Here's an article that kind of touches on the differences. https://www.theglobeandmail.com/glo...t-have-to-be-used-for-towing/article23686902/ I just kinda skimmed, but here's a bit that really popped out.

Lol...my wife has an Odyssey. The fact that the Ridgeline looks like Honda did that to an Odyssey is why I don’t have a Ridgeline. Practically it’s probably a better vehicle for my needs :crapstorm:....but I just couldn’t..

The Ridgeline would be 99% sufficient for my needs also. But I work for a construction company; everyone drives a truck, many of them heavy duties - not because they need them, but just because of the image. I can just imagine the ridicule I would get if I arrive here in a Ridgeline! LOL. (They made fun of my little Tacoma before I go the Tundra)

I agree for the most part but, on the other hand, even the ultra-light travel trailers are bigger and heavier than they ever used to be.

And those guys toodle along at 20 mph below the speed limit on the highway. Is that really safe?

Yes, for some reason they do not get as much press exposure as Rivian but they are actually closer to actual production than anyone else (Rivian, Tesla, etc.)
    Not bad looking either.

I was somewhat joking with my original response. In all seriousness I would much rather have the tow vehicle far exceeded the capacity needed for the trailer. Just because there are VW Golf’s in the world that tow trailers doesn’t mean they are within payload and towing specs. Many people don’t take into account all the the weight added to their trailer and vehicle when fully loaded. This puts them and the other people on the road in danger. The Tacoma and single axle trailer picture you included appears to be a very well matched combo.

Big Daddy Government 'ratings' are why you don't see many VW Golfs towing 20' caravans in the US. Legal rated capacities are always lower than actual capability, and those set the limits legally, for insurance, etc.

I don’t think any of the “Big Daddy Government Ratings” for towing are overdone. If someone was running a “full capacity” setup then it got hit with a massive side wind, what do you think would happen? The buffers in rating need to account for wind, emergency braking, large inclines, etc that can and will happen at some point.

They attempt to account for the fact that your average joe has done no research and isn't taking the tow as seriously as they should either. i.e. it attempts to compensate for the rampant stupidity.

This. I mean, you bet it'd be nice to be able to tow more, and you bet I'd like to see increased tow ratings for the upcoming 2022 Tundra...but by the same token, tow ratings are kinda like the Field of Dreams. If you raise it, people will come...and want to exceed it. I constantly talk to people who drive at or over the tow rating for their vehicle....and while I understand why they do it (for the reason above), by the same token, limits are there for a reason, as you point out above.

Additionally, while I understand if people don't like where the tow rating is....I really don't understand people who buy a vehicle TO tow, and then complain because the tow rating is lower than they thought it'd be.:confused: That's not at all the fault of Toyota. For example, I primarily bought my truck to haul stuff around, to pull our 14' flatbed, and *occasionally* tow a camper. It'll easily do that. If I were going to pull a camper all year long (or even a hell of a lot more frequently than I currently do), I likely would either have adjusted WHAT I pull, or would have purchased a different truck.

    Yes, this, 100%.

Look at towing ratings for the Golf in the UK and other countries and compare to the US.

Yes, the US is more strict but it doesn’t necessarily mean it is overdone. Not sure how much experience you have with towing. I have towed at the rated limits before. Everything is great until that massive side wind comes though and tries to push you off the road. No chance I would take my family in that Golf/trailer combo in your picture in a cross country trip. I’ll bet there would be at least one near death experience and a lot of white knuckle driving along the way. I’m not interested in a bunch of other people on the road with that setup either, an accident waiting to happen.

Just to tie this back to the 2022 Tundra thread, we would all like to see around 2k of payload!!!

2k would only tie them with GM and still put them behind some Fords (or so I've been told). Why not aim for 4k?! :benchpress:

Our 2016 Tundra is a Great tow vehicle.

Tow a 4950 pound travel trailer all over the lower 48 with the Tundra. Highest miles per day towed so far is a little over 700 miles. Really like having a 38 gallon tank, too.

    2022 Tundra wish list:

Higher advertised payload, better fuel economy, and no weight distribution hitch requirement until reaching at least 7500 pounds.

Yeah, 2k payload is probably the minimum to be competitive at this point. 2,500 would be amazing and doubling the current rating. If Toyota did something HD enough to handle 4k why don’t we just add a diesel to it also?

These two things are kind of in opposition of each other. The closer to your tow vehicles weigh the trailer gets the more likely the need for a WDH. So if you want the WDH need to be 7500 lbs you are asking for something like an 8000 lb truck. That's going to make a higher payload really unlikely without getting into commercial grade trucks.

Agree, I would like to see a Tundra with higher payload with higher gross weight for towing. That's just me, don't know what the majority of Tundra owners want & need.

Believe folks call the Titan a 5/8 ton truck.

Have a friend with a 2020 GMC 1500 1/2 ton and they don't require a WDH hitch until trailer weight reaches 7500 pounds. Not sure what power-plant and tow package he has.

First Toyota pickup we had was the 1987 "Pickup" with 2.4L engine. After owning that truck, we really like Toyota pickups. Don't want to move to another brand, just hoping Toyota would at least increase the Tundra's payload, the other things I mentioned are a wish list.

My point is that it isn't a realistic want out of a pickup truck. Look here at a 3500 GMC diesel weight.

    upload_2021-2-2_13-25-49.jpg

You would need a WDH way before 7500 lbs. If you want to avoid a WDH and have high payload, look into goosenecks or 5th wheels. Anything on your bumper that weighs more than 5000 lbs you are likely going to want a WDH for, no matter what pickup truck you are in.

What's the downside to using a WDH hitch? Why are you so averse to it?

Sometimes when camping on the road we camp at 5 different campgrounds 5 nights in a row. The Anderson WDH hitch is what works on our camper, but I normally disconnect every night and reconnect every morning. Just don't want the hassle.
