is the belt tensioner got weak and the belt started squealing at 60K.

Other than regular maintenance its been solid. My OEM brakes lasted til 75K miles...unheard of on a truck.

 

Mine is essentially a base tune from Matt. I could send him data logs and he could tweak it, but honestly that always seemed like a lot of effort. I did recently get his tuning software though, so if I ever stop traveling for work I plan to properly dial the tune in. I think it's a lot better than the TRD and stock tune though. I've had his tune for about 18 months now.

 

So it seems that if you don't go crazy with boost and keep up on maintenance and don't run it at WOT it can be a solid platform. I am looking at the harrop but am still doing research, anybody with a supercharger want to add....looking for real world experiences.

 

I'm about in the same boat you are, i will be tuning with the software just after January 20th. The latest tune i received from Matt shifts excellent compared to the base tune i received. Might have to check into finding/tuning with a Dyno in the Twin Cities and a AFR guage.

ZPMan..thanks for your install page, that is well over my capabilities , so I see you have changed your tune from Bully dog to OVTune. Matt able to get you better results or did you have issues with the Bully Dog? How has it been running and do you have 4.88 in it now as that is what I run on 295/18's. I have a 19 with only 7k miles so need it to pull a camper but also need it to last 20 years.....

 

Would anybody that has a Harrop installed give me what they have experienced with the install and tuning of their truck. I am looking at the Harrop with OVTUNE just need to get up with Matt and see what he can do. I think the time has come that as a group we should try to do a GROUP BUY for Superchargers now that we have several choices (Magnuson,Harrop,Wipple..PRO Charger)Who would be up for it ? What manufacturer do we try to approach for a Group Buy ? Guess I can call each one to see if they might be receptive to that idea...you never know. What do you all think.

 

You may want to wait on a group buy. If the TVS 3100 is released for the Tundra via Harrop and Magnuson their 2650 and 1900 may drop in price.

According to Harrop, the Stage 1 application requires no tune for 2019s+; Stage 2 requires a tune.

 

One major benefit of the OVtune is the shifting, BD was really bad and i believe the air/fuel was a little lean on the top. I am running the 4.88s with 35s but 5.29s would be nice if i ever went to 37+ tires. Without the gears it would be stubborn to get back in to overdrive after a small incline.

Was thinking about the Group buy for the Harrop....I think they might be a little hungry now that they have a US operation. It would be nice to see just how many would be interested in a Supercharger if we can get the price down to where Harrop and Magnuson even Wipple are priced similarly. If Harrop does release the 3100 it would possibly lower the smaller units.

 

Is it ever too late to supercharge with a Harrop SC? Asking cause I won't get the funds til probably next year.

 

Why would it be too late? They are partnered with Eaton to release a TVS 3100, hopefully it comes to the Tundra.

 

Sorry let me rephrase myself. Is having too much miles on my Tundra be a strain or dangerous to run a Harrop SC? I'm at 48k in mileage but when I'll be able to, I'll probably be at 70k or 80k at time of install.

 

I installed mine at 75K, I had no second thoughts about it...nor regrets. When internal combustions engines are illegal, then it's too late.

 

OV tune worth it?

 

It's even worth it for the transmission refinements that he makes.

 

There's someone on here that didn't supercharge till well over 200 thousand miles and he tows regularly so I think you're going to be ok.

54k on mine when it was done last February and I had similar concerns. 11k miles and a year later no concerns at all. You'll be fine.

 

I think so. I wouldn't even call my tune perfect, but the shift control alone is why I got it and makes it worthwhile. I have his full tuning suite now, and haven't had a chance to tweak the tune but I intend to get the most of it soon and really dial it in, but I'm more than happy with it right now.


I still stand by supercharging the truck. I've been flying around for work almost non stop the last 8 weeks so sent my supercharger/injectors off to get cleaned up (I bought it used and it was making some noise after the 25k+ miles I've had on it) plus burned up my trans from being a moron on the beaches in Baja during thanksgiving. I get the truck back tomorrow with essentially a new supercharger, new injectors, and a brand new built transmission and will be instantly towing 5000lbs to California to go to a desert race. The transmission was 100% self induced (was too lazy to air down since I had enough power to push through the sand, but WOT for a long time without checking my OBD2 gauges was a dumb idea), so I'm at 240k+ with otherwise no issues from the boosted life. If I bought a truck at 250k or brand new I'd supercharge it as fast as funds allow honestly

I have an Innov8 wideband afr/boost gauge and then supplement that with TorquePro, which my wideband and torquepro match up identically within the stock afr range. I just used a cheap $20 Amazon bluetooth OBD2 adapter and my phone. I haven't even peaked at the tuning suite, so can't help there.

 

Where'd you mount your gauge @snivilous? I've been eyeing that same gauge and wondering where I'd mount the thing...

 

I've been contemplating a SC for quite awhile. I have a '16 that's paid off, we'll taken care of and I've had the truck for 4 years and put 16k miles on it with 64k total miles. I'm keep joking with my wife telling her I'm going to bring it in for service and just have them install a SC while its there.

I used to have a BMW 135i, twin turbo with a stage 3 tune pushing 500whp. I traded it in for my truck when we had kids. I miss the joy of hearing those turbos and feeling the boost while driving. I love my truck now but I feel getting a SC will give me that pure joy of driving. After reading this entire thread, I'm calling Toyota tomorrow to get a quote and set up an install.
